100 Terabytes on a single DVD-size optical disc

Sounds like this is holographic optical storage. The only drawback is that the player is damned expensive, and so it is likely to be used only in high end computer storage solutions rather than in consumer products for quite a while.

great, more storage for porn :D

hehe thought that too. You already got the real life one from the SOS brigade clubroom? ;)

Probably. But wouldnt it be possible to build a downgraded version for home users? I mean nobody needs 100 terrabyte in storage but even 1tb would already be great especially if you can just buy another disk if you need more.

hm... nice technical achievement, but until several of the major manufacturers picks this up....

Well, you can always use better error correction codes. Generally, higher density with better error correction codes can normally give you roughly the same error rate while having more data capacity. For example, DVD is more dense than CD but it's roughly the same "scratch proof" as CD.

Considering the storage capacity of that monster I'd hope they'd use a plastic casing similar to those used on Magneto Optical disks.

Everytime a new large format disc comes out I keep hoping and praying for this, but each time they keep releasing naked disks that are prone to scratching, smudging, dust, and increased wear and tear.

Especially when it comes to home video use. I'd love a next gen storage medium that used a hard plastic casing with a metal door over the read area. I'd feel much safer letting my nephews and nieces handle the things. Rather than having to put in all the movies for them as I do now with DVDs.

Hell if Blue-Ray or HD-DVD had used a protective shell for their disc's I'd have bought one in a heartbeat even with the limited selection of movies.

And yes, I realize it'd add a dollar or two onto the price and that they would take up more shelf space. However, it'd be soooo worth it to me for the peace of mind, knowing that they would be "relatively" difficult to trash compared to current DVD, Blue-Ray and HD-DVD. One of the reasons I still use MO disks for my family photo backups.

Do you really have a constant problem with DVD/CD media constantly getting trashed? I can only ever recall losing one disc and that was to my ps2 with drive engaged so no casing would have saved it.

Same, I've never lost a disc to scratches myself. I've seen people who have but when you look at the disc you know why (hint: They don't know what "take care of" means at all).
