Geforce 6800 vanilla vs the new low to mid range 8000 series cards.

Anyone know how my old 6800 "vanilla" would fair compared to the low and medium range geforce 8 cards?

That would be a cool review.

Thanks,

Since a 6800 vanilla was on average slightly slower than a 7600GT, I would guess it would be even more slower than say a 8600 such card. Not so sure about the lowest end models such as a 8400/8300 or whatever they decide on, however.

im sure there will be plenty of benchmarks showing how the 7600gt compares

as a refence a 6800gt is about 10% slower than the 7600gt so its just a case of finding out how a 6800 compares to a 6800gt and work it out from there

i think they would be very much comparable.

it is amazing how high-end gfx cards become low-end in just a short time.

As far as I remember, vanilla 6800 was in the same league as 6600GT (about the half of the standard 7600GT performance). Thus, I would expect it to be 2 to 4 times slower than 8600 GTS, depending on the scenario.

I agree. Any flavor of 8600 is going to be substantially faster than a 6800 vanilla. An 8500GT would probably be hurt by its memory bandwidth though, and 8400/8300's are only available to OEMs IIRC.

If you're interested in midrange cards, I'd wait for the HD 2600/2400 offerings and see how they compare. The 8600 series has dropped a bit in price, but the performance is still underwhelming compared to how the 6600 and 7600's matched up to their peers.

I have a 6800 vanilla @ 512mb VRAM in one machine and an 8800 GTS @ 640mb in my other machine. They are uncomparable in the sense that the 6800 is passable but the 8800 is just, simply, fast

But then again, I'm a developer and I derive enjoyment from torturing GPU's :devilish:

Cheers,
Jack

That's correct, they traded blows depending on the game.
You're confusing the 'vanilla' 6800 with the 6800LE. Due to its lower texture fillrate and vertex througput, the LE often fell short of a 6600GT in less than bandwidth limited situations. The standard 6800 had almost twice the pixel/AA/Z fill rate, 30% more bandwidth, and the 4 extra pipes plus an extra vertex shader (over the LE) made up for the deficiencies of its neutered brother compared to the 6600GT.

The speed of a 6600GT vs. 'vanilla' 6800 ranged from 'almost as fast' to '60% as fast' depending on the situation.
