Is Sony slowly pulling the plug on future Cell developement

A report from infoworld says that Sony is about to cut back spending R&D money on the cell project as part of their latest savings programme. Developement of a future 45nm version of the BE for future PS3s is supposedly being outsourced to an external contractor.

Why, if the Cell MA was still seen as a central strategic asset at Sony's HQ, they probably wouldn't think about outsourcing the developement of a 45nm version. Though I agree the article is rather imprecise as they specificly talk about cutting back R&D costs in the first paragraph, while the later paragraph might imply that they only seek to outsource manufacturing.

Yeah, but now your title seems to suggest that Sony is planning to abandon the Cell Processor altogether. Whereas we are talking here very specifically about one aspect of hardware, being the move to 45nm, where they state that they notice that this time the market offers an alternative to in-house R&D.
