What can we look forward to when Gran Turismo 5 releases on PlayStation 3?
Gran Turismo 5 will offer gamers an experience more rich, more in-depth and more exciting than they might expect - even from a series as closely identified with innovation and invention as Gran Turismo. Not only will Gran Turismo 5 deliver an even more comprehensive set of cars and courses than gamers saw with previous iterations, it will also feature new game-enhacing graphical effects such as damage, night racing and weather.

These innovations are twinned with the option to join millions of like-minded individuals globally within the Gran Turismo community and to find a driving experience to suit, whether that is taking on the Top Gear test track, chucking cars around stunt arenas, go-karting, creating and sharing your own track or intense head-to-head races. Who, where and what to drive is completely down to the individual.

This time around Gran Turismo is likely not just to be the definitive driving experience but a definitive gaming experience full stop.

Wow, need to see for real to believe !

If true, they really should have added traffic violation driving test to the mix. :p

BTW anyone knows: Is GT 5:p split screen runs in 60 fps per player? If yes they could not drop framerates for 3D.

"Because Gran Turismo 5 is built to run at 60 frames per second," he added, "it was easy for us to implement 3D. It's quite difficult to convert a game that runs at 30 frames per second to 3D.”

:rolleyes: tell me where is the part in this quote where they say that they have dropped the framerate to 30fps please.
Even if GT5's 3D is 1080p/60fps, it can't be seen on TV via the PS3. The S3D standard stops at 720p/60fps for games. Even movies top out at 1080p/24fps. At 1080p/60fps, GT5 would be ready for the PS4 (forward compatibility). :)

Maybe becouse 60/2 is 30fps* and thus smooth but 30/2 is "15fps* which is far from smooth?

*Perfomance impact might not be twice for 3D but if game runs 30fps in 2D in will run worse in 3D with same visuals. Thus a visual vs perfomance bar set at 30fps would not cut it without optimisations which would mainly mean downgrades in tech used.

@Lucid_Dreamer
It could be 1280x1080p@60 in 3D, just like GT 5:p. We have to count bandwidth cost ;]
It still doesn't matter, when it comes to S3D. 720p/60fps is the S3D ceiling for gaming video output, according to Sony's presentation. Unless they change that, it doesn't matter if GT5 can render anything above 720p/60fps in S3D. It just won't be displayed as anything but 720p/60fps or lower. For 1080p/60fps S3D, HDMI might be the bottleneck on this one.

There is not a cat in hell's chance of 1080p in 3D at 60fps, however, hopefully the optimisations to give 720p in 3D @ 60fps will allow them to do Full 1080p HD in 2D @ 60fps.

Is there a confirmed list of features for GT5 somewhere ? The feature list I "gather" from multiple places look ridiculous (car stunt, karting, editor, weather, day/night, smoke trail, blah). They are gleaned from interviews. People can misspoke when they talk fast. Am looking for an official write up.

So you are saying that as the sun moves, these rather large environmental shadows of the buildings and the trees are going to change orientation, lengthen and shorten, etc.?

or is it a smoke and mirrors effect? I'm simply asking how dynamic this lighting is.

Ack! I mean, it's very nice and all, but why are they adding lens flare when it's supposed to be a driver's view?! Eye candy gone mad.

Also, I think they do it because driving in the real world in such conditions can be quite blinding, to the point where you can see very little, yet on a screen you'd never get any sensation of that going on?

You can see that shadows leghten and shorten on posted by me gameplays, but dunno about change orientation, its hard too tell from replays and gameplays, but on the official GT 5 US site they wrote:

In below interview they said - Night, day, shadows, sunset, sunrise all simulated

BTW in the trailer we can notice, that even clouds moving and cast shadows.

And Polyphony is known from not taking shortcuts in developing features.

BTW Weather is almost confirmed and probably its dynamic too.

It's not wise to assume too much. All features are probably not going to be available on all tracks. It's been that way before. The rally track is currently the only one we've seen with day/night.

Car shadows change length depeding on sun height but scenery dont seem to. The scenery shadows looks like fake shadow textures with offset prepared in direction to sun (dont stretch), sun that just moves down and not side ways which would break illusion. Though didn't notice shadow cloud simulation but it wouldn't be anything unexpected. Since clouds are part of skybox texture they just do something like in for example C&C3 to simulate cloud shadows on terrain with a layer.

There is tons of prebaking going on in GT5. From scenery shadows to lighting etc. Though is not like other games dont do similar stuff to up framerate.
