Seeking Reviews of PS3 as a BRD Movie Player

Nothing respectable so far. Some personal opinions and some gaming site reviews but nothing yet from industry specialist. As soon I run across them on avsforum, I'll post them here. I expect it to be a fairly good (mid range) player, personally.

Personally, anything that makes me stop watching DVDs on my HDTV (=painful) is going to be great. PS3 might be the crappiest Bluray player out there (which it isn't), but it will still be so much better on my HDTV than DVD that i really wouldn't care. Heck i'm buying a 360 HDDVD player to use with my PC!

I don't find WS DVDs painful. Tho noticeably not as sharp as 1080i. Now Full Screen (4:3) pan and scan. . . <where's my barf smiley?> Happily, we've been buying only WS DVDs for years now. . .

Some SD DVD's such as Gladiator upscaled on the Toshiba HD DVD player look very nice and would easily satisfy/fool majority of the population.

I enjoy HD DVD greatly but I can understand HD DVD and BR being a tough sell to the masses.

ESPH HD (sportscenter and such) and Discovery HD using Video actually much better than most Film HD. Try convincing people of the difference :)

Discovery HD is such a treat. This is maybe the only reason that I get and HD-DVD drive for my XB360.

Ahhhh, hadn't considered that using the controller as the movie player remote would mean a wired remote for your movie player if you buy the low-end sku --even tho they've added HDMI to make that more attractive. But a wired remote would be a deal breaker for me for a movie player. . .

. . .edit: Doh, read a little further.
Sony says a dedicated remote control will be available in December for $25

There is no wired controller for PS3. Regardless of SKU.

The controls on the controller in the BR player work pretty well (pressing select brings up info about bitrate and other stuff -- kind of neat, actually).

From the few movies I've watched on it (kingdom of heaven, kiss kiss bang bang, and part of lord of war), PS3's BR player looks pretty fantastic (and no noise!) -- add me to the list of positive random consumer reviews. Definitely not a repeat of the PS2 dvd player situation. Anyone buying a PS3 as a BR player should be happy (not only is it cheaper, but it seems to be top-of-the-line).

I agree, the main point here is that PS3 is a better Bluray player than PS2 was a DVD player, and i used PS2 as a DVD player for a while before buying a real one. I really don't expect to buy a Bluray player for years, and PS3 will be more than enough.
