Gears of War 12min Xboxyde

another reason i like games with fully unified lighting and shadows nowadays such as "Lair, alan wake". u simply get the sense of feel more right, at least "subconcisouly. awful spelling"

Umm, no...no...again, no. Unified lighting as it is achieveable currently is not a good idea. There`s no way of achieving the same level of quality achieveable with precomputing stuff. Not yet, and not in the near future. 3D is about hacking everything to hell, working with particular cases and having the best solution for each...a general solution is always never as good(it`s a simplified view, but i feel it sums up an uninteresting rant that i had in mind about this:))

I have a question for any dev that might be reading this thread. The rain portion of the commercial with rain running down the buildings, wasn't something like this shown in the Toy Store demo? How do you think they did it? Is it an example of putting dynamic branching to good use and if so what effects other than water would it be good for?

Search 'rain' here:

It's a very elaborate system, I'm amazed ATI spent that much time in researching rain... There are lots of effects overlaid, splattering of raindrops, flow of drops down glass planes, haloes around street lamps, streaks...

I doubt we'll see anything like that soon in a game.

Yeah. That demo looks amazing though.

I remember Epic (Mark/Cliff?) talking about their rain shaders too by the way. Maybe I can find something...

The other thing I really like in this commercial is the part where he's running past the windows (you see him from the inside). Very nice IMHO.

It's almost more of an UE3 commercial. ;)

I remember the Rainy Night Forest level of Gear of War, the most awesome ever in my opinion.. the rain falls in the wall, on everything in a very realistic look

You can also view the old UE3 demo from 2004/2005 - look at the lighting that is achieved there. I'm still amazed this demo from ages ago ;) (2 Years is AGES?, wow how time flies)

The Engine is very capable of doing very realistic lighting and shadows. It just depends on what methods they implemented... and none of us knows what it will look like when the game is actually released. (2 weeks to go!)

I wonder if that fourth video is from GOW, I heard there was going to be a vehicle level later in the game and a lot of the other stuff shown from the UE3 demo was of GOW.

So....I just saw the new GOW trailer on television just now.

And WOW!

2 Things:

- It looked great on teh TV and is worthy of the goosebumpian type feeling that vid game trailers can give you sometimes.

-It looks NO WHERE as good as the same one online in HD. We are in for a friggin treat. I can not wait to get this game in my hands, and see it in all its 720p glory. We have been seeing/hearing about this game for so long, and this hype is finally about to become reality.

I can't believe it. I haven't been this excited about a game since maybe GTA III, or Undying (I am a HUGE HUGE real HUGE Barker fan.)

Can't wait for emergence day.

haunted house
I really need to stop watching all these videos I feel like I'm spoiling the game...
it's only the multiplayer...

I'm only worried about the Hamer of Dawn (satellite laser) might be cheap but it looks like it takes a long time to target an area so it probably won't be something you use without good, cooperating team mates.

Wow, that does look insane. I like the delay, which seems balanced. Kind of a sitting duck, thus you need a couple teammates to cover you... also prone to being sniped. Looks like Epics MP polish rubbed off on GOW.

Btw, aliasing seems minimal which is nice. Thanks a lot to the lost constrast palette for sure. This game is super gory though, which I think is right up the alley of young men. Digging the water effects.
