Google Buying YouTube

That's quite interesting. What's Google's share of the online video market? I hope this helps my google stock.

It's been rumoured for a long time so I'm not surprised. Whilst this is probably good news for end-users (as YouTube can benefit from Google's bandwidth and search technology and, presumably, merge content with Google Video) I can't really see how YouTube can be worth $1.65 billion. It seems ridiculous for a site that, according to The Economist, is loosing $500,000 a month! No amount of advertising sales is ever going to cover that and I also wouldn't be surprised if there are some very high-profile copyright cases brought against YouTube soon, given the amount of basically pirated material up there. So, yeah, well done - they bought a license to loose money that could well just be a passing fad (as, let's face it, 99.99999% of material on YouTube is absolute drivel).

YouTube, and now Google, have recently picked up some major agreements with various companies in order to publish and stream their content, that will go a long way to prevent possible copyright issues. Also, there has been mentioned, and I'd reason to put a little bit behind it, that if a major company tried to go balls to the walls with the copyright issues that the company would face huge pop culture backlash.

While I agree much of the stuff on YouTube is really crappy, I still find it to be a decent time waster and many times there are a few jems on YouTube that make it worth going through the crap.

Google stated already in that news article that they had no plans on merging google existing video venture with YouTube, and I'm happy to here that, Google Video is crap compared to YouTube. If Google can manage to intergrate its amazing search technology and server power with YouTube then I can see some awesome profit coming from it.

This is a questionable decision for Google. To avoid being sued into oblivion, they will have to remove all copyrighted content. Many users of the service will then be forced to go to another youtube style startup.

YouTube's real protection from copyright lawsuits suits was the fact that they had no money.

I am still worried about youtube, i really want it to remain as it is now, since google video sucks compared to it. Also, even though google has a whole lot more bandwitch, from some strange reason youtube videos seem to load really faster (in my pc) while videos from the google service take forever to do so.

I actually prefer Google's version, since their player scales according to the size of the browser window, while youtube videos are perpetually pretty much stamp-sized.

Its flash video, the quality is freaking craptastic, it if were above the size of a stamp it'd look horrid. I'm for one glad YouTube keeps it so small, any larger than maybe 1.25x would distort it to all hell.

Wow.

I guess google video didn't took off as they expected it too...

so the easiest thing to do is buy the site that did...

but isn't google losing money at the moment?

btw, doesn't divx have their own video uploading thing now?

stage6 or something?

it's a lot clearer than youtube.

but not as much content yet...

i've seen some anime being uploaded there.

According to the BBC report this morning, they (can't recall if that was youtube or google) had signed up major video producers so that may not be an issue.

Surely, that's never stopped companies before from suing.

Err, click on the fullscreen symbol on the bottom right and they open in a full browser window :)

Am i the only one who has the feeling that Google is in reality a very VERY EVIL orginisation? Like, Wolram&Hart evil...

Don't know, i just feel that behind all the "free-ness" and "goodness" they try to perceive, there is pure evil. Even more evil than MS. At least MS takes your money and get on with it...

google never takes money from us.

I don't think they're evil, however they do seem to be going down the same road as Microsoft. They develop one ubiquitous application and then, in an attempt to stay cutting edge, try and expand into loads of different areas too fast. When they realise they've spread themselves too thin and that small specialist applications will always be more cutting-edge and relevant than large monolithic organisations they simply buy up the small developers and assimilate them into the mass.

...loosing ... loose ...

More often then not people write loose in place of lose. It's just weird that people would make an error like that so systematically.

Loose is when something is not properly attached, e.g. the door knob is hanging loose or the tiger is on the loose.

Though, loosing weight brings a funny mental image.
