PS2 outselling XBox 360

Blu Ray should win in theory. It's larger.

I think now though the launch stumbles have to make one once again question whether Sony can execute. Things like extremely expensive players, delays, and dual layer discs not being available.

Still, it's Blu-Ray's to lose imo.

btw, if we keep this thread up long enough, another ten days or so, we'll get June NPD's and we can probably change the title back to "Xbox360 outselling PS2"

HD-dvd with the porn industry and lower productions costs for pressing, BR with Sony owned studios that will never let go of it.
I don't know a porn production company that picked up HD DVD.

How many HD DVD players have been sold till now? 1000 per month? How about the software sales? I don't see how it affects the situation in the long run.

Do you expect any big title for Xbox 360 in June? August will be more interesting with Madden for each platform.

Unfortunately such headline will do X360 not much good as it is expected to perform better than a console of last-gen.

The PS2 out selling a next-gen console is a testimony to the strength and value of great content. That is having a game library for a range of audiences. In my view this is what Sony has done for the last two generations to stay on top.

Not really, but it did win April and was only 11,000 short of PS2 in May. It wouldn't surprise me lets say.

When did PS2 drop to $129? Perhaps that is the reason for the recent surge, which if anything I'd have then expected to be bigger.

Last gen consoles always outsell new ones at the beginning.

Contrast this with ps2's launch library and realisticaly ps2 should not have sold anywhere near the numbers they did early on. One word - Marketing.

Marketingt can't do achieve such results alone. Its the feature included in the PS2 which allowed it to sell as well as it did in the early stages. That is the ability to play DVD and to a much lesser extent play PS1 games better (faster loadtime).

The latter was a factor for me at least. I could not stand the loadtime for the PS1 and such never own one.

Funny how you think it's such an important issue with console sales, but as soon as I use the exact same logic with Bluray you suddenly have excuses why your own logic no longer applies.
Did I say it only went one way? I was pointing out one example where a brand stronghold can fall down. even tying in with console software being important. I wasn't predicting the outcome of the whole next-gen movie scenario, nor was I asked to.

[CHAPPEL] WHATTT! [/CHAPPEL]

In Japan I have heard this had an effect. In Europe I don't know. But in the U.S., DVD players were readily available for equal to or less than the cost of playstation2. I hardly think this is the reason people were clamoring for ps2 early. The thing was marketed as the greatest thing since sliced bread and that's the reason it was successful early when it had no reason to be. Basically:

"This thing is great it will do xyz missle launches and oh boy Matrix wow!
oh btw - it'll also play your dvd's and ps1 games."

Are we at the point now where 360s are sitting on shelves and theres no limited supply or are these numbers for the US still considered supply constrained?

I think we're way past that point. At least here in Canada. No real shortage.

There's a huge shortage of DS Lites here in Ottawa. Zellers is the only retail outlet that sells them only because people forget that they sell consoles.

Best Buy, Future Shop and EB games here all sold out and they don't know when the next shipment will come in.

Though a big thumbs up to the DS Lite. I just bought one last week and it's beautiful. Plays games nicely too. Too bad I have to defend soon... :(

So the $400 Premium pack seems to be too expensive... but why are people not buying the $300 Core? I think the lack of AAA games must also be at play here. What's the next big thing for X360 and when is it coming out? I'm sure that there's something before Gears of War to wait for... or not?

I think MS is riding Gears of War, Forza 2, and Viva Pinata as their big titles. None of these seem to have hard release dates yet. They may also rely on an assist by 3rd party software like Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Madden and so forth, but their big three internal titles seem to be the main system moving titles. The summer title (Table Tennis, Prey, Battle for Middle Earth 2) and the back library don't seem to be pushing large demand right now.

But then again it is the summer and availability seems to vary by area. My area has them now on a regular basis but they are selling well.

I think MS's fall will largely depend not only on how well Gears of War fares (which seems almost everyone with a 360 is interested in) but also how well they are able to get people excited about forthcoming titles like Bioshock and Mass Effect. And maybe the big wild card will be Sony. If Sony hits the availability they have promised and provides software that justifies the extra expense MS could feel some cruch. And then there is price...

the xb360 has recently had a price cut here in nz (its not selling well) surprising since nz + austrailia was one of the xbox1 best performing markets globally, xb360 had a good launch but the momentum has gone out over the last few months, worring signs for ms esp with november rapidly approaching

A lot of good titles are fixing to hit.

NCAA Football 2007 - July 17
Dead Rising - Aug 8
Madden NFL 07 - Aug 20
Saints Row - Aug 27
Enchanted Arms(rpg) - Aug 29
Test Drive Unlimited - Sep 10
Just Cause - Sep 17
NBA Live 07 - Sep 24
Splinter Cell: Double Agent - Sep 24
Gears of War - Oct (tentative)

http://www.gamespot.com/newthisweek...is_week&platform=1029&sort=rdate&dlx_type=all

Some of those I don't typically care for, specifically the sports titles, but all will sell well to the general public. Sports titles are normally some of the best-sellers for a system and all sports titles on the 360 will be a big graphical leap from their counterparts.

Dead Rising could be a system-seller. That game looks incredible, and fans from the Resident Evil genre who love bashing zombies' heads in will find it appealing.

There's never been a better time to own a 360.

The Premium 360 is just the $300 core with about $150 worth of accessories. If you bought the core, then bought a wirelless controller, headset for use on Live, and then bought a memory card you would have spent as much or more as a Premium, and would end up with less.

It may seem expensive, but once you break down what it actually is it's a much better deal than the Core is.

Madden will become a hit in the US, I'm sure about that.
Test Drive has potential... just as Dead Rising, although its graphics are mediocre IMHO.
The only other interesting title is Splinter Cell in my opinion - even though it's multiplatform, the lack of PS3s will help X360 sales. The rest aren't really exeptional games, at least I couldn't care about them at all. But it will take GOW to speed up sales, I guess.

So for me, it's still waiting for the first hw revision and GOW to make a purchase...

Only if you think paying $100 for a 20 GB hard drive is reasonable.

Oh, is that all you get in the Premium?

Funny, I could have sworn it came with a wireless controller instead of wired, a headset, a hard drive, media remote and even a Cat5 cable.

At least that was all in the box of the one I bought.

So you think $100 for a 20gb hdd, $10 upgrade on the controller, $25 remote, $25 headset are reasonable prices to charge? (which is actually what he meant IMHO)...

you're saying 'it's a much better deal' because you're getting '$160 worth for $100' when in fact it's the correct price as those parts are probably only WORTH $100.

So the core is (frankly) a rip off (as are most of the RRP prices stated above), FTR I think the Premium is the correct product at the correct price, and MS should NEVER have considered 2 skus (tho by all acounts hdd shortages/MS desire to launch first dictated there was no option)
