X1600Pro vs a 9800XT?

or for that matter a 6600GT or a X800GTO?

my 9800XT died so i am in need of a new videocard...

thanks buddies :D

MSI 1600XT. The price has dropped through the floor in the past months, perhaps in anticipation of a successor chip, the cooler is reasonably quiet, and it is a very decent upgrade coming from a 9800XT IMO.

The only "problem" with the card is that it's a dual-DVI deal, so if you're like me and wish to drive a CRT, you'll need to use the adapter.

So I'm recommending you this, however, I'm pretty skeptical wrt other x1600XT cards. The reference cooler is much too loud, and that's what you'll get from most of the board manufacturers.

X800GTO isn't a bad idea either, in particular it has more texturing brunt (which you can invest in more AF) and more bandwidth (... AA). It's just that going forward, with ever increasing shader usage, I think the X1600XT is the better investment.

I went from a 9800 to an X800GTO(temporarily) and was disapointed in the performance delta. I would recommend stepping up to something higher for great justice.

zeckensack, I suspect the OP isn't interested in going to PCI-E for the time being.

AFAIK, there are no AGP 1600XTs.

b0bd0le, you should consider a 7800 GS or something.

I'm going to stick with my aging AGP platform until Vista and DX10, so I'm also interested in the X1600Pro (I don't want to spend much). Any advice?

I saw some Sapphire cards at newegg for a good price. The 512MB version is only $17 more. It uses GDDR2 instead of GDDR3, but I think they're both clocked the same. Worth it?

Just wondering if there are any pitfalls to avoid like clock speeds, noise, heat, etc.

I've got an X1600 Pro (CrossFire) from Diamond. It's a bit better than the 9800Pro, but you'd better be getting it cheap (<$150 CDN) because it isn't that much better (at least in Doom3/Quake 4). It's just nice in that it supports SM3.0.

edit: The Pro is quite handicapped compared to the XT. (500/390 versus 590/690)

I have Galaxy 6600GE (~110$ for AGP) and it works just fine... also heard that in japan some 7600GS on AGP were spotted for ~ 150$... IMHO both X1600 or 6600 are fine cards and the choice between them is up to personal preferencies (red or green :) )

i'm kinda suprised that no one mentioned a 6600GT... how come? is it too old?

Slower? And I doubt its any cheaper than the X1600 Pro, and getting it with 256MB would probably raise the price a bit more too.

Where?
At 1600x1200 with AA and AF?
Show me game-test where X1600Pro is faster than 6600GT at 1280x1024. Not 3dmark, but any game test where its faster and fps is higher than 15-20 average... They are same class.

Hmm, may be X1600Pro has equal performance as 6600GT, but X1600XT is a very good card, it even beats 6800GT in few games too, and with only four ROP's. Thanks to the faster Core & Memory speeds.

At this point of time, I would try to get minimum of X1600XT.

Wow, I didn't believe this at first, but after checking some benches the 6600GT is faster than I thought. It's often barely behind the 7600GS, which is rather remarkable.

Still, you'll generally have to settle for 128MB to get a 6600GT AGP at a similar price. I'm going for the X1600 for programming purposes, but the 6600GT is definately a good alternative.

You're a bit defensive, but oh well, you're right. There was a reason why I put a ? after I said slower, as in not for certain......

2 X1600Pro in crossfire are indeed faster ... your point?

as for 512MB ram ... no doubt so much memory helps a lot.. I've seen enough people buying (for example) 6200 with 512Mb ram instead of recommended by me X1600 or 6600GE - "hey, it has more RAM, IT IS better card" :cries:

I wasn't trying to disprove you chaavdarrr my link was helping support your assessment. The x1600pro seems to be about 20 dollars cheaper than the 6600gt though just as the 6600gt is 20 dollars cheaper than the x1600xt.

Farcry, with HDR and AA and AAA... OH yeah the 6600Gt cant do that.. DUH. I win.
