Firms set prices to maximize income, not to earn enough to cover the cost of operations. If Sony were set to lose ten trillion or earn ten trillion on the PS3 launch the optimal price for PS2 would be exactly the same, either way.

Yeah in a way you are right. But for some reason I can't help but feel that if Sony didn't lose money on the PS3 right out of the gate, Sony might have lowered the price of the PS2 to $119.

Why wouldn't they drop to 100? Kind of a dumb move imo.

COme on Barnaby don't you think they can drop the price of the PS2 down to $99 this Holiday season with the PS3 coming out at the sametime.

Think about it. If you can't get a PS3 this Christmas don't worry get the newly lowerd $99 PS2.

lowering the price of the previous model will have an effect on both pre and post launch of the new one.

the trick is to get balance right to maximize the profit from both sides. :)

It wouldn't surprise me if MS dropped it severely just to clear old units off the shelves for more 360 space.

Hasn't MS simply stopped producing the Xbox and distributing it in stores?

Xbox 360 is meant for profit, and they need to steal as much thunder as possible from Sony's PS3 launch, and impose their console on the market as fast as possible. That's probably why they're killing the Xbox off...

Well they are actually "killing off" the Xbox simply because they are still losing money making it. Added to the fact what you said about pushing the 360 into people's minds.

At $129 they can bundle an eyetoy with the system for the '06 holiday season without having to lower the price point further. Just a thought.
