what exactly does this mean?

That sounds like a math instruction called a 'dot product' and it could do 9 billion of these per second...

This will be the determining factor for me. If most of the game I wish to play only require Live Silver, I may get an Xbox 2. I do not want to pay for subscriptions to simply play online. I understand MMOG need that subscription but for other games mortal kombat, gotham racing etc..I do not want to pay at all.

Speng.

I wonder how that streaming from windowsXP is done. Sure would be nice if I could keep media files on my server and communicate via samba.

Yeah, wasn't it speculated they might be doing some tweaking for certain operations? Like dot product? Though I honestly don't know how this stands up, I'll presume it's good if MS have it on a spec sheet.

Everything seems pretty much in line with expectations. Glad we can stop talking about PPUs ;)

BlimBlim has confirmed these are true (BlimBlim is the editor of one of the big xbox sites, quite close to MS France..reliable).

Just gonna edit this to make it easier for peeps like me to read...

I'd like to know how the 'Play music from portable devices' is going to work. What interface do they use? Same with the digital camera picture viewing. Reckon it requires the USB ports on front? (if true, of course!)

edit: misplaced the online gaming!

Custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU
- 3 symmetrical cores at 3.2 GHz each
- 2 hardware threads per core
- 1 VMX-128 vector unit per core
- 1 MB L2 cache

No FPU in addition to VMX? If so,

1 core ~ 8 Flops per cycle
3 cores ~ 24 Flops per cycle

@ 3.2 GHz, tri-core ~ 24 * 3.2 GHz ~ 76.8 GFlops

Sorry I havnet been keeping up with the specs as much as I like, so MS went ahead and went for the 512 ram?

:?:

LOL because the poster didn't inlcude a PPU in the specs or LOL because Microsoft didn't include one?

that means (retire) throughput of 1 dot product per cycle per cpu/vmx unit. nice.

I was following this thing this morning also - the actual thread on TeamXBox has been deleted. Now, frankly I feel like that almost ups the credibility, since Cesar of TeamXBox is under NDA and has access to additional info not privy the regular press.

I guess we'll either know soon enough... or we won't. :p

maybe I'm reading the list wrong but you don't get to playgames online with the xboxlive silver package?

the way it looks you only get the features with the "*" by it right if thats the case it's pretty pointless, I guess they are just giving a taste to get you hooked

You can't play regular online games with the silver package, just the special weekends and other silver specials. That's how I get it.

If this spec is true then yes, 512MB is good.

Memory
-512 MB GDDR3 RAM
- 700 MNz DDR

Memory Bandwidth
- 22.4 GB/s memory interface bus bandwidth
- 256 GB/s memory bandwidth to EDRAM
- 21.6 GB/s frontside bus

700 MHz DDR (1400 MHz effective)

22.4 GB/s --> 128 bit bus

I was hoping it would be 256 bit ---> 44.8 GB/s :(

The way I read is, you get to play online on weekends for free with Silver. Monday - Friday you don't get to play online, you need the Gold Package for that.
