I do wonder if the game engine is fully NetherRealm bespoke technology, or has some Unreal 5 DNA in there? I do know MK11 used UE3, but was never stated as NetherRealm tech.

- What type of game is Mortal Kombat 1?
- It's a game, about Mortal Kombat, made by Netherealm, you know, those that have only made Mortal Kombat games.

That's not the answer to that questioooooooooooooooooooooon! 🤬

Next week we should have a better answer or understanding with the PlayStation Showcase.

Well, they also make the Injustice series. Basically MK using DC superheroes. :p

Its actually interesting cause it seems both endings are canon in MK11, as multiverse theory would obviously dictate.

There is a timeline where Liu Kang wins and a timeline where he loses. So the traditional bad guys who survived the end of Mortal Kombat 11 can still exist as part of the new game and the new versions of characters Liu Kang sheparded in his timeline can interact with them. This is basically mortal kombat injustice 1 now, only without DC 😅

Still cant wait for injustice 3 though 😢

Seems like the announcement was one for the MK fans. Would it have killed them to do a gameplay video for those of us who just want to nosey at high production value current gen only games. :)

Did you mean 4?
No they have only used unreal engine 3 since mortal Kombat vs DC...and they have gotten extremely proficient at it 💀

I can only imagine what they could do with ue5

They have only been adding their own tech onto their custom version of ue3 for every game since then. And warner brother spares no expense for them to be able to do that

Did you mean 4?
In this instance, no. But the mobile version does use UE4.

It appears that it has been a confusion lately as to what engine the latest Mortal Kombat game, Mortal Kombat 11, uses. While we knew that the game was based on a custom Unreal Engine 3 version, some people thought that the game would be using Unreal Engine 4. As such, NetherRealm Studios Programming Lead Jon Greenberg has shed some light on what exactly is going on here.
As Greenberg stated, the current-gen version of Mortal Kombat 11 uses NetherRealm’s custom Unreal Engine 3 which appears to be – like pretty much all custom engines – radically different than what Epic Games is currently offering.
On the other hand, the mobile version of Mortal Kombat 11 will be indeed using Unreal Engine 4.

:ROFLMAO:

Thats crazy considering how awesome MK11 looks and how old UE3 is.
Tekken 7 is UE4 and cant event compete
It's also difference of priorities and resources. NR got tons of budget and all their own equipment(motion capture and facial capture studio etc)purchased by WB directly when they proved they could sell millions of copies per release.

The Japanese studios for fighting games in general are given far less by their publishers than that but they have learned to make due. On top of that Tekken in particular was coming off the worst selling game in the franchise by far (tag 2) and so was a relatively budget release even by the standards of the series it was a part of. So was soul calibur 5 and 6 after 4s underperformance. And for calibur I don't think 6 sold enough to save it from purgatory.

Back in the day the amount of effort and resources it took to be top of the line graphically was just much lower in general. So for more niche genres like fighting games they were particularly affected.

You either adapt to make the best of what you can do or you fall behind. Arc system works resolved to be the best at what they are good at(ultra anime fighters), Capcom resolved to bring street fighter back from the budget era with money from other parts of the company. And Tekken 7 was lucky enough to do enough things right to create a big sales success so we get a relatively bigger and much more technically accomplished follow up. Still won't be on the level of what netherealm have access to.

Wish it was 2d. That along with what appears to be a marketing deal means I will wait for a sale on this. It seems to be that any game with marketing deals on a console tends to be pretty buggy on the platforms that don't have the marketing deal
