Rift, Vive, and Virtual Reality

Apple will certainly sell more headsets at double the Cambria's price though.

who knows. I think with vr the experiances are just as important and facebook has at least been creating content for the headsets for awhile now. It may be at a point where apple is the outside brand trying to get in. Who knows if they can or not. Who knows when their headset will even release.

I'm fully expecting this new headset with the full facial tracking to be targetted towards commercial and business clients with a version being made available for gamers. As such I'm thinking it'll be in the 1000+ USD price range. From what I've heard, that's where most of the money is being made in VR.

Pretty impressive stuff though. Would love to be wrong and have it come in at 500 USD or lower.

SB

I certainly think it will be targeted to businesses and then higher end gamers who want the best vr experiance tethered to a pc.

However I think Facebook/Meta is doing great selling Quests to the general public. They moved what 15m quests 1/2 in total or more at this point ?

Does anyone have any idea what kind of software sells to Quest people or how much software they consume in general? I wonder if it's a situation like with the Wii. All humans wanted a Wii cuz it was hip but hardly bought software.

PC VR seems dead unless some big company decides to subsidize a big game again. Even indie games are barely trickling in.

IMO - unless PSVR2 is able to generate massively more interest than PSVR did, VR gaming is likely to settle into being an extremely small niche market. However, these things go in cycles (two other times, starting in the 90's I can think of when VR gaming was being pushed) with this latest VR push being the best thus far. So potentially the next VR push in a few years might be "the one".

I think when VR headsets are basically just slightly larger than eyeglasses or swimming goggles (not masks) is when they'll have a reasonable chance of mass consumer adoption.

But as it currently stands, they're still too cumbersome, bulky and inconvenient to use for most non-VR diehards to use.

I see more potential for VR in professional and commercial use than gaming currently.

IIRC beat saber keeps becoming top sellers on quest. Or the store sorting was not by top sellers and was just hand picked by Facebook team?

As for PCVR, porn.

Every time vr Kanojo went on sale, it always become the top 10 seller vr game. Despite that game is very limited and quite old.

AFAIR half life alyx and superhot are the only "real video game" PCVR game that also consistently become top seller every time there's a sale.

I almost never checked the store when they were not on sale so I don't know the top sellers when outside of sales season.

Last year, Quest 2 sales rivaled the ps2 first year sales at 10 million in a year. The previous best year for VR was around 1.3 million sales.

For me, it's mods. Playing gamess like rdr2, re2/3, alien Isolation, elite dangerous, Flight Sim, Iracing is sublime. Even Elden Ring is good at this early stage. The list is growing as is the quality. I would actually put some of these mods against many psvr offical ports I owned.

unfortunately mods didn't have enough ease of use and marketing push than a standalone games. so i don't think most people know/understand mods.
