NVIDIA waters down G-Sync Ultimate requirements

Nv have a habit of doing things like this
SLI needs a chip from nvidia on the motherboard to work
Evga agreed to buy the chip everyone else said no, surprise, surprise suddenly SLI didn't need the chip anymore ;)

That is not comparable imo. They are saying hdr doesn't matter because no one wants to make decent hdr pc monitor. The chip or gsync module are comparable but allowing the displays to be lower quality is bad for the user, whereas those other changes are good for the user and made products cheaper.

When consuming actual content the monitor is quite mediocre by comparison. Games/movies will look quite a bit worse while the small benefits will be unnoticeable. No one is going to notice a few MS of input lag and arent going to sit at an odd angle from their TV.

Perhaps not, but they will notice more accurate colours and reduced motion blur which the monitor also offers, to say nothing of the superior aspect ratio which has far more to offer for gaming than the higher peak brightness which is only going to be apparent in the most occasional of HDR scenes. Oh, and they'll notice the faster refresh in games where that's of benefit. 175hz is a lot more than 120hz.
