General Next Generation Rumors and Discussions [Post GDC 2020]

Had a quick watch of the PS5 teardown.
Both PS5 and XSX obviously took very different approaches, but i like them both.
Almost like elegance in engineering for PS5, elegance in simplicity for XSX.

PS5 looks to be the more expensive construction. Even possibly overall higher BOM?
Be interesting, when people can compare weight and size directly, heat and noise also. Although noise doesn't seem to be an issue for either.

Wonder how much the split board of the xsx costs, is it a lot more than a single one?

Need to watch them both again.

Porting future Xbox Games to Switch is “unsustainable,” claims Phil Spencer
October 19, 2020
In an interview with Kotaku, Xbox’s Phil Spencer was asked about a number of topics, from the state of Halo: Infinite to the recent acquisition of ZeniMax Media. One other topic that was broached was the relationship between Microsoft and Nintendo. When asked about the “prospect of more Xbox games coming to non-Xbox consoles,” the head of Xbox responded by claiming that “it doesn’t feel sustainable” to do so.
...
That being said, not all hope is lost, as Spencer then clarified that “In order to really support it, I would want a full Xbox ecosystem somewhere. And that probably means things like Live and Game Pass and stuff.”

It reads (at least the quoted text) like he's referring to PlayStation too. The implication appears to be that they'd be okay to have the games on other platforms providing they can have things like Game Pass added to them.

It does sound like they'd rather be a software service provider rather than concentrate heavily on hardware. I wonder if we'll get another hardware generation out of them?

It's always been the case that they will bring it to any device that will support their services.(xlive and gamepass)
But, its not just about what MS wants, it's about if the other party wants xbox services on there.

Is not strickly about getting out of hardware, it's about being in as many places as possible and their hardware also allows that.

The benefits of splitting the motherboard (PCB) into independent circuit boards also assists in easy upgrades in hardware as the entire motherboard need not be changes to accommodate the new hardware. Inclusion of new hardware requires an inclusion of an additional circuit board or can be attached to the existing circuit board, making customization smooth and functional. This design improves the efficiency of the components as the components can be designed at different specifications to maximize efficiency and performance. Also, the cooling of the circuit boards is easier and the heat generated by a single circuit board is less compared to a large motherboard. The heat produced can be dissipated quickly and effectively, improving the efficiency of the components drastically. Also, this makes design on cases for systems varied as the size of the boards are small and can be placed separately the size of systems can be minimized.

Probably so. I think MS wants to detach the potential of Xbox software and services from the potential of Xbox hardware. Given their market share it makes sense as the old model limits overall success to the number of consoles sold into the market.

It doesn't necessarily mean wanting to get out of the hardware game as core/hardcore gamers still have an affinity for the actual hardware. And we are the biggest buyers of software.

Additionally being in charge of some base level of hardware ensures that there is always an "affordable" base hardware system that can run software at a given quality level.

This doesn't mean that it is unnecessary for them to make the hardware, it would just mean that the hardware is only there to facilitate software revenue and that the base hardware is there to broaden the addressable market.

For instance, while an argument could be made that in this type of revenue paradigm that the XBS-X isn't needed as the PS5 exists with similar perfomance, it also ignores the existence of the XBS-S which leverages the technology in the XBS-X. If all titles that run on XBS-X will run on the XBS-S that means that there is now a platform at 299 USD that can run all titles that can run on machines at 499 USD, thus increasing the overall market.

If the XBS-X didn't exist, would developers make titles for the XBS-S? In other words in a market where there is just XBS-S, PS5 and PC, would the XBS-S be supported? Maybe, maybe not. But with the inclusion of the XBS-X it is guaranteed that any title that supports PS5, XBS-X, and PC will also support the XBS-S. Again, increasing the total addressable market.

Regards,
SB
