Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) (SARS-CoV-2) [2020]

"And I get it, and I understand it."

So he had to get the disease to understand it....how does that work for other things, does he have to be a victim of terrorism to understand it, get cancer to understand it....see that the world is round from space to understand it ?

And Kim jun Trump wanted to runaround in his car, so secret service guys had to don full protective gear to facilitate his little joy ride.

People who support this guy are actually worse than him ,he can't help being a self-centred thicko

If only he could understand police violence...

But anyways, this isn't the political thread, so let's keep politics out of it.

Something to keep in mind when someone is exposed to Covid19 and how their situation can change ...

Tweet Contexts:

"A humbling Herman Cain/coronavirus timeline:
6/24: Attends Trump rally, maskless
7/2: Tests positive for Covid-19
7/10: Says he’s improving
7/15: Says his doctors seem happy
7/27: Says he’s really getting better
7/30: Dies"

"Herman Cain died 37 days after Tulsa superspreader rally. Rose Garden superspreader event was 9/26. Nov 1 will be 37 days from Rose Garden event"

Gee, what could possibly go wrong...

LSU Eliminating COVID-19 Wellness Checks at Tiger Stadium for Missouri Game
LSU is doing away with medical wellness checks for fans entering Tiger Stadium for Saturday's game against Missouri.

The school said the decision was made to "reduce lines and wait times at gate entry points." Fans planning to attend the game are advised to "conduct a self-assessment" before making the trip.

LSU is also allowing fans to purchase alcohol, which they will have to consume at their seats to ensure the concourses don't become too crowded.

I'm surprised Facebook did anything at all to remove misinformation about Coronavirus/COVID-19.

Facebook, Twitter block Trump post over COVID-19 misinformation
Facebook and Twitter blocked a post Tuesday from President Donald Trump for spreading COVID-19 misinformation.

Trump's post falsely claimed that the COVID-19 is less deadly than the seasonal flu, prompting Twitter to hide the post on its platform and Facebook to remove the post altogether.

Doctors and scientists are working to estimate the mortality rate of COVID-19, but it is thought to be substantially higher -- possibly 10 times or more -- than that of most strains of the flu, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The post was made before it was know trump had covid
now facebook (much worse than twitter etc) is very bad at doing stuff about factually wrong posts, yet they did for this one? a bit strange
could it be it because after trump gets covid and goes to hospital it makes trump look like a dick

further evidence facebook would prefer to have a republican in power, its funny cause the republicans are always bleating about facebook and its actual billionare owner 'zuckenberg' being very left biased

Someone summarized it succinctly.

FB has a dilemma. It's got a liberal/progressive workforce but a very conservative user base. They're not the customers, the advertisers are. But they need users to please the advertisers, most specifically for the advertisers to pay FB.

FB is also led by a man who is so far out of his depth when it comes to real-world politics it's not even funny.

Let's face it, the lust for filthy lucre means that Facebook never have and never will make serious attempts to shut down the extremist bullshit which permeates the feed of many millions of their users. They'll pay lip service to the idea of removing hate speech and disinformation, claiming they want to be the good guys, but ultimately all that is of interest is the bottom line.

Facebook is a large part of the reason that politics is such a shitshow in the US (and it's rapidly heading that way on this side of the pond as well). As I've said in the past, whenever I hear someone espouse ludicrous conspiracy theory or political nonsense leaning far right, I always wonder just what sort of stuff they are pushed on their social media feed to make them believe that stuff. It always tends to be the right wing stuff as well, mostly, I'd imagine, because the extremist left doesn't have a pot to piss in and so can't afford to pay to spread their particular brand of rubbish.

President Trump and his staff defied CDC coronavirus guidelines 23 times since Sept. 1

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/othe...-guidelines-23-times-since-sept-1/ar-BB19M4QC

President Donald Trump and members of his administration have often flouted guidelines aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19, according to a review of news events by USA TODAY.

Since Sept. 1, the President and key Oval Office figures have violated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on the coronavirus at least 23 times, ignoring recommendations on mask wearing, social distancing, quarantining and more.

To prevent the spread of the disease that has killed more than 210,000 people in the U.S., the CDC recommends that:

  • People should quarantine for 14 days if they were within 6 feet of someone who has COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more.
  • People should wear masks in public settings and when around people who don’t live in the same household, especially in large groups and in other settings when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
  • Large in-person gatherings where it is difficult for individuals to remain spaced at least 6 feet apart and attendees travel from outside the local area are "highest-risk."
  • The CDC recommends that people who have had COVID-19 can be around other people again if they meet three criteria: It has been 10 days since symptoms first appeared and at least 24 hours with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications, and other symptoms are improving.

Here's when and where Trump and administration officials have broken those guidelines.

Trump hosted rallies with large, unmasked crowds - 15 times

Trump has held at least 15 rallies since Sept. 1. USA TODAY reviewed its coverage of the rallies and found that each violated guidance on face masks, social distancing and/or limits on the sizes of gatherings in the locality. Many violated all three categories. Most of the rallies were held outside on tarmacs or in hangars, but at least one was held indoors.

  • Trump held Sept. 3 rally in Pennsylvania
  • Trump held Sept. 8 rally in North Carolina
  • Trump held Sept. 10 rally in Michigan
  • Trump held Sept. 12 rally in Nevada
  • Trump held Sept. 13 rally in Nevada
  • Trump held Sept. 17 rally in Wisconsin
  • Trump held Sept. 18 rally in Minnesota
  • Trump held Sept. 19 rally in North Carolina
  • Trump held two Sept. 21 rallies in Ohio
  • Trump held Sept. 22 rally in Pennsylvania
  • Trump held Sept. 24 rally in Florida
  • Trump held Sept. 25 rally in Virginia
  • Trump held Sept. 26 rally in Pennsylvania
  • Trump held Sept. 30 rally and fundraiser in Minnesota

16. No masks were worn at Trump’s debate prep

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said that during debate preparation for President Trump from Saturday to Tuesday before the debate, none of the people present wore masks.

17. Nomination ceremony in Rose Garden saw 180-plus people, close together

Trump and at least seven other people who attended a White House ceremony unveiling Amy Coney Barrett's nomination to the Supreme Court have been infected, including two Republican members of the Judiciary Committee.

Though the activity was held outside at the Rose Garden, the majority of the 180-plus people in attendance sat close to each other for an extended period, and most people didn’t wear masks. There were smaller indoor gatherings as part of the occasion.

"No one was wearing masks in the room when we were prepping the president during that period of time," Christie said. "And the group was about five or six people, in total."

18. Trump not tested before debate

Trump arrived at the debate venue at Cleveland Clinic's Sheila and Eric Samson Pavilion for the first time at 4:23 p.m. It was then that he should have been tested for the virus, but, according to Fox News anchor Chris Wallace, who moderated the debate on Sept. 29 in Ohio, the timing of Trump's arrival meant that there was insufficient time for Trump to get tested and receive a result.

19. Trump family largely ignored mask rules at debate

Wallace said in an interview Friday on his network that the Trump family members — including Ivanka Trump, a presidential advisor — who watched the debate in-person did not wear masks as they were instructed.

Wallace said the rules called for everybody except for Trump, Biden and the moderator to wear face masks. He said a safety personnel member from the Cleveland Clinic came up to the family when they were seated and offered them masks in case they didn't have them "and they were waved away."

20. Trump held fundraiser in New Jersey

Trump participated in a roundtable event with supporters and a fundraising reception at his golf club in Bedminster.

It was after this event that Bloomberg reported Hicks was experiencing symptoms associated with the coronavirus. White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said the White House learned of Hicks' positive test as Marine One was lifting off the South Lawn on Thursday to take the president to a fundraiser in New Jersey. Questions later surfaced about why Trump attended the campaign event knowing he had been exposed to someone with a positive test result.

21. Trump took ride outside hospital

Days after testing positive for COVID-19, Trump was driven around outside Walter Reed Hospital Sunday night to wave at supporters.

Dr. James P. Phillips, an attending physician at Walter Reed, tweeted that everybody in the vehicle with Trump should be quarantined for 14 days. "They might get sick. They may die," he tweeted. "For political theater. Commanded by Trump to put their lives at risk for theater. This is insanity."

22. Press secretary removes mask to brief reporters

Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, who was not quarantining days after several people in the White House had tested positive, removed her mask to brief reporters outside the White House Sunday, one day before she tested positive.

23. Barr may not quarantine for long enough

Attorney General William Barr, who was also present at the White House event, has tested negative for the coronavirus four times since early Friday, a Justice Department spokeswoman said Sunday. He announced that he would temporarily self-quarantine, reversing a decision made that he would not. That said, he said that he was planning on returning back to work "this week," per CNN.

Is there any wonder why 22 players/coaches/personnel of the Tennessee Titans have covid-19.

Take a look at this picture of Titans outside linebackers coach Shane Bowen

i

Why the heck is his mask down around his neck and not over his mouth and nose.

Sept. 26: Titans outside linebackers coach Shane Bowen tests positive.

So it is very easy to see him spreading the virus to his players with no mask on.

I see people without masks every day at businesses around here and even with Wisconsin being pounded with new cases lately. There are signs about it being mandatory by law, but nobody enforces it.

The difficulty in diagnosing cases quickly and accurately is all too clear given the following report:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...ive-cases-in-covid-study-had-no-core-symptoms

(report based on this study: https://www.dovepress.com/three-qua...re-asymptomatic-an-peer-reviewed-article-CLEP)

Fundamentally, the random testing carried out by the UK's Office for National Statistics to attempt to calculate the spread found that over 80% of those who tested positive between April and June didn't have any of the main reported symptoms at the time (cough, fever, loss of taste/smell). Obviously, some may have developed them after the test, but it's still a very high figure which indicates that the asymptomatic spread may be even higher than realised.

This leads me to think that Dr. Michael Mina's suggestion of a change in which the way that testing is carried out is the only way in which we are going to be able to get on top of the spread of the virus:

https://harvardmagazine.com/2020/08/covid-19-test-for-public-health

Fundamentally, try to produce billions of lateral flow antigen tests for everybody to use frequently to pick up the majority of those who are infectious. Not as accurate as PCR but fast and accurate(ish) so, providing they are cheap enough, accurate enough, and possible to produce in enormous quantities, they could help shutdown lots of the asymptomatic spread which obviously keeps the virus spreading whenever restrictions are loosened.

(I feel certain that this potential testing policy must have been previously discussed in this or another thread, but a quick search for 'Mina' didn't bring up a result)

Grim new analyses spotlight just how hard US is failing in pandemic
High death rates, large death toll, mental health crisis, and economic ruin.

upload_2020-10-12_19-51-40.png

“After the first peak in early spring, US death rates from COVID-19 and from all causes remained higher than even countries with high COVID-19 mortality,” Bilinski and Emanuel conclude. “This may have been a result of several factors, including weak public health infrastructure and a decentralized, inconsistent US response to the pandemic.”

Heavy toll
In another article in the JAMA series, researchers at the Virginia Commonwealth University and Yale focused on the United States alone. They compared the expected number of deaths in the US to the actual number between March and August, finding more than 225,000 extra deaths—a 20 percent jump. And only 67 percent of those extra deaths were directly linked to COVID-19 on death certificates. The rest may have been misclassified or been due to disruptions in health care during the pandemic or other pandemic-related problems.

If the pandemic continues in the US as it has, the researchers’ estimate suggests that there may be more than 400,000 excess US deaths for the whole of 2020. The significance of this estimate “cannot be overstated,” write Howard Bauchner, editor-in-chief of JAMA, and Phil Fontanarosa, JAMA’s executive editor, in an accompanying editorial. The toll “accounts for what could be declines in some causes of death, like motor vehicle crashes, but increases in others, like myocardial infarction.”

The authors of that study attributed the poor US performance to:

Bilinski and Emanuel conclude. “This may have been a result of several factors, including weak public health infrastructure and a decentralized, inconsistent US response to the pandemic.”

Unfortunately though, the current new case rates are higher in several EU countries than in the US. So their death numbers may catch up to the US.

Well I guess we have the answer to the question posed on one of the forums here a few months ago.

What health system is the best equiped to deal with covid-19.?
700px-Health_care_cost_rise.svg.png

The usa is obviously not spending enough on health care, they need to ditch Obamacare and all other public healthcare systems, get gdp spending on health up to 50% gdp and then and only then can they match other countries spending 5% of their gdp on health.

To do otherwise is communism and un-american
