Three-Quarters of Recovered Coronavirus Patients Have Heart Damage Months Later, Study Finds

Well over half a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, experts are learning more about the virus that was initially believed to be only a respiratory illness. Over time, it’s become clear that COVID-19 attacks far more than just the lungs, and new research indicates that it can leave lasting heart damage, even in formerly healthy people who have recovered from the initial symptoms.

Two new studies, both from Germany, examined the effects of COVID-19 on the heart, with one focusing on recovered patients and the other on older victims of the virus.

The first study, published Monday in JAMA Cardiology, found that three-quarters of recovered COVID-19 patients were left with structural changes to their hearts, even two months later.

The researchers examined cardiac MRIs from 100 recovered COVID-19 patients between the ages of 45 to 53, and compared them to MRIs of similar people who did not contract the virus. Most of the COVID-19 patients had recovered at home, while 33 had to be hospitalized at some point in their illness.

Of the 100 COVID-19 patients, 78 had structural changes to their hearts. Within that group, 76 had a biomarker that is typically found in patients who had a heart attack, and 60 had heart inflammation, called myocarditis. The patients were all “mostly healthy … prior to their illness,” the researchers said.

"The patients and ourselves were both surprised by the intensity and prevalence of these findings, and that they were still very pronounced even though the original illness had been by then already a few weeks away," study co-author Dr. Valentina Puntmann, a consultant physician, cardiologist and clinical pharmacologist at University Hospital Frankfurt in Germany, told UPI.

The second study, also published in JAMA Cardiology, looked at autopsy reports from 39 COVID-19 victims between 78 and 89 years old who died at the start of the pandemic. The researchers found that the virus had infected the heart in 41 percent of the patients.

“We see signs of viral replication in those that are heavily infected,” study co-author Dirk Westermann, a cardiologist at the University Heart and Vascular Centre in Hamburg, told Stat. “We don’t know the long-term consequences of the changes in gene expression yet. I know from other diseases that it’s obviously not good to have that increased level of inflammation.”

On Sunday, Boston Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez confirmed that he won’t yet start the new MLB season because he is dealing with myocarditis, the heart inflammation found in the first study, in the months after he contracted COVID-19. Rodriguez is currently waiting on further MRI results to see if he can play.

“It’s been hard, weird. First, I got the COVID, feel all the symptoms and everything, at some point thinking that’s how bad it was the first four days. And then get here, and now that I have this, I was hoping that I get ready and go for the season as quick as I can,” Rodriguez told WEEI. “Now I’ve got to get a week off, wait for the results of the next MRI. I would say it’s been weird, really weird for me."

The Phillies' 2020 season was put on hold by Major League Baseball on Tuesday after at least 17 Miami Marlins players tested positive for COVID-19 between Opening Day and Tuesday.

The root of the Marlins' sudden outbreak hasn't been confirmed, but according to USA Today baseball insider Bob Nightengale, it started in Atlanta.

During an appearance in the 5:00-5:15 block on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, Nightengale reported that "at least" one Marlins player, possibly more, left the team hotel and went out while in Atlanta, days before the season began.

I think it's a wake-up call for all the other teams, saying, 'You'd better not go out at night.' Because if you bring it in, you've got a chance to knock off the season by yourself.

Well, I think a couple guys went out in Atlanta. That's what happened. I don't think it was any kind of fluke, from the bus driver or a pilot, any of that. I believe some guys got careless, at least one guy did for sure, he went out, and came back positive and spread it around.
Major League Baseball and the Marlins have yet to publicly discuss the cause of the team's outbreak.

As of 11:00am July 29, 2020, Dallas County Health and Human Services is reporting 704 additional confirmed cases of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total confirmed case count in Dallas County to 48,732, including 658 confirmed deaths.

The additional 36 deaths being reported today include:

  • A man in his 40’s who was a resident of the City of Dallas. He expired in an area hospital ED, and had underlying high risk health conditions.
  • A man in his 50’s who was a resident of the City of Dallas. He had been critically ill in an area hospital, and did not have underlying high risk health conditions.
  • A man in his 50’s who was a resident of the City of Dallas. He had been critically ill in an area hospital, and did not have underlying high risk health conditions.

Over 1,800 children under 18 years of age have been diagnosed with confirmed COVID-19 since July 1st. During this timeframe, 38 children have been hospitalized for COVID-19, including 4 admitted to intensive care units. Of all confirmed cases requiring hospitalization to date, more than two-thirds have been under 65 years of age. Diabetes has been an underlying high-risk health condition reported in about a third of all hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

The percentage of respiratory specimens testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 remains high, with about 22% of symptomatic patients presenting to area hospitals testing positive in week 29. Of cases requiring hospitalization who reported employment, over 80% have been critical infrastructure workers, with a broad range of affected occupational sectors, including: healthcare, transportation, food and agriculture, public works, finance, communications, clergy, first responders and other essential functions.

Of the 658 confirmed deaths reported to date, about a third have been associated with long-term care facilities

Texas is still mixing Viral and Antibody Tests in the worldometers report on total test numbers which reports 3,849,040 tests which is inflated by 309,672 Antibody Tests.

As of today the real number of Total Viral Tests for Texas is 3,539,368 which works out to be 122,064 per 1M population so Texas is really the 10th worst state in testing

Couple who insisted on 100 wedding guests diagnosed with Covid-19

The wedding, that took place in early July, was held at the SS Peter and Paul’s Church, which overlooks Washington Square Park in San Francisco, California.

The couple also held a rehearsal dinner the night before the event, which more than 40 guests attended, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

As the guests were arriving at the venue, an official from the city showed up and told them that it could not go ahead as planned, because the amount of guests involved violated an executive order in the state.

The couple were still able to have a wedding of some kind, but with a majority of the guests watching the service via video-conferencing service Zoom and a select few in the church.

The couple, alongside eight of their guests tested positive for the virus, after they started showing symptoms of Covid-19 within five days of the ceremony.

The guest list at the wedding included people travelling from all over the US, including Texas and Arizona, which have both struggled with the pandemic and recorded record cases in the last six weeks.

The Archdiocese spokesman for the area, Mike Brown, added that none of the guests who contracted the virus have been in contact with the church to let them know about their positive test results.

DALLAS -- As of 11:00am July 30, 2020, Dallas County Health and Human Services is reporting 537 additional confirmed cases of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total confirmed case count in Dallas County to 49,269, including 664 confirmed deaths.

The additional 6 deaths being reported today include:

A man in his 50’s who was a resident of the City of Dallas. He had been critically ill in an area hospital, and had underlying high risk health conditions.
A woman in her 60’s who was a resident of a long-term care facility in the City of Richardson. She had been critically ill in an area hospital, and had underlying high risk health conditions.
A woman in her 70’s who was a resident of the City of Dallas. She had been critically ill in an area hospital, and had underlying high risk health conditions.
A man in his 70’s who was a resident of the City of Dallas. He had been hospitalized, and had underlying high risk health conditions.
A woman in her 90’s who was a resident of a long-term care facility in the City of Dallas. She had been hospitalized, and had underlying high risk health conditions.
A woman in her 90’s who was a resident of a long-term care facility in the City of Dallas. She expired in the facility, and did not have underlying high risk health conditions.

Over 1,800 children under 18 years of age have been diagnosed with confirmed COVID-19 since July 1st. During this timeframe, 38 children have been hospitalized for COVID-19, including 4 admitted to intensive care units. Of all confirmed cases requiring hospitalization to date, more than two-thirds have been under 65 years of age. Diabetes has been an underlying high-risk health condition reported in about a third of all hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

The percentage of respiratory specimens testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 remains high, with about 22% of symptomatic patients presenting to area hospitals testing positive in week 29. Of cases requiring hospitalization who reported employment, over 80% have been critical infrastructure workers, with a broad range of affected occupational sectors, including: healthcare, transportation, food and agriculture, public works, finance, communications, clergy, first responders and other essential functions.

Of the 664 confirmed deaths reported to date, about a third have been associated with long-term care facilities.

So as Ohio new case counts continue to increase, the Governor has put in place a new order that Bars can only sell alcohol until 10pm and collect any unconsumed at 11pm. I'm not certain how the expect this to make any sort of impact, as it likely means all the young or dumb fucks out partying and spreading the disease will simply do so earlier. They need to close the bars if they want to be serious about stopping the spread. Instead they're doing fuck-for-all tiny measures that won't make any difference.

COVID-19 Update: Liquor Sale and On-Premises Consumption Limits, Mass Gathering Order, Updated Risk Levels

ALCOHOL SALE AND ON-PREMISES CONSUMPTION LIMITS

Governor DeWine announced today that he has asked the Ohio Liquor Control Commission to call an emergency meeting to consider enacting a statewide emergency rule to limit liquor sales at establishments that serve alcohol for on-site consumption.

The rule would prevent the sale of alcohol at these liquor-permitted establishments beginning at 10:00 p.m. each night. On-premises consumption must end by 11:00 p.m. Businesses may stay open, and establishments that sell food can continue serving meals until closing.

Governor DeWine requested the new administrative rule after seeing outbreaks associated with bars across Ohio including Toledo, Cleveland, and Columbus.

"The problem is, bars, by their nature, lend themselves to a revolving door of people in close contact, oftentimes indoors, with interactions between many different people," said Governor DeWine. "While this may have been fine during normal times, these are not normal times. We must make a change to curb the social behaviors that will cause this virus to continue to spread."

Separately, Governor DeWine is also asking the commission to raise the number of liquor and mixed drinks permitted to be purchased for carryout with a meal from two drinks to three drinks.

The Ohio Liquor Control Commission will hold its emergency meeting tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. If the emergency administrative rule is approved, Governor DeWine will sign an executive order making it effective tomorrow night.

"The good news is that more people are wearing masks in our urban counties and we are seeing the spread slow because of that," said Governor DeWine. "The bad news is that Ohio's more rural counties are turning orange with significantly more spread taking place. I will again urge those who live in rural counties to wear masks while in public."

An article on the switch from the CDC reporting to the NHS now reporting to the "Covid Tracking Project" run by an independent company hired by the feds:

But unlike the prior releases from CDC, which provided estimates on hospital capacity based on the responses, this file only gives totals for the hospitals that reported data. It’s unclear which hospitals did not report, how large they are, or whether the reported data is representative.

It’s also unclear if it’s accurate. New York state, for instance, reported that fewer than 600 people were currently hospitalized with COVID-19, as of Friday. Federal data released the same day pegged the number of suspected and confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations at around 1,800.

Louisiana says more than 1,500 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19. The federal data puts the figure at fewer than 700.

Nationally, The COVID Tracking Project reports that more than 56,000 people were hospitalized around the country with the virus, as of Thursday.

The data released by HHS on Friday puts the figure at more than 70,000.
