Data as of 7/1/2020 @3:50 PM:

Total Tests: 2,174,548 (Up +55,512)

Total Viral Tests: 1,921,948 (Up +52,666)

Only 88.4% of Total Tests are Viral Tests the other 11.6% of tests are the useless
Antibody Tests

Cases Reported: 168,062 (Up +8,076)

Fatalities: 2,481 (Up +57)

Texas tests per 1M population are 74,995 (Up +1,914) which places Texas as the 10th worst State. No change from yesterday.

Click this link: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us and on the page click the Tests / 1M pop column twice to sort from worst to first

They are using roughly 28.996 million as the population of Texas.

Texas is mixing Viral and Antibody Tests in the total test numbers which is very bad as Antibody Tests are useless in determining if someone has the Coronavirus.

As of today the real number of Total Viral Tests for Texas is 1,921,948 which works out to be 66,283 per 1M population so Texas is really the 6th worst state in testing

Cases in Texas are exploding

‘I don’t need his advice anymore’, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says of top COVID-19 expert Dr. Fauci

Patrick dismissed Fauci's advice as cases of the coronavirus have surged in Texas.

AUSTIN -- As cases of the coronavirus surge in Texas, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says he is done listening to the country’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci.

On Fox News Tuesday, Patrick accused Fauci of being wrong “every time, on every issue,” and a day later pointed to some of Fauci’s comments from the beginning of the pandemic as examples.

“I don’t need his advice anymore,” Patrick told host Laura Ingraham. “We will listen to a lot of science. We will listen to a lot of doctors. And Gov. Abbott, myself and other state leaders will make the decision. No thank you, Dr. Fauci.”

----

Are you kidding me.

Texas Governor Abbott has done everything wrong in opening up Texas. Never once listened to science and in fact ignored science.

And who can forget Patrick saying that the old should just die.

Does it give any examples of how Fauci was wrong?

That's not an attitude that I'd like leading me...

Ignoring the usual political dickery across the pond, this Swedish study shows there might be some positive news, at least:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53248660

A lot more people apparently have T-cells to combat the virus than have shown an antibody response in previous testing. In this small study, 30% of blood donors tested in Sweden had these T-cells indicating they have some immunity to the virus or perhaps just immunity to the worst potential symptoms of the virus. You'd imagine these people will have mostly been asymptomatic when they originally caught the virus. The caveat is that it's not known how long-lasting this might be or if they could still be infectious to others were they to be exposed to the virus again. Still, it is something positive. Not really a step towards herd immunity, but it might indicate the fatality rate might be lower than feared if no vaccine can be found and more and more people are ultimately exposed.

I was hoping for some positive news about the Darpa early test for Covid-19 which was supposedly going to be fast-tracked by the FDA back in May. Since the initial news reports, absolutely nothing more has been mentioned and I've come up blank when trying to find further information. A test which could check for the virus just one or two days after infection would be a godsend when it came to travel/quarantine. Not to mention helping the economy as people could spend less time away from work.

The local news coverage of this story made the Texas governor out to be a real raging idiot. They followed his statements with medical personnel statements and guidance and how the Governor ignored them all.

I am not sure how the FauxNews would cover this story.

Alabama students throwing 'COVID parties' to see who gets infected: Officials
Rising infections prompt Gov. Kay Ivy to extend 'Safer at Home' orders.

Students in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 have been attending parties in the city and surrounding area as part of a disturbing contest to see who can catch the virus first, a city council member told ABC News on Wednesday.

Tuscaloosa City Councilor Sonya McKinstry said students have been organizing "COVID parties" as a game to intentionally infect each other with the contagion that has killed more than 127,000 people in the United States. She said she recently learned of the behavior and informed the city council of the parties occurring in the city.

She said the organizers of the parties are purposely inviting guests who have COVID-19.

"They put money in a pot and they try to get COVID. Whoever gets COVID first gets the pot. It makes no sense," McKinstry said. "They're intentionally doing it."

Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Randy Smith told the City Council on Tuesday that he has confirmed the students' careless behavior.

As of now, Florida is reporting +10,109 new cases since yesterday putting their 30 day surge at 111,659 total.

Arizona is at 87,425 with +3,333 new cases. Georgia is at 87,709 with +3,472 new cases. A delta of 284. I suppose Georgia doesn't want to give up the spot.

Wanted to note recent positivity rates for US states, graphic taken from story here: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-53228134

Policies on masks are one of the factors differentiating states like Texas from those seeing lower transmission rates.

In 11 states with mask rules in place - including New York and Illinois - the number of new cases has declined 25% in the last two weeks, according to an analysis by the Philadelphia Inquirer. On the other hand, in states where only some employees have to wear masks, new cases have risen by an average of 70%.

Perhaps God just hates Republicans?

Regarding the questions of masks, it is probably as much the direction of the rhetoric from those running the states and the beliefs of their constituents as the actual use of masks. I don't doubt there is a sizeable chunk of the population in these states proudly strutting around maskless and not even attempting social distancing when in situations where it would really be sensible to be wearing them.

Ohio has implemented a new level warning system on a per county basis. More on that in another post.

Ohio is still having Technical Difficulties with their systems, but they did report the basic numbers.

New cases is at +1,301.
New Hospitalizations at +127
New Deaths at +27.

Here is the trends which is using reported date and not arbitrary and incorrectly identified user reported onset date. This graphic is resized by ~ 75% and taken from the State's Current Trends page: https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/covid-19/dashboards/current-trends

<< No Trends due to Ohio Technical Difficulties with their systems >>

Here is the raw data for the last few days, filling in the limited data that is available:

I don't doubt there is a sizeable chunk of the population in these states proudly strutting around maskless and not even attempting social distancing when in situations where it would really be sensible to be wearing them.

My sister's coworker said last weekend she was up at https://putinbay.com/]Put-In-Bay[/url], a Northern Ohio summer hot-spot for rest and relaxation, where a lot of folks would head to for a weekend of drinking and partying. The coworker said they were the only ones wearing a mask at the entire island. Even at the local grocery stores the people wearing masks is in the minority. This is in Ohio where even the Republican Governor is urging people to wear masks, yet he's stopping short of actually ordering masks to be mandatory.

Ohio was down around 350-420 daily new cases just a handful of days ago, and now it's at 1,301 and likely surging higher.

It's like everyone just surrendered and is willing to roll the dice as to their survival.

If I was any other country I would entirely place travel bans on the entire United States. The country is too damn stupid to either not believe in science or to completely ignore science. We don't deserve the trust of any other county. Do the rest of the world a huge favor and don't let the US continue the spread.

So here's the Ohio Public Health Advisory System. Apologies as I can't find the information explained as well anywhere other than the Twitter account of the Ohio Governor. There is some information here, https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/covid-19/public-health-advisory-system/

Ohio Public Health Advisory System
The Public Health Advisory Alert System is a color-coded system designed to supplement existing statewide orders through a data-driven framework to assess the degree of the virus’ spread and to engage and empower individuals, businesses, communities, local governments, and others in their response and actions.

The Public Health Advisory Alert System is a color-coded system designed to supplement existing statewide orders through a data-driven framework to assess the degree of the virus’ spread and to engage and empower individuals, businesses, communities, local governments, and others in their response and actions.

The system consists of four levels that provide Ohioans with guidance as to the severity of the problem in the counties in which they live. The levels are determined by seven data indicators that identify the risk level for each county and a corresponding color code to represent that risk level.

  1. New Cases Per Capita
    • Flagged if greater than 50 cases per 100,000 residents over the last two weeks. Allows for counties with different population sizes to be appropriately compared.
  2. Sustained Increase in New Cases
    • Flagged if increasing trend of at least 5 days in overall cases by onset date. Refl ects disease spread in the population.
  3. Proportion of Cases Not Congregate Cases
    • Flagged if proportion of cases that are not in a congregate setting goes over 50% in at least one of the last 3 weeks. Used as indicator of greater risk of community spread.
  4. Sustained Increase in Emergency Room Visits
    • Flagged if increasing trend of at least 5 days in the number of visits to the emergency department with COVID-like illness or a diagnosis. Provides information on the health care seeking behavior of the population and a sense of how concerned residents are about their current health status and the virus.
  5. Sustained Increase in Outpatient Visits
    • Flagged if increasing trend of at least 5 days in the number of people going to a health care provider with COVID symptoms who then receive a COVID confi rmed or suspected diagnosis. Provides information on the health care seeking behavior of the population and a sense of how concerned residents are about their current health status and the virus.
  6. Sustained Increase in New COVID-19 Hospital Admissions
    • Flagged if increasing trend of at least 5 days in the number of new hospitalizations due to COVID. Important indicator of hospital burden and disease severity.
  7. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Bed Occupancy
    • Flagged if percentage of the occupied ICU beds in each region goes above 80% for at least three days in the last week. Provides an indication of the capacity available to manage a possible surge of severely ill patients.

A look at the counties in Alert Level 3:

TRUMBULL COUNTY: In addition to multiple outbreaks in congregate settings, Trumbull County also currently has an outbreak in a health care facility. Trumbull County has now met four of the seven indicators.

HURON COUNTY: We’re seeing a spike in Huron County primarily due to workplace outbreaks, including several outbreaks at farm operations. They are meeting five of the seven indicators.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY: Meeting five of seven indicators. Here we’ve seen average daily visits to the ER more than double. Outpatient visits have more than quadrupled.

BUTLER COUNTY: Meting four of seven indicators. As of this past week, the average new cases in Butler County per day doubled. The number of COVID-positive patients in the Southwest Region’s hospital beds and ICUs has also doubled since the second week of June.

CUYAHOGA COUNTY: While many cases during the last three weeks have been within congregate settings, the County still has a growing number of cases outside of these settings, indicating that the risk of continued community transmission is high. They're meeting 4 of 7 indicators.

HAMILTON COUNTY: Five of seven indicators. Hamilton County had been holding steady at the end of May and into early June with an average of 30 new cases a day. That changed this past week. New cases each day have quadrupled to approximately 130 cases per day.

FRANKLIN COUNTY: Five of seven indicators. They are on our "Watch List" because growth in the number of new cases -- 1,500 in the past two weeks -- is explosive, with much of that growth occurring in the last seven days. Franklin County is now close to Alert Level 4.

Data as of 7/2/2020 @3:40 PM:

Total Tests: 2,212,947 (Up +38,399)

Total Viral Tests: 1,975,803 (Up +53,855)

Fatalities: 2,525 (Up +44)

Texas tests per 1M population are 76,319 (Up +1,324) which places Texas as the 10th worst State.

As of today the real number of Total Viral Tests for Texas is 1,975,803 which works out to be 68,141 per 1M population so Texas is really the 8th worst state in testing
