Xbox Series X [XBSX] [Release November 10 2020]

That 100GB figure is a head scratcher unless it was just meant to be illustrative of a typical next gen game size. Maybe it's something like an 8K block size on a 24bit addressing on the storage. Even so nothing adds up to a 100GB limit. Or 256K on 19bits. It's like 128GB is the closest, no matter what block size we choose, in case it's an addressing limitation. It's 37bit address in bytes regardless where there might be a limit. Either on the storage adressing or the virtual mapping.

On windows, isn’t the recommended min and max (1.5X-4X) of a page dictated by the amount of system RAM? At 13.5 GBs reserved for the game, you get 108 GB page file using 8 as the max factor. At 12.5 GB it would be 100 GBs with an 8 times RAM limit.

Windows 10’s max page file size without taking account of RAM is 16TB.

Something VR/AR could be not tied to a generation and in Eastmen’s field of current interest. And it would be highly overdue on Microsoft’s side to come with something.

I doubt it after Phil Spencer having dismissed VR so many times.

The sad part of it being WMR2 would be that XSX doesn't appear to have the ports support it. The Quest can run off a regular USB 3 port now, so maybe there's hope.

Hm, seems probable, PC and PS are getting more and more into VR. Personally i don't care for VR at all (neither on PC or PS), but MS probably has to move in that direction too.
But if it isn't tied to a generation, it means that VR would be compatible with Xone and XSX?

Project Griffin hints: not generation specific, so platform agnostic and not hardware.

So it sounds like it's a software effort. Whatever it is, it seems like it is further along than MS had originally planned. That's a good sign, that not everything is impacted negatively by the pandemic.

Mybe it is specifically 100 GB so that when the next-next Xbox rolls around they can add a optane/3dxpoint/equivalent drive to put it on to further increase speeds. :p

For what? Jumping from one game to another in 1 second instead of 3? I doubt Optane could bring anything to consoles that couldn't be better covered with more RAM at a low price and better performance.

There was that rumor about MS having the ability to apply the ML upscaling and addition of HDR to older video content.......

DF discussed it in the context of games (curated list, no doubt subject to permission); video content could be more difficult from a legal standpoint even if it's theoretically doable if they can do it for games.

Maybe they'd license the tech to movie studios to add ML HDR editions of movies/series to the market. ಠ_ಠ

Swear MS talked about the HDR as it possibly beimg a system level feature (for BC anyway)

I don't think MS has said anything about ML upscaling specifically. They've been discussions around based on their presentation last year about Direct ML, as one of the examples of its uses was ML upscaling on Forza Horizon.
Also add to the fact that they say they made customizations for ML from working with azure team. Probably just the reduced precision operations, how much that can b be used for upscaling who knows.

Does the uploader have some sort of connection to the industry?

No idea. I didn't even look at who uploaded it. The discussion on Reddit seems to be he's taking videos from other sources like Austin Evans & stripping out the commentary.

An interesting thought experiment resulting from sampler feedback streaming is to try and estimate the bandwidth requirementfor a typical case of use.
80 MB is a fair estimate for a 4K framebuffer.
The automatic fallback to a lower MIP and seamless transition to the required one provides us with n frametimes to stream the required tiles from the SSD. (note that this is due to the fact that the bandwidth of RAM is orders of magnitude higher than that of an SSD and plagues all implementations of virtual texture streaming . Having a "superfast SSD" (as per MS and Sony PR) won't eliminate it.)
Let n = 2 and the frame be 1 frame/s.
Scenario 1: 100% of the textures are not immediatley available in memory and have to be streamed

Estimated throughput requirement = (Framebuffer/(frametime x 2) = (80/(2/60)) = 2.4 GB/s

However, this scenario represents an overly aggresive form of texture sampling and most of the data required will already be found in memory (that's why a 99% culling is recommended in the github whitepaper for sampler feedback. No free lunch.)
Let's say 50% of the framebuffer is actually required (extremely generous). Then,

Estimated throughput requirement = (40/(2/60)) = 1.2 GB/s.

If n is increased to 3,

Estimated throughput requirement = (40/(3/60)) = 0.8 GB/s.

Interesting
