Inference can be used at a much lower precision. And DLSS is inference only.

Much of new names this generation, texture screen space shading, sampler feedback, velocity engine, direct storage, bcpack, geometry engine.

That's a good marketing strategy: renaming things or inventing new names for software/APIs that have old hardware implementation.

That's not indicative of our industry. Most are not that low. I'm fairly positive those are only being looked at recently and that comes with the release of Turing.

There has not been hardware advantages at lower precision until recently, a lot of DL and ML stuff really took off during Kepler.

AFAIK, there is a lot advantage to a lower precision for inference, if it's significantly faster clocked.
And even for learning: low precision with high precision accumulators is a pretty good thing.

It confuses people, Geometry Engine, Kraken, some might think of pirates of the carribean :p

Dunno. Both are a well known names, not renamed, existing algorithms/technologies. But "Velocity engine", "DX12 Ultimate", that's like next level of PR and marketing. :)

We select precision levels based upon the level of sensitivity and what we need it for. Some solutions may require double precision, others can get away with less. it really depends and there is no correct answer.

Enhanced geometry/texture LODs will make the scaling more linear, basically, so tougher yes. :p

If that's not done, at some point the texel to pixel ratio will be low enough to be more efficient for texture cache reasons, so it depends on what current gen title we're looking at - most won't have super ridiculous textures while a lot of times even the PC port just ends up having a stupid sized cache or uncompressed setting. VRS also gets better the higher the pixel count, although that probably needs developer intervention to implement. Delta compression should be better at that high of a resolution (more similar pixels per quad/triangle). Culling is a lot better with RDNA vs GCN as well, so for current gen LODs, there may be sufficient culling along with that high a number of pixels per triangle at the same time. A game would probably need to already run at near 4K on 4Pro to have a decent enough chance.

Higher bandwidth will be needed to sustain a higher shading/ROP throughput, yes.

Well, the inclusion of 4 bit is not incidental. The rise of ML algorithms and hardware supporting it has run into scaling issues like any other industry would. In particular issues with model size, run energy, and speed. 4 bit is the minimal amount we can use for some tasks and because we use 4-bit the models can run smaller, use less energy, have a speed up in calculation time, and with the right hardware, pack a lot more of them.

I would say it's an evolution of things coming together. Companies desperately trying to save costs because training costs are so high.
 
One thing that has bothered me since the XSX teardown is there appears to be a lot of empty space inside the XSX chassis, and I'm not sure oh why. Is there a good reason they just continue with the Xbox One X chassis?

The heatsink appears to be a very similar size between One X and XSX, so cooling requirements should be somewhat similar, and the motherboard is also similar in size.

The One X is already very quiet, and is a great shape. Even the cost of manufacture must be reasonable given they they are generally price at £349.99 now and as low as £299.99 on special offers.

It just boggles my mind that they would expend all that engineering effort to simply forgo it for what seems a "just because".....

They've been pretty clear from the start it was for cooling purposes, and to keep it quiet. They've also repeated it many times since.

Pretty sure they wouldn't have gone with a such a radical design that could hit or miss the mark unless what they said was true.
 
Especially when SeriesX DevKits have the same form factor as OneX DevKits.

the authors of the 4k 120fps published this amusing game before. Let's see how the game looks and run when it comes out but it certainly looks promising.

So they basically chose this quality of a game so they would be able to check box the 4k 120fps exclusive game for marketing purposes?
That barely pushes the console. The latest Ori game is far more impressive and that would one would have been more interesting to showcase at 4k and 120fps.

Edit: Oh they will reveal a different game. My bad :)
Wonder what that would be
