What if next-gen console(s) could run PC games too? [2020] *spawn*

The XSX is a pc, w10 of some sort on that would make it attractive as a allround box. All games are crossplat between already.

What's the business case for enabling Win 10 and Steam on XBSX? It'd mean MS losing license fees to gamers buying Steam games instead of XBox games, and the PC market being significantly undercut with an all-in-one that's far better value than any other PC.

Its a wholesale bad idea imo, the amount of vulnerabilities that are in windows is huge, it would be opening up a platform that has had a great history (this gen) of resisting attacks to an entirely new surface that could be used to attack the box.

It didn't seem to impact Xbox One when they allowed every console to switch into Developer mode and run any program that could be produced by a simple one time $100 registration. Granted that meant offline and some other restrictions but it didn't lead to any rampant piracy or hacks into the gaming system.

It would allow their hardware to reach more consumers who may try out the xbox side of things or even try out their Game Pass Ultimate service. Maybe it's just to be able to show some Sony titles that hit PC as being able to run on Xbox branded hardware. But ... Tough to see how it brings in those publishing fees that their console publishing would bring in.

I don't really know how this stuff works but aren't XBone games run on a virtual machine. Would Desktop Win10 just be run as another virtual machine and be stuck in it's sandbox?

MS is very mindful of OEM's, one of the reasons that the surface range is always at the higher price points.
No OEM could produce PC's at competing prices compared to the consoles. That's even if MS doesn't take any kind of loss on the hardware.

Regarding PC gamepass, well that's what PC's are for.
As for business reasons for MS, can't see that either.

There's a lot of security built right into the hardware at every possible point.

Depends on which OS as well. windows 10X is not purchase-able for install for instance in the same way that IOS is not.

10X is container based. Everything runs in its own containers. So. Yea could be a much different OS from standard windows. You probably don’t want it to run standard windows because at the console price point it’s going to be used for the wrong reasons.

the business case is that you’re attempting to appeal to a wider audience. That audience that only really needs a chrome book for their day to day life but also wants to play a console.

a hybrid could fill a niche here.

Like a semi-portable hybrid?
Or better positioned; a super good console for people outside of North America where TVs and screens and real estate is smaller in nature. There could be quite a few setups of a desk + monitor. College and dormitory setups are like this; condos; small single rooms.
As long as the console supports say browsing and MS office. You’re set. You have a full functional device that plays Xbox and has this browsing and office bits for work non gaming needs

Still don't see the business case for opening up xbox to play pc games.

I'm sure it will have edge on the next gen also which will be chromium based.
Mouse and keyboard support. So you could use it via the browser.

If people ended up buying the console for non gaming purposes because it would be a decent pc in its own right, ms would be making a pretty big loss. If they also play games but via steam and epic, still a loss.
Unless the hardware is sold with a reasonable profit it will be a loss. Reasonable profit would make it expensive for a console and a failure.

Not including having to deal with the fact that would need to support Vulkan etc
