Exporting AI files from Photoshop to 3ds Max

When creating paths in Photoshop and exporting to an illustrator file, there's no way to save it for version 8 so that I can import it into 3ds Max. I've created paths in illustrator and exported 2 version 8 but it seems every time I import it into 3ds Max and extrude, at extrudes the wrong way. Anybody know why?
 
I did this a lot at work, but 10 years ago. Initially i ended up putting the vector graphics in a character of a self made font to import it into Max, but later the workflow was draw in Photoshop, copy paste to Illustrator, export to old version and import as you say.
But i do not remember any problems with extruding or filling the outlines. What do you mean with 'the wrong way'? Maybe i can help if you describe it...
 
Oh, one more thin was this: IIRC, there was a rectangle added for the document borders on import, and it was necessary to remove this rectangle manually using some Edit Spline modifier.
