I just don't care one iota about how the Joker came to be. The Joker always worked for me as this primal force of evil because! his motivations and reasonings were never really explained. I don't wanna know whether the guy was bullied or had daddy issues. I really liked how Chris Nolan handled the Joker's past: a little bit of deliberately inconsistent pop-psychology right from the horse's mouth making it fairly clear that the Joker's past didn't bloody matter one bit. Some men just want to watch the world burn. The fact that the Joker just popped up and didn't come with your standard super villain background is what made him so unique and menacing.
The whole thing reminds me of Rob Zombi's Helloween remake which, despite all the extra bits of gore and the main actor's ridiculously imposing stature (Tyler Mane is almost 7 feet tall), only managed to deflate the character of Michael Meyers by settling him with a cliched mid-western abusive alcoholic for a dad and a stripper for a mom.
Another great example of a franchise that would have been way better off if it left things unexplained is Alien. So this grotesque space monstrosity is just the result of experiments conducted by an android with a god complex? Thanks, Ridley Scott.

I saw it last night. It was a solid horror flick. Not really exceptional IMO but the GF was clamped to my arm and hiding behind the seat and that's always fun.
It takes awhile to really pick up. The undead cat was nice. I'll take one lol. My cat will eat your cat. There were some great previews. Annabelle, Brightburn, etc. Gonna be a solid year for horror I think!

Looking forward to Brightburn. Funny story is that I already thought I went to see that movie. I had seen a trailer of it quite some time ago, then I noticed a movie called Prodigy came out. I didn't check it out further and assumed it's the same movie and went to see it. It was also horror genre and the kid in it pretty much looks the same as the one in Brightburn. The name Prodigy is pretty fitting as well haha. Figured it out pretty quickly that I'm watching something else, but I really liked that one as well
Not playing around. I already got my ticket in hand for the main event. Same theater and seat as last year and tomorrow sitting there as well to see Hellboy.

I saw Prodigy as well. I liked it. It had some twists, creepy ending, etc.

Honestly, seems like horror's kinda stuck in a softie phase to me. I remember going to a film festival some 10 years ago or so and seeing The Midnight Meat Train, Eden Lake and Martyrs all within a 2 days timespan. I think later that year The Ruins came out as well. I kinda miss those gnarly, unpretentious thrill rides that left you with a feeling of having been punched in the gut for an hour and a half. I'm not missing the whole torture porn stuff mind you, but horror used to be at least somewhat shocking.
Glad some of the more recent films, if only barely, at least warrant the R rating again.

That kind of stuff you'll never seen anywhere near mainstream cinema/tv. Eden Lake and Martyrs aren't movies that most people would appreciate, let alone be able to sit through, for separate reasons than something like Midnight Meat Train. All I consider some of the best horror around though.

Okay, maybe a little too messed up an example. That said, we did have Mirrors, The Ruins, The Hills have Eyes, Wolf Creek, The Devil's Rejects and more in theaters. Seems like ever since James Wan did the Conjuring (which I actually really like) horror has been nothing nut spooky ghosts/dolls and jump scares all day every day. This is actually kind of perplexing as the first Conjuring is completely devoid of the cheap tricks and jump scares its numerous imitators relied on so heavily.
Still gotta watch that Suspiria remake.
Yeah I have that to watch yet. I'm a fan of old Giallo, especially a bunch of Dario Argento movies of course. Not sure how well that style would translate to modern viewers though. Amazing soundtracks as well, hoping Suspiria remake will stick to that style.

It doesn't. Supposedly it takes the same basic narrative premise and goes somewhere entirely different with it. I'm cool with that. Imagine if John Carpenter had just given The Thing from 1951 a simple face lift. Would have been a shame considering the masterpiece we got. Anyways, there are so many weird aspects to Italian cinema of that era that a slavish remake would probably seem corny and not much else. Like the fact that every actor spoke in his or her native tongue and was dubbed in post later. Or that half the cast had the acting chops of porn actors because, well, that's what half of them were. Somehow all of it contributed to the weird, dream-like qualities of a film like Suspiria.
I'm dreading the 150 minutes runtime though. Bloody film is an hour longer than the original.

Watched Operation Overlord yesterday. It's a war drama / horror film set at the tail end of WW2. I thought it was a ton of fun and I urge everyone interested in seeing it to skip the trailers and everything else which might spoil the plot. I certainly wished I hadn't known what the film was really about. Nevertheless, great original movie with a wonderful cast of characters. Always nice when a horror film gets a decent budget and still doesn't have to pull any punches.
Finally got around to seeing Spider-man Into the Spider-verse. It's really well done, the art style is great. It fully deserved the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
Also got around to seeing Glass. Now, I still think that Unbreakable is probably the best origin superhero movie yet (and the reason superhero movies have made a comeback) and Glass builds on that and the predecessor Split. Great performances overall (especially James McAvoy) but ultimately pales in comparison to Unbreakable itself. Fun watch and lays the foundation for future superhero movies in the same universe.
Now, Replicas with Keanu Reeves. Ok, I can see the premise but it was sloppy in its execution and the CGI is, well, you should probably see it for yourself. I don't know if they were going for the original Terminator look or something (at least that was real stop motion). Many other similar movies / TV series does the theme more justice and flesh it out better.

So the Avengers Endgame reviews are much better than I expected. Going to see it tomorrow so staying away from social media and any kind of media until then, as it sounds like it’s going to be a spoilerific slaughter. Can not wait, I don’t know how long it’s been since I’ve been this excited about a movie.

Saw the Endgame this morning. I'd say it delivered. It builds up a little slow, but that didn't bother me. I don't think it wasted scenes at all, but some things didn't quite feel right and personally I would have liked one or two characters to have a little different arc in the final, but on overall they got it pretty much right. Out of the theater I thought Infinity war for me is the better out of the two, but this one definitely has its moments and it's growing on me as I think about it. It's a lot to take in. The last hour is a beast
