Slightly Mad announces Mad Box, the most powerful console ever created --standalone, VR-supportive

Ugh that subhor. The angles, the chrome trims. .

Looking at that Subor Z thing and my PS4 makes me hope the next-gen consoles are easier to dust.

Ps4 pro is already easy. As Sony made the top cover removable / pop off

BTT

He said they are in duscisskn with NV and AMD

Anyway looking at his tweet 0_0

He keeps saying no console can deliver 90 fps per eye or 120 fps per eye

But PSVR games, a tiny amount of them,, do run at native 90fps or native 120fps..

Has he yet mentioned a price for his 'console'?
Not yet.

But he has upped the target framerate from 60 fps native to 90 fps native.

So surely it will be way more expensive than ps4 pro as it won't only need much beefier gpu but also much beefier cpu.

I see no wrong information in the tweets mentioned in that article.

Looking at his twitter feed, it also looks like people are conflating two different things: he said he'd have 4K and VR in the Mad Box. That's not VR at 4K.
The 90 FPS native probably means they're planning to achieve 90 FPS VR with their own game (Project Cars 3?).

Those tweets are out-right clueless bollocks. 60 fps per eye is 60 fps stereoscopic VR. That's too low. 90 fps VR is two frames each update, or 180 fps if you want to stupidly call each a separate frame. He goes on to claim 60 fps per eye is smooth, pointing to TVs. You need 90 fps minimum to be smooth in VR, preferably lots faster, which is where the reprojection comes in - 120 individual display renders per second (60 fps, two eyes) reprojected to 240 individual display images per secon for 120 Hz VR.

Additionally, he says he's wanting to make the best VR box possible. Fair enough, but it's going to be very pricey. Why criticise the console companies for holding back the industry when they are targeting a broader audience than just 'the best VR possible'? The best VR possible now is going to be a $1000 GPU as a starting point (you really want two RTX 2080Tis, one for each eye...). Damn that console triopoly for making affordable machines. Bastards!

PSVR has really shone a light on VR - proper VR, none of that stupid cardboard box mobile phone rubbish. Next gen will be very interesting is Sony can release a decent wireless headset...it could really take off.

Who knows if this thing will actually happen but it seems that console hardware is more easily commoditized now. Supposedly Subor paid less than $100 mil for the design.

So will we get the EA console, Konami console, Capcom console, Activision console...?

EA has already finished the development and ready for deployment.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Although if he did succeed, it would actually helps PC VR as it will allow PCVR devs to target high quality VR and get good amount of market share..

Currently on PCVR, becoming the "crysis" of VR will be total disaster in market potential

There's no magic to this. They haven't found some way to push high framerate modern graphics any faster and cheaper than everyone else. So either it's going to end up an expensive niche item or a mass produced subsidized machine.

...
AFAIK
60 fps is not a show stopper with a real foveated display ( with continuous foveated region) .

I can see it now, UMADBRO Gaming Box catches fire and burns down California...
