AMD Polaris Rumors and Discussion

New product names, and better perf while competing against 1060. From a marketing/sales pov it makes sense, from an informed consumer pov not so much.

What's the point... 12nm cheaper now that 14/16nm ?

More competitive part for a similar or lower die cost (and low R&D for the move from 14nm), to compete in a segment that AMD won't have a successor part in for months or longer.

A 10~15% boost for little work must have made sense. It certainly makes the 1060 look like a questionable buy now.

AFAIK that "new" GTX 1060 uses defective GP104 cores and GDDR5X downclocked to 2200MHz (lower than the already existing "premium" GTX1060 with 2250MHz GDDR5).

It looks like a product aimed at draining the stock of GP104 and GDDR5X.

To compete with Polaris 30, nvidia is reportedly going to launch a GTX 2060 and GTX 2050 Ti at CES.

From any point of view, something that performs at 1.1x is better than something that performs at 1.0x.

If non-Turing, that's a horrible name.

I think AMD did a fairly decent job with the separate numbering of their Polaris & Vega SKUs.
(granted a minor point shadowed by their lack of competitiveness)

I think the argument would be that prolonging the very old GFX8 ISA isn't great, so they're not giving devs a larger userbase of GPUs with newer stuff like RPM, ROV and Conservative Rasterization which should increase performance in games.

Are we expecting RTX functionality in the 2060? If those features are already being put to question in the RTX 2070, then in a smaller GPU they'd make even less sense.
The lower-end 2000 series are probably just bringing Volta SMs and 12nm (or maybe 7nm?) to the public.

Regardless, the point here is that Polaris 30 isn't coming in a vacuum. A 36CU GPU at 1550MHz is definitely interesting, but I doubt it will be facing the 2.5-year-old GTX1060 for a long time. Eventually, AMD will have to bring the RX590's price down, to be able to compete with a more powerful nvidia 2000-series midrange.

A desktop version of Vega Mobility (assuming it's a GFX9 GPU in there) would have been a lot more interesting IMO. Though obviously more expensive, too.

No, at least not me.

A Volta port is almost a turing with respects to rasterization . Kudos to them if they are able to bring these new ported SKUs in the next months.

I meant horrible name in case these 2050/2060 will be tweaked Pascal cards (a la RX 590 -> 590 , for example)

That's not really written in your source. The RTX Lineup launches at CES, don't think this also accounts for the smaller 2060 and 2050Ti. According to the added roadmap this should be 2060Ti upwards, probably TU106 based. Smaller gpus should come later.

This gives AMD a really good opportunity with the RX590. They might dominate the 250-300$ segment in the next 6 months.

What? Totally not. Volta is very different in rasterization compared to Turing. It misses so many features. Only in Compute Volta is similar to Turing.

I do think, because wccftech doesn't really know what RTX means and why a 2060/2050 most probably doesn't belong in the RTX family.
They had been calling it RTX 2060/2050 in the very same article they redacted. For them, the 2000 series are all RTX.

The notebook roadmap they posted clearly indicates a different launch schedule, so everything beside that might be just Wccftechs interpretation and guessing. As i'm not really trusting wccftech, i'll stick with the roadmap, which puts 2060/2050 later, maybe at computex.

German Editor Confirms Radeon RX 590 as 12nm Polaris 30
By posting the two photos it is now confirmed that the Radeon RX 590 is a real thing, and you can read that it is a FinFET 12 aka 12nm fabricated product. The earlier leaked result has demonstrated the product (RX 590) to be clocked at ~1545 MHz clock. The suggested retail price would hover in the $299,- which is a good chunk more expensive than a RX 580 8GB at $229.

The respin GPU would be the 3rd iteration of Polaris, now noted as Polaris 30.

I can't help thinking those Polaris at >1500MHz will probably be bandwidth starved with 8GT/s memory.

About 24h before the official release, the 590X slides have just leaked:

https://www.hd-tecnologia.com/amd-presenta-la-radeon-rx-590-polaris-a-12nm-por-us-280/

- 12nm
- 36 CUs
- 1469MHz base
- 1545MHz boost
- 8 GT/s memory
- $280 suggested e-tail price (directly after the current price for the GTX1060).
- Bundled with Resident Evil 2 remake, Devil May Cry 5 and The Division 2.

And Powercolor opened up their custom RX590 page before the NDA:
