NPD September 2018

Pretty massive bump for PS4 from Spiderman. Be interesting to see the official release of NPD. I wouldn't be surprised if it's already on the Top 10 for the past 12 months, potentially pushing GOW 2018 off the list.

Where's the list for the past 12 months? I can only find the list for 2018 so far, where God of War is sitting 2nd as of NPD's August report. Considering it's 2nd in 2018, I don't expect GoW to get knocked off the list.

A lot of people at Era were predicting <400K, but I was pretty confident that it would be over. Curious how much SM sold.

PS4 should have another good month in October with the RDR2 bundle and the release of CoD. Then November and December should be big as usual. Sony is in good shape for the rest of the year.

First month XB1 is down YoY since XB1X I think. It had a good run of being up. It is up ~32% for the year. (edit: scratch that, XB1 is up YoY)
https://www.resetera.com/posts/13965185/
PS4: ~2708K (+9%)
NSW: ~2245K (-3%)
XB1: ~1868K (+32%)

PS4 is still up despite Pro shortages in the past 3-4 months.

https://venturebeat.com/2018/09/18/august-2018-npd-madden-nfl-has-its-best-kickoff-since-2013/

I didn't get a chance to look at Aug. last month. Looks like GOW 2018 moved up to #9 for past 12 months. So Spiderman may push off FIFA 18.

Top 10 best-selling games of the last 12 months
  1. Call of Duty: WWII
  2. NBA 2K18
  3. Destiny 2**
  4. Super Mario Odyssey*
  5. Far Cry 5
  6. Star Wars: Battlefront II**
  7. Madden NFL 18**
  8. Assassin’s Creed: Origins
  9. God of War
  10. FIFA 18**
The question then becomes if Spiderman makes it onto this list in its first month (a massive achievement for a single SKU product) then will it be ahead of or behind GOW 2018? Or possibly climb even higher?

So some interesting things from Sept. NPD.

https://venturebeat.com/2018/10/23/september-2018-npd/

“Dollar sales of console, portable and PC games software reached $747 million in September 2018, flat when compared to a year ago,” said Piscatella. “Year-to-date software spending is up 5 percent versus a year ago, to $3.9 billion.”

Spider-Man's massive sales basically took sales away from others. Destiny 2, last year's comparable big seller for Sept. was on 2 platforms.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man, the best-selling game of September, achieved the highest launch month dollar sales for any PlayStation exclusive in history, and is the seventh largest launch ever achieved by any game on any PlayStation platform,” said Piscatella.

Highest launch month ever for PS exclusive, but only 7th highest of any PS game. I wonder which 3rd party titles did better? GTA probably in there? COD?

“Marvel’s Spider-Man achieved launch month sales 37 percent higher than the combined launch month sales of all other Spider-Man games released since The NPD Group began tracking in 1995,” said Piscatella.

It absolutely put to shame all previous Spider-Man games...combined.

Kudos to Playground Games on their achievement with FH4 with the highest launch sales of any Forza game.

Filling out one more chart that didn't get posted.

Best selling games of the last 12 months
  1. Call of Duty: WWII**
  2. Super Mario Odyssey*
  3. Far Cry 5
  4. Star Wars: Battlefront II 2017**
  5. NBA 2K18
  6. Assassin’s Creed: Origins
  7. God of War 2018
  8. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  9. Monster Hunter: World
  10. NBA 2K19
God of War not only managed to stay on the chart, but it stayed ahead of Spider-Man 2 and moved up to number 7.

Needs repeating just how much of an accomplishment it is for Spider-Man to debut at number 8 on the rolling 12 month chart as a single SKU title.

Also worth noting that MH: W is on the rolling 12 month chart (wasn't on there last month) due to PC sales of the title boosting it's sales. It didn't chart in the top 10 of either XBO or PS4 for Sept.

PS4 back at the top uncontested in both unit sales and revenue.

But not a bad month for XBO either as it grew sales revenue by 30% YoY for Sept. and is up 60% YoY for 2018 so far.

And finally, to highlight the increased movement towards digital sales...

“Total spending on Accessories and Game Cards grew 43 percent in September 2018 when compared to a year ago, to an all-time high of $323 million,” said Piscatella. “Year to date, Accessories and Game Card spending has grown 35 percent when compared to a year ago, to $2.6 billion. This is also an all-time high, significantly exceeding the $1.9 billion generated in the 2017 year to date period.”

Enough that game card sales are now surpassing accessory sales.

People are also rushing with cash in their hands to get game currency cards at retail. And for the first time since NPD started tracking, game card spending has surpassed accessory spending in September and year-to-date.

Or to think of it another way a minimum of 1.3 billion USD was spent on console cash cards this year.

SB

By years end, those 2017 holiday sales numbers from November and December, that's currently factored in, will be a moot point for best-selling games over the last 12 months. By years end, more than likely Spider-Man will take 2nd place (as it is currently #3 for year), Far Cry 5 taking #3, GOW taking #4, and of course Red Dead Redemption 2 taking the #1 position.

I hope Activision executives are banging their heads against the wall in regret for how badly they mismanaged that IP.

I would say the road-to-recovery for Spider-Man began with the successful MCU films (i.e., Iron Man, Thor, Avengers, Spider-Man Homecoming, Black Panther, etc.) which Marvel cultivated for the last decade or so, energizing older and newer Marvel fans into wanting these games. That's not to take away from Sony's wonderful marketing or Insomniac's talented developers, but Spider-Man fans would have purchased this game regardless of platform or developer (as long as the game was good, and had some relevance or connection to the current Marvel Cinematic Universe).

Crazy Spiderman is between God of War launch month(1,9 millions) and Halo 3 launch month(3,3 millions) but the sales numbers are closer to Halo 3 number than God of War number it means more than 2,6 millions Spiderman

* Far Cry 5 sold 5 million copies worldwide in seven days (see below), and is ranked #1 in the Year to Date sales for the U.S..
* God of War sold 5 million copies worldwide during it's first month (see below), and is ranked #2 in the Year to Date sales for the U.S..
* Spider-Man sold 3.3 million copies worldwide in three days (see below), and is ranked #3 in the Year to Date sales for the U.S..
* Monster Hunter World has sold 10 million copies (8 million on the PS4 alone) worldwide as of August 20, since it's launch in January (see below).
* Spider-Man (#3) has already eclipsed Monster Hunter (#4) in the U.S. Year to Date sales, per September's NPD info.

Although the NPD group doesn't cover worldwide sales (only U.S. sales), I'm betting Spider-Man's worldwide sales numbers are well beyond PS4's Monster Hunter World worldwide sales of 8 million. I'm thinking 9 million for Spidey at this point...

Far Cry 5 apparently managed to sell 5 million copies in its first week

USA Today reports that Sony sold 3.3 million copies of Marvel's Spider-Man within the first three days of release, setting a new sales record. That edges out the prior record of 3.1 million in the first three days set by God of War earlier this year. Pre-orders were a record-setter as well, at one million copies. This figure doesn't account for sales of the PlayStation 4 Pro bundle that included a specially painted console and a copy of the game.
