Star Wars Discussion Thread (Movies, Books, Plotholes, etc)

I'm dreading seeing it. I despised TFA and Disney doesn't need even more money to buy everything and ruin it more.

Thought on Snoke.
Why didn't his seemingly-dead body turn into energy? Hmmmmmmmmm. Curious!

'Last Jedi' Grosses Are Collapsing With The Worst Daily Holds Of All 9 Star Wars Movies

After opening at nearly 90 percent of The Force Awakens' strength, The Last Jedi has steadily fallen behind, and by Wednesday, its 6th full day in release, it was holding its audience at a lesser rate than every one of the previous eight live action Star Wars movies. It had retained just 16 percent of its opening day gross, a figure that, as the chart below shows, is well below the holds for The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and the last of the prequels, Revenge of the Sith.

The Last Jedi is the rock-bottom, worst-holding movie of the entire 9-film franchise. Even Attack of the Clones looks like a champ in comparison.

Interesting. Most people I talk to think it's amazing and wonderful and all that. Maybe it's not exciting enough to get repeat views. I know I don't desire to ever see it again. ;)

Seen TLJ myself tonight. I really liked it. Probably more than TFA. Don't understand the criticism. Can't wait for more. Will be interesting to see how they end this last trilogy.

As a stand alone film, I think it's great, but hen you consider it's the middle part of a trilogy
and completely ignores pretty much everything set up in the previous film
I do not rate it as part of the saga.
I get that he wanted to make it like Empire, with the resistance taking a beating and someone getting Jedi training, but a simple reimagining of the story that follows the script like TFA would've been better.

The dark side do not ascend, they are trying to use the force to live forever, so not having a body sticking around would be counter productive.

There are to many points you are expected to believe the first order are actually idiots.

Exhbit a:
Calling back all the tie fighters, despite there not being a single resistance fighter out of the hangers, no no, don't destroy it unopposed, lets follow it for a few days occasional firing a single cannon at it's shields. I think it's obvious Rian Johnsons heart wasn't in this film, as all his stupid ideas, he felt he needed to add dialogue to explain why it was happening. thank god he's not longer doing anything with episode 9.

So yoda as a ghost can effect the real world, and his walking stick can also hit people in the face??? WTF!! Surely this would make a mockery of the force ghosts that just turn up after the fight is won, why is luke not contacting Obi Wan and asking him why the fuck he didn't help him after he died.

But the absolute worst thing is we are expected to believe Rey is a nobody, that is insanely powerful in the force, with no training. Even Anakin needed years of training, Rey has 3 lessons in mumbo jumbo and she can lift tonnes of rocks without breaking a sweat. We assume Luke was on Degobah with Yoda for weeks, and yet he couldn't lift his x-wing out of the water? Fair enough it is possible for someone to be strong in the force, but Rey is skilled, there has got to be some link somewhere. I mean she out jedi mind trick Ren in the first movie when she had only just felt it was possible. How did she know what to do?

Pretty sure JJ is going to correct a lot of the misteps in the first half an hour of the next film.

Johnson went overboard with playing with emotions, and forgot to continue the story in my opinion, it's the longest star wars film ever, but the story could've been told in a fraction of the time.

As a stand alone film, like Rogue One, this would be a solid 8 or 9 out of 10 for me, I am struglling to find what I would give it as part of a trilogy though. Maybe after the second watch in an imax cinema I will know what I feel about it.

Anyway, I'm clearly just ranting now though my disappointment, so will leave it there. There are of course many other things that just don't add up or pee me off about the film ;)

I haven't actually seen the movie yet, but I'm hoping to, this weekend maybe if it's not sold out. (I won't bother if there's an edge seat available up front or way off in the back...)

What I think is important is that it's not enough to simply have a good script, the people making the movie have to understand what Star Wars is, its history, the tone and the 'feel' of the universe; the delicate balance between seriousness, action and humor. Lucas himself didn't always get this right, with the special editions and the prequels. Thinking that Star Wars is some kind of a rubberstamp that's going to print Disney shitloads of money is just going to fuck up one of the most revered stories of all time.

One has to do it right, or not bother at all.

I'm not really a big JJ fan either. :)

I'd like to see Ridley Scott put together a Star Wars movie of some sort. I liked both Alien and Blade Runner this year. Pretty solid scifi stories told there. But those are his own universes and I can't imagine it would be fun to deal with Star Wars corporate politics.

Apparently Quentin Tarantino and JJ are doing an R rated Star Trek. Yeah that should be curious.

Yes but Palpatine went up like a crazy electrical storm explosion. Thankfully contained by a bottomless pit.;)

Well, that's a few hours of my life I'll never get back. I thought TFA was pretty poor and fooled myself into thinking this new film would be better without Abrams at the helm but, by heck, was I wrong.

It was so bad that I'm thinking back fondly to Lucas awful prequel trilogy.

It was just a lot of stupid, pointless scenes, barely linked by the flimsiest of plots. Terrible, clunky dialogue and I've actually been left almost angry with how bad the film was.

When the fan theories about plot holes turn out to be ten times better than the actual movie itself, you know you've got a problem.

Good God, that was bad.

Yesterday night I saw SW: TLJ.

I liked it a lot! Yes, some questions were not answered... or were poorly answered/not to the satisfaction of the audience, but overall it was good and it had some awesome moments, too (Leia!!!).

BTW, didn't Yoda seem a bit... odd? Like a real-life puppet, similar to the first trilogy. It didn't feel like a CGI character, rather than a real puppet a la old style. Quite weird, really!! o_O

That’s because things that look like puppets in the movie, are puppets or made to look like them :) to preserve that old school feel, apparently.

But it's the first time they make it this way... in the prequel trilogy it wasn't like this. It's weird. :-S

Nah, it´s made on purpose.

Like the Luke reference to The Force

The producers, writers, directors, etc pretty much override the prequels... and to me that´s a good thing

Not exactly.

He was a puppet in Episodes 1, 5, 6 & 8. He was digital in Episodes 2 & 3.

Well, of course it was a puppet in episodes V and VI. I was referring to the newer movies... so, I didn't remember it was a puppet in episodes I and VIII. :-S

Saw TLJ last night. In the theatre I thought it was great, pretty well paced, good action, a bit more gritty than the previous one, and I had a very enjoyable experience.

But I'm still left unsatisfied because
The whole " lets go and turn off the tracker / we need to go to another place to get a master burglar / hey nice casino with loads of unusual 'aliens'/ nice riding big dinosaur thingies/" that lasted maybe 30 mins was ultimately a complete and total failure and entirely pointless. Did Finn actually do anything of value in this film, except at one time try to run away....again. If Lorna Dern's character simply tell's Po her plan, everything is sorted. Why didn't she tell him, doesn't she trust him ???

The master burglar that they got turned out to be little more than a reimagined Lando Calrissian, except he didn't redeem himself. Perhaps he redeems in the next film. But i don't want to wait 12 months for a redeeming character. The film needs to give satisifaction in it's own right, and not only when seen as part of a trilogy.

Snoke, who in my mind (and I have very little knowledge of SW canon), was supposed to be pretty freakin' powerful, whilst in the middle of a long monolgue that said he could see every single thought of Kylo's, couldn't see him thinking about cutting him in half ?

We are still none the wiser as to why Rey is the single most natural user of the force/ light sabre that has existed in ANY of the films.

The movie at least once, and maybe more, shifted from a scene showing luke and leia communicating from afar, to Rey and Kylo doing the same. Given that in the previous films, only Luke and Leia could do this, and it was suggested it was because there was a special link (siblings), it leaves a thought that there is a special link between Rey and Kylo. But then Snoke says he was doing it all along ? So set up a possible great reflection of a previous scenario, and then kill it stone dead...or maybe not ?

There was great potential in Kylo redeeming himself, as seemed to be the case, but in another fashion, whilst keeping Snoke alive and allowing a tie-up between him and Rey for film 3. But I guess that would be too much like Vader redeeming himself, so they decided that he'd apparenly redeem for about 30 secs and then switch again...it wasn't a satisfying segment. They could have kept him as a "good" Kylo for a lot longer, before him turning again.

The movie did not explain or pre-cursor why Luke decided to bugger off and die.

Is it possible that Rey is indeed Luke's daughter (as was joked about upthread), and this is why Rey and Kylo can communicate, they are each a sibling of Luke / Leia, and also both decendants of Anakin ?

would also explain her force ability (although not her uncanny immediate mastery of it)

...later a quick google shows I'm kinda late to this conjecture :)
