Minecraft, Rocket League, Fortnite, etc CrossPlay on every Platform but Sony because...

More honest how? It's not like MS has asserted that Sony wants unfavorable conditions or basically being a douche about the situation.

They are trying to get Sony to commit their player base, which is the largest of the console makers, to join a MS bought game ecosystem which controls DLC, network communications, etc. It's a win-win for MS, they either get what they want, Sony players and potential money or bad press for Sony. Sony had nothing to gain or lose until it became a public console war battle and Sony was left with obfuscation or honesty and neither is going to satisfy their player base now. So they will be forced to back pedal and give in to MS, which is bad press for them and good press for MS, which was likely the goal for MS.

I feel like everyone focusing on the Sony vs MS MineCraft angle is only trying to convollute the situation and avoid the real issue. That would be Sony is still preventing Cross-Platform Play with two titles of Gwent and Rocket League, neither of which are Microsoft owned or controlled.

Simple answer: It's a business strategy.

Longer answer: Sony has it own business strategies (keeping/growing revenue streams, staying ahead of the competition, etc..) that are aligned with it's organizational plans, needs and investors.

As Gamers (consumers): Hitting them in the pockets by not supporting their products and/or services. Pretty simple to me.

How is this nonsense any different than requiring an Ea account to play online EA Games in consoles??
Is Minecraft a Ms game? the persistent stuff uses Ms servers? Whatever social online aspect of Ms is called Xbox live?
never mind
Sony doesn't have to worry about EA sending targeted Xbox ads to their users every week because they are a development partner and not a direct platform competitor.

I was working 10 years ago for a telecom carrier and they had a problem with customer data theft sold to a concurrent it was hurtful for them...

It is not a question of billing, you need to give some information to create your Xbox Live account, probably the same information than customer give for the PSN and Sony want to keep this information for them and this is simply logic and how works every company... It is not only in videogame company it could have been pepsi and coca cola or Apple and Google...

Absolutely incorrect.

This will likely be done though an encrypted numeric user ID hash, similar to any number of systems that exist that allow for cross platform sharing of information without sharing of customer information.

Some examples,
  • Eve online has APIs available to allow any programmer to access user game information. No billing or personal user information is shared. No account information is shared. Only game state and game related information.
  • Steam has APIs that allow third party developers to associate game data with a Steam ID. No billing or personal user information is shared. No account information is shared. Only a unique numeric ID hash. NOTHING ELSE.
    • Additionally a user account is automatically created based on the unique customer ID if one is needed. No personal account information is provided to 3rd parties in order to accomplish this. The user is not required to create an account or submit personal information to accomplish this. Personalized user accounts are optional, but not required.
  • World of Warcraft has APIs available to allow anyone to access user game data. No billing or personal user information is shared. No account information is shared.
  • Final Fantasy XIV uses PSN for login on the PlayStation version of the game. Sony shares no billing or personal user information. No account information is shared. Square Enix must collect that information directly from the user (billing information, payment details, everything). Similarly Square Enix shares no personal information with Sony.
The list goes on and on and on.

What you claim has no basis in reality. Nintendo aren't getting any user information from Microsoft. Microsoft aren't getting any information from Nintendo. Unless you consider an encrypted unique user ID hash as personal information in some weird way.

In the cases where Sony handles all chat in PC<>PS cross play, do the PC players need a PSN account?

Unsure about most of Sony's games. But for FFXIV, no. All in game cross platform chat is handled by Square-Enix. Other than using PSN for login, nothing is shared between Sony and Square-Enix.

You need to create a Xbox Live account if you don't have one and don't have a Xbox console and you are now inside the Xbox ecosystem...

Ask any marketing guy what they can do with a name, address and email knowing they play videogame...

Sony don't want PSN customer to create an Xbox account..

And they don't want to do cross play because it downplay the advantage to be the leader. They don't want cross play with Xbox because Sony and Microsoft fight for the same customer in the console market.

I couldnt care less about the responsibility that Sony has to its shareholders or its plans for world domination. I play games and I would very much want to play cross platform with friends online, that's about it.

Will Sony lose anything by not support cross platform play for Minecraft and Rocket league? Its cool that MS and Nintendo are doing it, but how important is it to MS and Nintendo, outside bullet points on a press release and how negligible is it for Sony?

If it affects PS4/PS4 Pro sales they will do it.

For Microsoft and Nintendo the consumer are different and the install base is not huge like Sony.

Is cross play huge for PS4 gamers and future PS4 gamers? If yes it will affect sales if not Sony will keep the same position...

Let sony do what they want to do. I already have some friends that are looking at the xbox for cross play because of the play anywhere . I am sure the more games that are xbox / pc / switch the more will want to move to MS to expand their playing pool.

As I mention there is absolutely Zero need for a PSN user to create an XB-Live account. There would be a unique encrypted user ID hash. No account information would be shared. No personal information would be shared.

The sole purpose of that encrypted user ID hash would be to determine what the user's gamestate is (DLC unlocked, etc.)

So, for example.
  • PSN user has Minecraft and wants to do cross platform play.
  • PSN passes a unique encrypted user ID hash to XB-Live to represent that player.
  • User purchase DLC on PSN. PSN passes on to XB-Live that this user ID now owns said DLC.
  • User uses PSN to log into the game despite all data residing on XB-Live servers.
    • This is how FFXIV works BTW. Except obviously not XB-Live servers, but Square-Enix servers.
  • At no point does the user have to create an XB-Live account. At no point does PSN pass on user account information to XB-Live.
  • For player convenience however, a user might be asked to input a name that other players can see them as. Or, PSN could provide the person's PSN name associated with the user ID hash.
There's a variety of permutations of this that accomplish the same goals without the sharing of user information or the user having to create another account.

It happens all the time on Steam. There are many games which operate on 3rd party servers but which do NOT require a user to create a 3rd party account. Steam passes on an encrypted user ID hash for the 3rd party server in order for that server to properly track what that user owns. User only ever logs into Steam and doesn't ever explicitly log onto the 3rd party server or create an account on the 3rd party server.

Rockstar games wants to enable cross-platform play between Xbox users and PlayStation users.

https://gamerant.com/red-dead-redemption-2-cross-play/

I'm going to guess MS will have no problems approving it. There is much doubt that Sony will approve.

Rockstar has a lot more clout than any previous game developer wanting to enable cross platform play between Xbox and Playstation, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Sony won't be able to use the excuse about protecting the children though considering their games are usually Mature rated. :p

can you play gta on pc and xbox cross play ?

can you play gta on pc and xbox cross play ?

I have no idea. All the streamers basically use the PC version because they use dedicated private servers. Many use servers with white lists for the players. That's important to avoid stream sniping or situations where a popular streamer's audience tries to get on the server thus preventing streamers from being able to get on the server.

These are RP servers, BTW. So, for example if someone wants to be a Policeman, they have to submit an application then go through some training.

This not me who speak about Xbox Live account read the Phil Spencer interview saying cross play needs Xbox live account.

If it was the main problem Sony would accept Rocket league cross play, console are closed ecosystem. Sony want to benefit of network effect because they are the leader and for this they need multiplayer games to play in a closed PS4 ecosystem...

Yes, obviously. But as I keep mentioning it can be automatically created without user input or user data other than a unique user ID hash. Something must exist on the server to represent that person and keep track of what that person owns and has access to, but it doesn't have to be a user created account. Once that happens, PSN just has to notify the external network (in this case XB-Live) whenever that user ID has purchased content so that it can be enabled for that person.

In other words the exact same unique user ID hash that Sony gives to any game that only uses PSN for login, like FFXIV for example.

The PSN user would not need to create an XB-Live account.

Rockstar and TakeTwo have other, more pressing concerns right now.

And the timing for this article seems... peculiar.

You might want to dig a little deeper.

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-40329399

These were malicious mods or in the case of Open IV a legit mod that allowed some users to maliciously exploit the system that were actually harming other players in GTA 5. What else were they to do? Just sit there and let people use these mods to F-over other players?
