Playstation sales question

Hi guys, I would be really grateful if somebody could answer these questions, and maybe even provide a link to the numbers.

1: How many Playstations and PS2s have Sony sold worldwide?

2: How many games (worldwide)?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Original Playstations are somewhere over 90 million, as I remember, between all its iterations. 95-ish at this point, maybe?

Seriously? Didn't think they were selling at high rates. I know they were around 90 million mid-2002, and though they did sell 600k over the holidays in North America, I didn't think their rates were anywhere near that otherwise, no matter what the territory. (Only 61k PSOne's sold in all of 2003 in Japan, for instance.)

I THOUGHT I saw a breakdown somewhere recently, though... I'll try to find it again.

IIRC PS1 crossed 100 million some time back, can't remember where I saw that article.

Don't have the link to the article, but it did state about 120Mil world wide, and this was over a year ago.

Either way, its a sucess no matter how you look at it. PS2 looks like its heading in the same direct.

is PS1 still selling in significant numbers? is it even still produced?
Several hundred thousand units over the last xmas period, and yes it will be produced until the day PS3 comes out, since Sony are only willing to support 2 console generations at one time. Or that's what i read somewhere.

Yeah, PS1 (well, PSOne) is still being made and sold. In Japan it quite often outsells XBox, and at worst is only about 50% behind...

Yeah but at least the Xbox is going strong in australia

(Ok sorry, couldn't resist, won't do it again....)

Anyway, the whole Playstation brand must have some people-magnet-brand-recognition, as discussed in other threads, it's amazing who many units Sony has sold and is still selling. I wonder if the trend will continue with PSP, considering the unforgivingly high price. I'm sure PS3 will have it easy, even in case it does not become the market leader (unlikely at this point, but anything can happen)

Nice find! That's a damn cool reference link. ^_^

So pretty much 100 mil. Didn't think it was that much higher... I'm satisfied with my 95 million guess. Hehe...

Looks like PS1 is still not quite over the 100M mark, but it looks well on its way to pass it in 2004.

Just realized something funny though...
Cumulative shipments of PSOne model alone, are roughly double of either XBox or GCN to date...

Or more interestingly, in the time period since actual XBox/GCN launch, PSOne is only around ~0.5M units behind.
Sept 2001 - June 2003 : Japan 1.29M USA 4.01M Europe 3.68M - 8.98M
XBox June 2003 shipment - 9.4M...

At that rate it seems possible PSOne will actually stay ahead in total units until PS3 launches. 8)

Considering the missing last quarter and the usual holiday sales surge, I assume it's gotten to if not over 100M--and if not it'd be so close as to hardly matter.

Cheap machines with bajillions of game options out there tend to remain popular for a while. Hehe... Certainly no matter what Nintendo does to upgrade the GameBoy again, their current sales will cruise along for quite some time. (And they both make great "cheap, kid gifts.")

0.5 million behind XBox yes, but more like 4 million behind GC. Still pretty incredible for such an old system though.
