AMD Marketing Tactics *spin*

Is demo-ing your new ryzen cpu at ces 2017 using a geforce gpu also a pr success :D
It is, actually. AMD can't and won't fight the fact that NVIDIA has the fastest (consumer) GPU out there at the moment, so by using it they can shine brighter spotlight on how good their CPU is.
It sits perfectly with the informed people, and well with the rest

It shows that they are being realistic and not dogmatic. It makes their PR material that much more believable if they are willing to who all machines in their best light. Even if that means using a competitor's hardware (GPU in this case).

Would be a different matter if AMD GPUs were still competitive in the high end (IE - 7970 vs GTX 680 was close enough that you just use your own hardware).

Certainly doesn't highlight their GPU business currently, but the focus is firmly on showing that their CPUs will be competitive.

Imagine the PR nightmare if they'd used an Rx480 instead, or even worse a Fury X (not even current generation).

At every show they've used at least Titan X's, even if there has been furys, vega prototypes and polaris (cfs)
They've actually mostly only used Fury X's during the Battlefield 1 press tours & marketing campaign even though Polaris was already out for a few months...AMD simply don't give a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I guess..

Nope, BF1 has been Titan X in most if not all Ryzen showings, same with Star Wars Battlefront, Doom etc. Yes, there has been Vega in some (at least Doom & Star Wars) but at every event they've had Titan X's

The Sniper Elite 4 demo at their event was on dual RX480's.

I was not talking about Ryzen at all here. Just that AMD doesn't care about using it's latest GPUs during press tours/marketing. Most/all of the Battlefield 1 demo units during the games launch/press events where Fury X powered even though AMD was all about Polaris/RX480 at that time.

Well sure, when they are marketing their GPUs, it's hard to market your GPUs if you don't even have your GPU in the machine. When Fury X launched it was competitive with the 980ti as well. Generally slower but still competitive

The current discussion thread was about their use of NVidia GPUs to showcase their CPUs, however. AMD currently doesn't have a shipping GPU that is even remotely competitive with NVidia's GPU at the high end. Hence, they'd be the laughing stock of the PR world if they'd attempted to highlight the performance of Ryzen by using their own GPUs.
