AMD Polaris Rumors and Discussion

They sell like hot cakes. There is a lot of nerd rage but it ends up being uncorrelated to sales. We can very easily go read a 100 or a 1000 posts and comments that say "I've been stuck with 16GB RAM for five years!", "This is a Macbook Air not Pro", "that's it, I'm fed up, going to Windows 10/Linux/something" but a million other people don't care, don't know or eat it up.

It might be the filtering bubble effect, it might be Apple caring about sales figures and not caring about alienating users - perhaps more people only use it for writing blogs than people will leave due to weak thermals, inability to add internal storage or other blocking issues. Other people will edit pictures or video but don't care as they outsourced the technical choices to Apple.

Most people that buy Apple, only buy for the software, most of them don't know shit about hardware. Just ask an Iphone user what they think about their SOC, and you will get a funny look lol.

Latency would be the larger concern and bandwidth does play into that. Just look at network pings when already downloading something. Barring some QOS they're generally not good. It will show in minimum FPS and stutters. That's what was demoed with the SSG, where PCIE had more bandwidth, but the local drive could still respond more quickly than interrupting the CPU.

Can't the exact same thing be said about any other phone user? Or computer user? No one in my office knows what they have under the hood. It's simply irrelevant unless it doesn't work. In that case it is SEP (Someone else's problem).

For the most part, but that also extends to apple computer buyers too. There is absolutely no reason to buy an apple product when now its just cheaper to get similar quality products from the pc market, unless there is a need for apple software.

HP, Dell, not sure of Lenovo, and others have similar speced products at lower cost or better speced products at same cost all with the same quality of build.

This is exactly why Apple has been loosing marketshare for quite some time, because they failed to innovate their products, outside of their recent launch of the OLD touch bar on their new mac pro laptop, they haven't been doing too much.

Perhaps such a discussion should be taken elsewhere, as not to clutter this thread needlessly.

prices of polaris VGAs dropped a lot. you can get 470 used for 150(same as 1050 new) and even 480 8GB used under 200.

They go for even less on periodic deals.

Slickdeals has had several $130-140 new 470s show up, sometimes with the Hitman bundle.

And 4GB 480s have gone as low as $140-155 after rebate in recent weeks.

I've even seen a 460 for $70 after rebate.

It makes me wonder if they are clearing stock for a Vega-led 500 series (with Polaris rebrands underneath).

Vega range won't cover all of Polaris range

When I said, "Vega-led 500 series (with Polaris rebrands underneath)," I meant that Vega 10 would be at the helm in a Fury part or 590 part (or hell, maybe both) and then we'd see a 580, 570, 560 and so on that wound be based on Polaris (probably with increased clocks and what not).

There's still Polaris 12 that hasn't even released. Which would seem to be an Apple/Intel destined part that hasn't even hit the market.

RX 550, 570 and 580 started being listed in some stores. Looks like they'll be available next week:

Pricing is pretty much terrible across the board. These are euroland prices and we've been ripped off on graphics cards ever since the first 16FF GPUs started coming out, but these prices are a lot higher than what we have right now with the RX 400 series.

RX 570 4GB starts at 220€ (~$235) and RX580 goes from 280€/$300 at 4GB all the way to 363€/$387 in the 8GB Nitro+ version. The MSI 580 Gaming X even goes as far as 500€ in another store.

Maybe these are just placeholder prices (those usually have rounder numbers, though), or maybe it's just opportunism to make easy money before the MSRP is announced.
But if the price is right and the cards are based on the same Polaris 10 chip, then they'd better be clocked soaring high because this is well past GTX1060 territory and well into the GTX1070 price range.

For crap's sake, I just purchased a refurbished reference RX480 8GB for $170 + $10 shipping at the Visiontek website.
In the US, sales are putting many new RX480 8GB with non-reference coolers at just below or above $200 if you do mail-in rebates.

Someone posted this in VC's comment section, a 580 overclocked well enough for a firestrike run.

VC author says that it scored 6880 graphics score in Firestrike Extreme at 1.5Ghz, which is about Fury level, about 10% behind Fury X.

The driver status is not approved by the Foreign Minister?

A bit more seriously, I wonder about that RX550. I know it "only" has three display outputs but that's workable, also the crashing prices of HDMI-to-VGA and DP-to-VGA adapters is a good thing for low end users although a small pain in the bottom (need to order them on some separate web site(s))

Full lineup of RX550, RX570 and RX580 from Gigabyte pictured:

The "Gaming" RX580 looks like a copy/paste of Gigabyte's current RX 480 G1.
Sure looks like a simple Bios update will turn (at least the more recently manufactured) RX480 into a RX580.

Same cooler, and they will not change anything outside the color on it .... i let you flash a bios on a gpu based on that hé hé.

More seriously, if the only change is on process and reduced leak, basically the core will not change much.

No idea what the cooler looks like underneath, but the shroud is different to the 480 G1. Lets hope it's an improvement as the 480 g1's run hot.
