Summary as follows (from reddit):-
  • Verstappen adamant he had merely defended his position hard
  • Räikkönen called Verstappen's maneuvers during the race "questionable"
  • Ferrari believed Verstappen had changed direction twice while defending and contacted Charlie Whiting
  • Whiting contacted the Stewards during and again after the race to look at the incidents
  • both times they saw no reason to investigate
  • this could have been influenced by the opinion of Alan Jones (one of the Stewards that race), who's known as a hard fighter on track
  • 2 hours after the race they looked at the incidents again after Räikkönen had complained publicly
  • in laps 57 and 67 Verstappen demonstrably changed direction twice while fighting Räikkönen
  • the first changes of direction were interpreted as bringing the car in the perfect position for the corner, and only the second changes of direction were interpreted as defensive moves
  • Räikkönen's criticism is mainly about the timing of Verstappen's moves
  • he says Verstappen didn't leave him with time to react, which first resulted in his front wing being damaged and later forced him to run wide in turn 1
  • Whiting most interested in Räikkönen's second attack at turn 1
  • Verstappen moved his car left onto the ideal line 125m before the corner
  • Räikkönen then moved to the inside and Verstappen did the same 75m before the corner already in the braking zone
  • Räikkönen had to take avoiding action and moved to the left again
  • there is an unwritten law against changing lanes during braking, because it leaves the car behind with hardly any time to react
  • Whiting wants to talk to Räikkönen again in Hockenheim to get his point of view, although it's now too late to punish Verstappen

I personally felt that Max didnt do anything egregious on the second incident into Turn 1. But the first incident was pretty damning IMHO..he clearly moved twice..and it was not to take the optimum line into the corner.

Martin Brundle also said he thought the moves were dangerous.

....aaand no more radio rule, except for warm-up lap 'till start. and no more penalizing for going past track limits.

They should have ditched radios altogether, they did fine with the boards at pitwall before, they could do it now. If the drivers can't handle all the settings, your system is too complicated, simplify it.

And for track limits, it would be fine you could go over the limits if there would be sand traps all around the track, now with the huge asphalt areas it just means the definiton of "track" doesn't exist anymore, if you can find a shortcut, use it.

edit: Maybe they could introduce power-ups to the shortcuts?
 
Seriously someone threw the toys out of the pram by going completely 180 on the radio ban.

Yeah pretty retarded move. The ban on radio messages regarding car problems/settings didn't make sense but I was happy drivers weren't told how to drive the cars anymore. It was very lame to hear an engineer tell a drive how to take a corner or when and where to deploy KERS.

At least they delayed the halo. Hopefully with another year of no big accidents they can dump the concept of cockpit protection all together. F1 should be open wheel and open cockpit. If you think that is too dangerous there are plenty of other series to compete in. Don't hear MotoGP talk about putting a protective bubble around riders.

Sucks I'll be watching ballet instead of F1 this weekend. Though with all the recent whining F1 might not be that far off from ballet these days ;P
 
Rosberg did a great job getting pole and Hamilton made a mistake on the last lap. Ricciardo got third and were closer to the mercs than everyone thought.

Lets see if Rosberg can win the race and stem the tide of Hamilton's fantastic run of form.
 
You just gotta love Räikkönen, semi-freely translated from one of the news "headlines" in finnish F1-media: "Vettel gives harsh grade for first part of season - Räikkönen doesn't give a flying f#ck"
(related to italian media asking them about first part of the season, Vettel gave himself and the team 5 out of 10, Räikkönen didn't give anything)

It's 33/33/33
- Rosberg went too deep which gave Verstappen only chance to go out or slow almost to halt
- Same move has been done and gone unpunished million times by others
- Verstappen moved during braking which partly forced Rosberg going too deep (changing lane during braking isn't allowed, or at least it's frowned upon)

Yea Max again moved pretty late during braking..some day its gonna result in an ugly incident. I agree that the same thing has been done by countless drivers (especially Hamilton throughout his career). I'd say the only reason Rosberg was penalised was because he pretty much did it mid corner and not on corner exit like Hamilton does. Also..for whatever reason..Rosberg seemed to be stopped for a lot longer than 5 seconds at the box before the team changed the tyres (TV showed 12 seconds stationary..should have been more like 8)
 
Someone forgot to start the stopwatch.. Oh dear Mercedes.

Good battles and some decent racing midfield. Points gap +19 to Hamilton.

No, you're getting confused between squeezing drivers on the exit of the corner while on the racing line and just neglecting to turn on the entry to a corner. Again. For the second time in a month. The "millions of times" that others didn't get punished for it is actually one time, when Rosberg did it to Hamilton, when he did get punished for it.

Nope, he couldn't but Danny Ric got second place. Gutted for Alonso who had to save fuel at the end and lost a points-paying position.

Honda is improving, but it I wish they and McLaren could improve faster. It hurts soooo much when they can't fight because their engine drinks fuel.

Being on racing line doesn't give you the right to push someone out, and yes, it's been "million" times, it's been done to Rosberg too, without penalties. And again, you're not allowed to change lines mid-braking like Verstappen did, which forced Nico to change line and his entry, too.

It would be fun to see Hamilton & Verstappen being in similar incidents against each other, how do you punish anyone when both have immunity on penalties and different set of rules compared to rest of the field?
 
Again, you fail to grasp the point being made due to your blinkers.

Rosberg, unlike every other incident you are referring to, did not push someone wide at the exit of the corner, he pushed them wide before the apex, before he even turned into the corner. It's the 'oh shit I've broken far too later to make the corner so I'll block you' move. As cjo said, it's only happened twice in recent memory, both by Nico.

Please indicate any other move of this type done by anyone else, or shut up.

As for the penalty, I feel it was harsh, but his BS on the radio yet again probably sealed his fate.
