Pharma, thanks for the EVGA model chart.

The "Founders Edition" is clearly ranked lowest and least desirable in every category, which pretty much tells us what the new Founder's Edition marque really means.

Titan x vs gtx 1080
transistors 8bilion vs 7.2bilion (1.11x)
sp 3072 vs 2560 (1.2x)
rop 96 vs 64 (1.5x)
tmu 192 vs 160 (1.2x)
l2 cache 3mb vs 2mb (1.5x)

And my question is, what nvidia did with transistors in pascal because titan x which have only 1.11x more transitors have much more rops, cache, sp, tmu. Did they somehow use large quantity of transistors to increase clock speed ?
I am not saying this covers for all the "missing transistors", but what's costing, is:
- More functionality in vertex handling (probably minor in terms of t.)
- New Display- and Video-Engines
- GDDR5X PHYs which in contrast to the memory itself have to route data at a higher rate, so probably are larger

    • improved delta colour compression
    • improved scheduling
Plus, Nvidia talked about optimizing the critical paths at length. I can only guess (and this has been done probably mostly in the simulator), but you could invest a couple of transistors there as well, I guess. As much as in the power department (talking about separate voltage islands inside the chip and much more clock gating). They, after all, will need to balance more available transistors with power and speed. If you just had shrunk Maxwell GM200 and crammed everything inside that smaller die, I guess you'd have run into power density issues.

VideoCardz had an interesting screen capture of what may had been a mistake by Zotac showing their software using 1080ti.
Quick glance it could be assumed they photo-shopped the ti onto a 1080...
But check out the GPU clock, trend is that the xti usually clocks lower than the x80 model, especially with Maxwell, note memory clock seems about right for a Pascal GDDR5X type card- possibly an early ES as GPU clock is a bit too low for base but still marginally higher than P100 base *shrug*

Although it is fair to say this is a convoluted source that goes beyond VideoCardz so needs validating this can be traced back to Zotac.

Is this showing an SLI setup as GPU2 is not greyed out?
If (big if) so, might explain the GPU clock.

Delta colour compression is the gift that just keeps on giving. I'm impressed by how effective it is, and curious as to why it wasn't implemented earlier. Was it too costly in silicon for an era of relatively abundant bandwidth and expensive transistors?
 
Shame there is no support for FreeSync, at first I thought that's what Fast Sync might have been. I want a new card to replace my 7970, and one of those curved ultra wide 1440p screens with variable refresh. It doesn't look like Polaris will have the power, but there is no way I will pay the prices of the G-Sync models. GTX 1070 (especially the 3rd party models) looks like a great card, if only g-sync monitors were more affordable.

I have two 290X for that exact same target (freesynced 3840*1440 monitor).
Maybe a couple of Polaris 10 will do the job, if you don't mind waiting a couple of weeks for a driver with crossfire support after a high profile game's release, that is.
