The move towards CGI. What consitutes 'the look' and how close are we getting?

How is CGI created.
One day you will be able to create images like this at home.

That brings back memories. I used to work on those about 25 years ago.
It wasn't really CGI as we know it today. Nothing was being calculated or rendered, it was just manipulation of a frame store, but very clever.
