Rift, Vive, and Virtual Reality

I guess that huge resolution wouldn't make sense on a console, so Valve/HTC developed a VR headset that will need a powerful PC to be fully taken advantage of.
I'm starting to predict lots of people with dual card setups for VR. Me included :)
Depends on the cards available at the time of course, as well as the final specs of the headsets.
Given what AMD and nVidia is likely to bring to the table on 28nm, I'm assuming their 14/16nm FinFet products will perform quite well even as singles. So I'm likely to test with my current setup, upgrade to the most appetizing product at the new lithographic node, and if that proves tasty.... :)

Why would you render into a framebuffer that's larger than the native resolution of the VR display? They recommend 1.4x the native resolution. Does it have something to do with the final warping before the image is ready to be sent to the screen?

I think so. The final, warped image is not rectangular, it's more rounded. So if you want to be able to fill the corners of your rectangular display, you have to render a bigger image.

That's interesting. I'll have to read that doc again to wrap my head around how the warp works, and what part of the rectangular image fits into the final warped output. To me, it raises some questions about rendering below the native res of the panel.

One other aspect since Facebook is having a heavy hand with Oculus. The whole 3D movie, interactive movie is also a big deal, and I'm not sure if that requires any GPU work. Interestingly enough these folks who experienced their first VR porn experience real footage but they can also look around the room. Having said that, the last testimonial was that it was a game changer - which pretty much means VR will have legs even if VR gaming doesn't succeed.

This is the way the world ends, not with a real bang, but with a virtual whimper.

And a slow draining of the batteries

Video was hilarious, but I don't see how they can control where they look as they were just playing what looked like a normal porn video through the VR set. Surely there was no movement control there, and they were just watching porn from very, very close.

Zooming should be possible to some extent. Also, someone I know had a demonstration of an Oculus Rift implementation where they had filmed something from a single point of view with several stereo lenses at the same time to get a full 360 degree recording. They used it to help people with agorafobia, simulating being in the middle of a large, crowded square. She was so impressed that when a pre-recorded person came up to ask the time, she almost couldn't stop herself from answering.

And now all I can think of is VR orgies. Thanks.

oh man.
totally got nerd chills watching this. They really captured EvE online so well here. To see a titan come in at the end was just amazing.

Can't wait to see what they do with the mining - eight straight hours of staring at asteroids with VR goggles on :)

I once did a warp to 0 on the hulks while my corp was mining just to say hi. Oh man did I get an earful.

It's worth noting how much rendering power is actually going to be needed to max out the Oculus headset in the latest games at max settings:

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/nvidia_geforce_gtx_titan_x_review,17.html

At it's native resolution of 2560x1440, in order to render 2 scenes (which is required for stereoscopic 3D) at the native refresh of 90fps, it's going to require a Titan X.... per eye! And even then, that won't be enough for some games!

Personally I'm considering getting a couple of Pascal 970 equivalents next year.

How did you get to that? The current Rift has a definition of 2560×1440, but that means 1280×1440 per eye. So it's not much more work than regular rendering at 2560×1440 with a target of 90FPS.
