Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain & Ground Zeroes

I have heard some "rumors" about an event related to the game that is going to happen in a specific country. Hope its not bogus ;)

I would trade 60fps for more graphics features for sure. I'm all about how close can we get to film quality graphics. If every developer was restricted to 60fps gameplay, then we'd be several generations behind in the actual "look" of a game (at least consoles). Graphics features cost ms and some are more expensive than others (SSR happens to be expensive, especially if you try to apply it to all reflective surfaces). HBAO+ is also expensive but significantly impacts the lighting/shading of the frame.

I'm gaming on a top end PC graphics card (GTX 980) and will trade 60fps@1080p for 30fps@4k or even 30fps@1440p all other things being equal. The visual experience is more important for me than getting the smoothest animation and feedback.

Just my 2 cents

As mentioned; the improvements are nice - but they are not central to the gameplay aspects of the game. Essentially, the game will play exactly the same, irregardless if one version offers better (more) lights and better reflections or not.

The exact same thing can be said about the XBO and PS4 as compared to the PS360 for the vast majority of games. But lots of people still bought them and I'll wager most that bought them bought them for the better graphics. In fact I know a few people who have stuck with their PS360's and in every instance the main reason for doing so is "I don't care about graphics". It seems to me that the vast majority of people who upgraded from the PS360 to the new generation within their first year of life did so because they like shinier graphics, regardless of whether they effect gameplay or not.

The graphics aren't a core of the game, but they look great.

This game is cross-generational between PS3 to PS4 and 360 to Xbone, and PC now as well. The differences between the visuals are easily pointed out, but while playing could hardly be any more vague. And that should be expected given the target platforms being almost a decade apart in technology and performance.

The difference between low-medium settings on PC and extra high settings on PC are for the most part and in many situations minor to imperceptible. Texture setting at low to extra high particularly, there is almost no difference. The draw distance of the lighting

More notable differences are the addition of SSAO (which is not that great an implementation here IMO), and more impressive is the screen space reflections added, however tbh are rarely ever seen in Ground Zeroes. Unlike in say Killzone Shadowfall where you see them every scene constantly.

The biggest difference I have personally noticed is the fidelity of the Depth of Field effects, which is much more robust on PC. Everything else comparatively between PS4 and PC version is basically peanuts though.

This is not a criticism of the graphics in the game, or the PC port (which is very good) merely pointing out that this game has been made to scale on multiple hardware formats, and between the next-generation console versions and PC, there is only a very small difference in the experience with the (very slightly) upgraded visuals on PC.

Ground Zeroes on PS4 or PC is not any technical tour de force. But importantly it looks extremely good without being one. And that is thanks to the fantastic lighting model and amazing art design, something we will see on all platforms. The addition of SSAO or screen space reflections, whatever, barely make any difference in this game visually. It's not that type of game visually. And it doesn't matter because it looks great anyway.

Anyhow, came to share some 4K shots of the game I made :)

As for why gaming on consoles:
Fixed hardware for years, no upgrades required.

I see this a lot and it's pretty annoying. My 670 and 2500K will be 3 years old in 3 months and I'm not even remotely close to requiring an upgrade yet. In fact if my requirements were only to game at console graphics settings/frame rate (which is the only context in which the above statement makes sense) then there's a pretty damn good chance that said PC which is over a year older than the current console generation will last out the entire console generation with equal or better graphics/frame rate and not an upgrade in site.

Granted your mileage will vary depending on what hardware you buy and when, but the same rule applies to console too. I really think it's time to drop the outdated notion that PC's "require" regular hardware upgrades altogether. The vast majority of PC gamers upgrade because they want to for better graphics/frame rate, not because they need to in order to continue playing new games.

The biggest difference I have personally noticed is the fidelity of the Depth of Field effects, which is much more robust on PC. Everything else comparatively between PS4 and PC version is basically peanuts though.

IMO the graphical differences in any game are cumulative and work together on an almost subconscious level to wow you as opposed to being specifically and individually noticeable. So while you may not be able to specifically pick out graphical differences between two versions without flicking between identical screenshots, it doesn't mean that the cumulative effect of the various subtle improvements overall won't give you that additional "wow" factor.

For example I often look at the PS3/PS4 comparison shots and even video's at DF and the differences don't really jump out at me. But that doesn't mean that Far Cry 3 on PS4 wouldn't be causing me to stop a hell of a lot more to say "ooh nice" or "wow" at the graphics than the same game on PS3, even if in side by side comparisons they look "more or less the same".

Lol you guys are so obsessed with being so specific and trying to make a point, oh and then saying "you must not be noticing all the effects coming together." Lmao.

Believe me, I can pick out exactly where the games are apparently different. The textures on low to extra high *are* different. But the difference is not like other typical PC games.

Yes, it looks better. Shocking. Yes, I play my old games when I get a new computer as well. The game assets still are mostly the same, that's why it looks mostly the same on PS4 or PC outside of the extra effects.

The difference between the PS3 and PS4 version is a lot stronger, if you've actually seen them side by side. But with this game the difference is less because of the assets. That is not saying extra effects aren't making the PC version look better. Please learn to disconnect two unrelated ideas, thanks.

Again the largest difference (complimenting the PC version here) is the DOF, especially in cutscenes. The difference during gameplay of DOF is not very apparent.

Edit -

Here is a comparison of the different effects quality... as I've said the largest difference of PS4 and PC on Extra High is the DOF effect: http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/gu...-ground-zeroes-graphics-and-performance-guide

The shadowing between low to extra high is easily noticeable in all scenarios.

The texture from low to extra high on PC..... almost look identical:

http://international.download.nvidi...e-quality-comparison-2-extra-high-vs-low.html

Even in screenshots the texture differences are barely perceptible, if at all, up close. The most difference is in the distance. Texture filtering is similarly barely changed between low to extra high on PC.

For this game, the assets are the limiting factor. Oddly enough, many PC sites have not shied away from calling it one of the best looking PC games, even though technically it definitely is not, and it looks almost identical on the PS4 lol.

Ugh, they can take their DOF and shove up their ...

First thing I'll be turning off on the PC version if I can. Even if I'm already at 60 FPS (minimum for playing any game for me anymore).

At 30 FPS games look significantly worse to me. Stuttery, choppy, or full of motion blur (as bad or worse than the evil that is DOF, IMO) during gameplay. After doing most of my gaming at 60 FPS, going back to 30 FPS is quite literally an eye-sore. And detracts significantly from both the graphics and the immersion. Just like 24 FPS film is totally inadequate in my eyes now (hence, I no longer go to the cinema).

The increase in realistic movement, perception, and temporal IQ is just huge. Again, IMO. YMMV. I have friends that were perfectly fine with jaggy games with no anti-aliasing, while I myself couldn't stand the jaggies. In many ways 30 FPS versus 60 FPS is like that for me.

It's one of the main reasons I can't stand to start up a console game anymore and haven't started up any of my consoles in almost a year now. That and not being able to turn off DoF and Motion Blur.

Regards,
SB

Soooo.... Hilarity continues.

In today's Christmas edition of the KojiPro podcast, both Kojima and the female host wore some strange chicken hat a lot.
mYQfL88.jpg

At the end of the [3hr] podcast, they unveiled that this hat will be the part of the The Phantom Pain! After players die a lot in a single area, a prompt will appear that will offer them this hat. When wearing it, for the short time enemy soldiers will ignore the player [hopefully they will have animation of laughter :D], and in nighttime scenarios the crown of the chicken will glow with bright red light that will help the player to better orient himself [enemies will ignore that light also].

Quite the clever way of "shaming" newbs. :D

Shinkawa personally designed this hat so that it does not obscure other items that Big Boss can wear on his face [gas mask, goggles, etc]. :D Also, because game has real-time cinematics, this chicken hat will remain on BB all the time!

Oh Kojima.

edit- Additionally, PC users have managed to find the way to unpack and modify files in Ground Zeroes asset archives. Visual effects can be now tweaked, textures can be repacked, some temp audio files of old David Hayter lines were supposedly found [possibly parts of Deja Vu mission that were not used].

edit2- Playing any mission as Revengeance Raiden or MGS1 Cyborg Ninja is now possible [those models were already playable in some parts of GZ].

it seems buying MGS V TPP for PC (instead of on cosnoles) will be best for me (i am an addict for modding). Hmm, i should try GZ first on laptop and my pc.

I'm not sure how you conclude it looks "almost identical to the PS4 version" in light of this:

http://international.download.nvidi...-zeroes-pc-vs-playstation-4-comparison-1.html

No-ones saying there's a generational difference there but to conclude they are almost identical seems way off. And even if it did look identical to the PS4 version, why would PC sites shy away from saying it's one of the best looking PC games if it is? It certainly looks like a top 5 game to my eye's regardless of whatever technical deficiencies you think it may have.

just tryied on my super old PC with 1GB VRAM
(AMD Phenom II x2 550, Radeon HD 7770)

how the heck they port this to PC? its super light-weight!. Low download size, quick loading, by default almost all setting on High and running almost 60fps constantly. Except when i turn around very fast, my VRAM struggle.

the most surprising, it dont make a fuss with my 4ch speaker. Usually games will lost some sounds in 4ch.

decission decission, play MGS V TPP on PC or PS4... There's no cross-play right?

@COPS N RAPPERS
does the facial animation works with other costumes? i cant really see his mouth :(

(around 26:36, he screams, maybe watch frame by frame?)

I believe Raiden doesn't have bones to speak. I was playing the extra content with him and even then i didn't see his mouth move.

The story also of the dlc treats Raiden as a robot compared to the Raiden from rising.
Jamais vu -

...logically he has no story in MGSV so... being a life less mech would seem logical. He does have speech, but it's synsynthesized and projected like a toy.
