Every time I check this thread lately I feel like I'm walking into someone's bedroom at an entirely inappropriate moment...
yeah i appreciate Cyan's enthusiasm but I keep thinking, surely there is a Might n Magic thread already..? otoh it's the only thread i follow on b3d which is currently active... so actually it's kind of adorable to see him gush over an ancient game... ^^

And to discover the majesty of P.C Gaming
I gotta admit that I've fallen in love with Heroes of Might and Magic series for dear life. PC gaming is also unique and I actually understand the appeal of it, I love it, actually --not crazy in love as with Heroes of Might and Magic despite Davros bold claims, lulz. My large collection of PC games are a confirmation of that.

In regards to Heroes, I managed to run Heroes 3 at 4000x4000 using Heroes 3 HD utility. Unusable though, 'cos as Shifty explained once to me, resolution directly affects FOV in 2D, and since it is a 2D game, running it at 4000x4000 on a native 1366x768 display makes everything look so tiny that you just can see a window which is like 50x50 pixels in size.

Additionally, in Heroes of Might and Magic V, proper 3D game, I set the resolution to 2560x1600 without a hitch in performance, using windowed mode. It's even better in the expansion, the Tribes of the East, 'cos using the ini file you can set the internal resolution of the game and the size of the window that internal resolution is going to be displayed at.

I chose 2560x1600 as the internal resolution of the game, while running it on a 1280x720 window. Amazing stuff, and it merges perfectly with anything running on the OS. Easy to switch back and forth on Windows 8.

shouldn't you chose a res that is a direct multiple ?
Hmmmmm, didn't think about it really. But I changed the values now, it looks great, and it runs butter smooth without the fan even starting to spin. My CPU is an i5 and I throttle it down to 1.1 or 1.2 GHz -it maxes out at 3GHz, so yes, there is a big performance delta but I don't actually need it, it's pretty curious-

I can't stand the sound of the fan when it begins to spin and I don't want the laptop to be running at 70º C or more when there is no need for that.

I set the windowed mode resolution to 1280x720 and the internal resolution to 2560x1440. :) Great stuff. That's one of the fun things of the PC, among others.

My rather crappy Intel HD 3000 graphics is not that bad of a GPU, it handles AF just fine, -AA is a different matter though- but shadows are its Achilles Heel.

I set everything to max settings (Very High) on the game Options. So in order to keep the fan from spinning and my laptop to run at 60ºC or more I just disable these settings in the user.cfg file (Dynamic Lights and Shadows -you aren't going to miss them at all-, water reflections... it depends on you, dunno):

My Documents\My Games\Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East\Profiles\<Your User Name>\user_a2.cfg

- Open the file with Notepad

Find these lines:

Find the line setvar gfx_dynamic_lights = 1
Change it to setvar gfx_dynamic_lights = 0

/No dynamic lights/

Find the line setvar gfx_noshadows = 0
Change it to setvar gfx_noshadows = 1

/No shadows/

Vsync (ESSENTIAL!)

Find the line setvar gfx_vsync = 0
Change it to setvar gfx_vsync = 1

Vsync is also essential to run the game smoothly and not having your GPU running the game at 100fps and cause it to wear and tear.

Internal resolution. You can go absolutely CRAZY with this nowadays. :p :D Check your GPU documentation in order to know the max resolution your GPU accepts.

Find this line (mine is set at 2560x1440, change the values accordingly)

setvar gfx_resolution = 2560x1440

Window size resolution. Windowed mode is something most people dig and it's flawless in Windows 7-8 in order to merge applications and use them seamlessly. It works especially well in the Heroes 5 expansion, Tribes of the East 'cos you can choose the internal resolution, as pointed out already.

setvar gfx_window_size = 1280x720

The internal resolution in this case is mathematically the direct multiple of 1280x720 and I play on a 1366x768 laptop screen so 1280x720 as the window size is perfect for that, it looks like an actual window and you can seamlessly switch between applications.

Heroes of Might and Magic V Tribes of the East can be running like that for days and days. :)

Additionally, Heroes of Might and Magic 5 is my favourite Heroes of Might and Magic game ever, and that's saying a lot! It's my fav along with Heroes 2 and Heroes 3, but I just prefer 5 'cos of the 3D graphics and because it's the logical evolution of Heroes 3, the most solid game of the franchise.

Where Heroes of Might and Magic V shines the most is when you have the Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East game. It's a stand-alone expansion and it doesn't need the previous titles.

I have them all because I purchased them at GoG. But the point is that I began to play the original campaigns of both Heroes of Might and Magic V and the second expansion of the game Heroes of Might and Magic V - Hammer of Fate on the precious precious precious Heroes of Might and Magic V - Tribes of the East.

The improvements of Tribes of the East expansion are so many and that's Heroes of Might and Magic V at its best.

In order to play the original campaigns of Heroes of Might and Magic V and Heroes of Might and Magic V Hammer of Fate on Heroes of Might and Magic V Tribes of the East (which also has its own campaign, of course, check these links)

http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=23962&pagenumber=18

You have to place the files in the UserMODs/ folder of your Heroes of Might and Magic V Tribes of the East directory. Easy as pie. :D

It works perfectly well for me. That's all you need. I am uploading the files in a single package to my OneDrive account, I will share them whenever they are uploaded (uploading as I write).

Here it is! No need to download the files from different sites anymore!

The original Heroes of Might and Magic V and Heroes of Might and Magic V Hammer of Fate campaigns available to play on Heroes of Might and Magic V Tribes of the East :D

The files include the dialogues, the text files, the Cutscenes, and the campaigns themselves.

For those who have the great, awesome Heroes of Might and Magic V Tribes of the East just remember that the only thing you have to do is copying the files to your Usermods folder. They will be available to play as regular campaigns.

Finally, the files are from the English version. I can download the French, Russian, Spanish, Polish, German, etc versions of the games from GoG using the downloader, but I don't know where to look for the files, so... that's it. :smile2:

Thanks to the mods for creating an exclusive thread for Heroes of Might and Magic, some of the most wonderful series in the history of videogames.

The thread's title is HoMM, not Heroes of Might and Magic, though, not especially happy about that. Trying to live with it...

These are some more posts about Heroes of Might and Magic from other fellow forumers and myself.

Some very interesting info in a few of them, within this compilation:

I've never played that game but if it would be officially called "The Adventures of Sir Kicksalot Deathboot in the Land of the Conspicuously Placed Spike Racks" then I would! :devilish:

I agree... They technically can change and shorten the title, but they likely wouldn't. :)

Anyways, HoMM is so great that it even has peasants as valuable units. Typical geniuses ideas from Heroes of Might and Magic.

I am sharing my ideas so I can put some pressure on Ubisoft, thus they might consider adding a Werewolf faction.

Shared my thoughts on that here:

Here in this thread you can find an authentic incunable document for strategists, fauna and so on.

There we are the "experts" (xDDDDDD except me) in that thread discussing possible strategies and innovations in the game. The truth is that most people that play HoMM are awesome people.

The document of which I am talking about is a PDF.

I remembered playing this game on my feature phone, lol. Really. This game used to be released on feature phones (Java cell phones) by Gameloft. Loved the gameplay. But on PC, this game looks and plays much even better.

hehe, sacrilege! Yes, nothing like the PC for it. It's a game that could be also played just fine on consoles though, 'cos it's more about your intelligence rather than how fast you press on buttons.

Here someone is conducting a poll on which Heroes of Might and Magic is people's favourite. I voted for Heroes of Might and Magic 5 and gave my reasons for that vote:

I first tried Heroes from some PC gaming magazine disc that had the Heroes 2 demo on it. Got hooked pretty quick. Bought Heroes 3 the day it came out and it's been my favorite ever since. My brother and I used to do hotseat games against AI. I still like to go back and play a game here and there using the Heroes3 HD mod.

I told my story with Heroes of Might and Magic in a thread in the heroes community forums.

After purchasing most of them, and getting every single HoMM-like game out there I think that no similar game based on the HoMM formula is better than Age of Wonders series and Eador: Genesis -to me a 21st century true classic-.

I talked about why I mention those games here and why I'd wholeheartedly recommend them. :smile2: A HoMM fan can't go wrong with those:

Elemental: Fallen Enchantress is also good.

The power of Luna. A video showing how awesome Luna can be in the early game, because of her unique attributes. She only carries around a Pixie with her and it is pretty cool how it works.

Another key of this video is that the weaker your army is, the more stacks the AI will spread around in the battlefield.

Finally, for those who like HoMM like games, Disciples 1 and 2 are simply fabulous.

I've long been a closet fan of this series forever. Every couple of years I return to it, and it never disappoints. Very good fun.
