I wonder how many XB1 Madden Bundles did move. :???:

MS, should have gotten August... almost a freebie. I guess The Last of US Remastered kept Sony afloat during August.

Edit: Patcher's numbers were pretty close... especially being source limited.
Analyst: PS4 sales slowed in August — Xbox One and Wii U both saw gains

In August, Xbox One sales were up 14 percent month-over-month to approximately 150,000 in the U.S., according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. Nintendo’s Wii U saw massive growth of 111 percent year-over-year to 65,000 during the month. Sony’s PlayStation 4, meanwhile, actually sold worse in August than in July, but that doesn’t mean Microsoft’s console beat it.

“We expect PS4’s [August] sales to again exceed those of the Xbox One,” wrote Pachter.

Sony sold approximately 175,000 PS4s in the U.S. last month. That’s a 14 percent drop from the previous month.

“[PS4 still outsold Xbox One] despite the June introduction of a $400 Xbox One without Kinect and the August release of a $400 Madden NFL 15 bundle that includes a download code [for Madden], essentially bundling the game for free,” wrote Pachter.

Wedbush, which gathers its data by reaching out to retailers and content producers, estimates that Microsoft sold around 50,000 Madden NFL 15 bundles. That powered much of the system’s growth. As for Nintendo, Mario Kart 8, the racing game that has players driving around as Donkey Kong, Bowser, and other characters, is continuing to drive Wii U sales.

As of now, we're looking at for August...
PS4 -175K
XB1 -150k
Wii U - 65k

A hardware pie chart is finally out on GAF. Here's some estimates from it

PS4 ~ 190k
XB1 ~ 160.2k
WIU ~ 59.75k
360 ~ 49.5k
PS3 ~ 27.25k
Wii ~ 13.5k

Pretty bad all around. X1 closed the gap a bit.

3rd grade maths hint
if you get outsold by something, you dont close a gap ;)
but I agree bad month all around

you've gotta ask yourself 'ok japan usually leads and they have now gone mobile' but is the west following? really?

Last month PS4 wins by ~60k IIRC. This month around 30k. Pretty simple concept. Like the difference between the debt and the deficit, depends what you refer too.

Worth noting as usual X1 and especially PS4 still hold huge leads over PS3/360 to this point in their generation. It's just the ongoing sales that seem a bit weak right now. But perhaps more of the early demand was satiated leading to less now, but still overall greater demand. Holiday sales will be interesting, especially as MS will likely make a big push as Greenberg called non-holiday "preseason" :p . Of course without hard actions like a price cut it could mean little. Whatever the case, that's why I say interesting, and also to see if sales rebound for core consoles from a relatively slow 2014 so far.

I thought it might be interesting to look at XB1 sales as a percent of PS4 by NPD month

Nov 13 80%
Dec 13 105%
Jan 14 52%
Feb 14 96%
Mar 14 84%
Apr 14 58%
May 14 39%
Jun 14 73%
Jul 14 70%
August 14 84%

Average percentage (monthly percentages added up and divided by 10): 74%

Total life to date NPD Xbox unit sales as a percent of PS4: 81%

The only gap that the XB1 narrowed a bit was the month-over-month gap, but the lifetime gap continues to grow. It was to be expected that the XB1 would be closer this month, thanks to the Madden bundle. I have a feeling that the white Destiny bundle has been slowing down PS4 sales since its announcement, especially in August. My reasoning is: in August, the white Destiny bundle is so close that people are more likely to hold off of buying the regular PS4 SKU. But back in June/July, it's so far from release that people are less likely to wait. If you look at amazon's rankings between June and August, the Destiny bundle ranked highest in August.

Pretty simple concept..
which you obviously havent understood rangers ;)
the xbone aint closing the gap, is still widening (ok at a lesser rate) but its definitely not closing
I know you are eagre but wait at least until halo relaunch month and then you can talkj about 'closing the gap' worldwide(*)

(*)definition worldwide = only the USA

If we're talking about closing the gap on total sales, then no, X1 isn't closing the gap. The only way to close the gap is for X1 to sell higher than PS4. But if we're talking monthly sales, then yes, X1 closing the gap.

If 750k is considered a "gap" between PS4/XB1 North America sales... then 5.3 million must be the "Grand Canyon" between the two in worldwide sales.

I'm pretty sure MS is more concerned with filling the chasms... not just the ditch.

At 80% of 360's numbers, X1 isn't doing as badly in the US as I thought. Looks like it'll be very XBox original - a US (+UK) console without much further adoption worldwide.

A couple of things. One, I'm kind of surprised that the PS4 sold under 200k. That's not encouraging. Hopefully we see a north of 350k month in september and around 2M units for Nov/Dec. I think they'll need an official pricecut in early 2015.

Two, while X1 was close, I thought this was the month they may outsell PS4 thanks to the madden bundle, as it is now, I don't think they ever will in the US.

People must have waited for September for the glacier Destiny Bundle.

Also notice that PS4 sales even improved from July to August, even slightly, from ~187k to ~190k which are in fact very similar to the normalized comparative 360 numbers provided by Shifty:

XB1 Destiny (#15) has surpassed Titanfall (#16) on Amazons 2014 Best Sellers list.

Well, the game is litterally given for free with any XB1 purchase currently.

But the others XB1 multiplats (and pre-orders) are worryingly very far away in the amazon multiplat bestsellers. Current Amazon bestsellers list of only multiplatform entries:

Destiny XB1 : 5
Destiny PS4 bundle : 6
Destiny PS4 : 7

GTAV - PS4 : 21
Batman Arkham Knight limited edition - PS4 : 23
Destiny -Digital code - PS4 : 34
Fifa 15 Ultimate Team - PS4 : 37
Destiny limited Edition - PS4 : 38
Fifa 15 - PS4 : 46

Destiny limited Edition - XB1 : 50
Madden NFL 15 - PS4 : 54
Destiny Digital Guardian edition - PS4 : 59
Shadow of mordor - PS4 : 62
Watch_Dogs - PS4 : 63

Madden NFL 15 - XB1 : 71
GTAV - XB1 : 72

NBA 2K15 - PS4 : 74
COD Ghosts - XB1 : 77 (sale)
Fifa 15 ultimate edition - XB1 : 83

AC4 - PS4 : 85
COD Advanced Warfare - PS4 : 96

The first XB1 multiplatform game after Destiny is Madden, at #71.
