I see no reason to expect the Japanese market is ever going to achieve what it once was, they seem to have mostly moved on from home consoles.

MS wasted a crap load of effort there which didn't pan out to much (1.5m?) they'd have been better off spending that effort/money on NA or EU. It certainly couldn't have resulted in less reward.

Or China... Singapore, Hong Kong

Japan alone took around 10 million PS3s last generation, and we know PS3 didn't do as well as it should. There's almost every reason to believe the PS4 will perform better than the PS3 right now due to everybody expecting much better software support.

Many here don't know this but a lot of the Asian market follows Japanese trends.
What sells well in Japan most likely will sell pretty well in HK, Taiwan, and I expect also some SE Asia markets.
Giving up the Japanese market pretty much means disregarding the entire Asian market, and you really don't want that to happen. :???:

Not to mention all the well acclaimed Japanese games that come with it too. Some here may not care much about them but they have collected a reasonable audience overseas and shouldn't be ignored.

PS3 still did decently well selling ~10M.

The former editor and chief of Famitsu said that he wonders if the development costs might help revive the home console in Japan, which makes some sense... If software is easier to produce, there might be more software made for the Japanese market. I can see the PS4 selling at least as well as the PS3 or Wii, which is not an insignificant number.

I was simply arguing the point of home consoles being dead in Japan, not really reaching PS2 levels of success... that will be hard to achieve in this day and age. But I do think that the PS4 has the potential to do so, with develop costs being relatively low, and the PS4 not having as strong of a competitor as the PS3 did.

Regards development costs being low, they are near enough mobile level costs given middleware. You don't need to spend a fortune to write cryptuc or specialist code. You don't even need ot write your own engine. Pick up Unreal or Unity or whatever and knock out your JRPG in record time at minimal cost. The price of the SDKs and licensing is still a pain, but in comparison to previous generations like PS2, development is much cheaper for <AAA titles who have the sense to stick to a sane budget.

What do these numbers matter for, really?

TBH, I think the sales numbers for a console launch during the holidays says little more than how many units they've been able to produce before launch.

As Shifty said, >2 million xbones/ps4s would have been sold (out) regardless of what would be inside the box, just as we saw with the Wii U last year.
There's probably over 2 million people that would buy both consoles no matter what.

And the "NPD Win"? If Microsoft gets that, it's because they cut down the availability of the console down to less than half of the PS4's available countries.

What will be interesting to see is how the xbone fares in countries where the PS4 already has had a foothold of several months..

Why is console gaming considered "dead" or "dying" in japan just because the PS3 didn't sell as well as the PS2?

The PS2 sold 21 million and the GC sold 4 million into japan while the PS3 sold ~10 million and the Wii sold ~13 million. Throw in xbox sales and the gap closes even more.

Thats not growth but doesn't seem to warrant the belief that consoles are dying in japan.

Wow, both systems are selling more than I thought, the PS4 especially. That's ~2.1M in ~28 days or less! Demand doesn't seem to be slowing down at all. The PS4 has far surpassed Sony's own predictions of 3M by the end of 2013, and it's still heavily supply constrained in all countries. Production must have picked up to (try to) keep up with demand.

Ok, didn't see that coming.

Sold 4.2 million PS4s sold in 2013 alone.

That tells us the production capacity of Sony, until we see sure signs of a slowdown we can almost guess the sales..

of course Sony might have slowed down the production, nevertheless, i am really surprised that Sony was able to sell so many, was able to produce so many, and had the courage to order so many..

that is 7.2 million sold consoles, take note, the gamers have spoken..:)

Not just yet, Sony surely is holding stock for the Japan release, so you can expect the production capacity to be a bit higher than what we have seen during the last 1.5 months.

Sony may have been stockpiling for months. It's unlikely that they can produce at the rate of 40 million (or so) a year.

There was an earlier PR comment about shipping 16M units for (what I presume is fiscal) 2013. (Still seems high)

That's definitely congratulations to Sony! I would never have thought they could hit 4 million already. Makes you wonder about the production rate for the Japan facility(s).

And since that whole period has been supply constrained, in that they can't produce enough units to meet demand, and that there are no signs of a slowdown and there is still the Japan launch to go (a couple more million). Are they going to hit 7 million plus by March!?

That's incredible.

There's still massive demand for this thing here in the UK too.

Its going to smash through 5m easy. Infamous will help spurs sales too.
