PlayStation Camera: What are the benefits?

That's quite impressive then given how well it reportedly works. I guess it'll struggle with accents though, as words would have to be broken into phonemes and tested against, and any of these could fall over. That said, you could assign margin of error on phonemes. It's mostly vowels that vary between accents. Reduce a name to its consonants and add a selection of possible vowels between each of them, and you'd probably have a fairly robust solution for name correlation. Is my guess. ;)

The UK PS website calls it the PlayStation Camera. It's not even featured on the US website!

It's only in the specs section for some reason.

Here is a video of someone singing the commands & it work perfectly & fast so I'm guessing it's not going to have too much of a hard time with a accent.

It's one of the benefits HSA.

Tested it and yes it does.

"PlayStation Home Screen" then "Back To Game" rinse and repeat works as fluidly as Microsoft demod Kinect switching between Forza and the Xbox One's menu system. It appears that once you've got it's attention and give it a voice command it stays in 'listen mode' for a few seconds and the next command doesn't need to be prefaced by "PlayStation".

It's just a shame that "PlayStation" is a mouthful compared to "Xbox" :| I would prefer "Oi" so please fix that, Sony.

You can just say "station" if you want.

I'm going to test 'Playstation off' tomorrow, my wife can't seem to remember how to turn it off regardless how many times I show her....

It seems fairly good, it has the classic talk to me so I understand it feeling, but it's fast and usable when you don't have the controller in hand. And taking screenshots is nice without having to pause the game or reconfigure the share button.

Things I did without having to repeat myself.

From Killzone, Playstation, homesceeen, internet browser start, homesceeen, Killzone start.

The navigation is simple, you say homesceeen, then the name if the game or app then start. Everything cannot be controlled but what can works pretty good. From the demos I have seen it compares to the Kinect in understanding but it's definitely more simple in that it's more like commands than talking to the computer on enterprise..

And it seems that they did added some limitations as a way to avoid for example accidentally shutting down the console.
There is no simple Playstation shut down.

You say Playstation, power, turn off ps4.

D'oh! Okay that's much better - even if it is the name of that weird alien in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey

You can also use "Back To Game" if it's not been shut down.

Station did not work for me, weird, i forgot to mention back to game, works to :) Had my first voice moment, got up but forgot to shutdown the PS4, told it to shut down :)

I got Station working after a couple of attempts. I'm wondering if there is a degree of voice training/learning that occurs the more you use it.

But yeah, I'm getting a bit lazy with this voice stuff. It's hardly game changing but nice to be able to log out of one account, log into another and start a game without holding the controller because I'm opening a beer. Not literally right now, it's a bit early!

I was just reading a bit about SoftKinetic issu middleware, what little there is to read.

http://www.softkinetic.com/AboutUs/...layStation-4-Powered-By-SoftKinetic-iisu.aspx

SoftKinetic’s iisu middleware is compatible with most 3D depth-sensing cameras including time-of-flight, structured light and stereoscopic.

They do mention stereoscopic, but according to their FAQ none of the compatible cameras are stereoscopic. I wonder is they have their own in-house solution or if Sony provide a depth map via the SDK?

Hi.

Have any of you played Just Dance 2014 without Move? I've heard so many good and bad opinions about it, that I'm a bit confused and I would appreciate some opinions from my B3d buddies.

If movement recognition is so bad, do you think it's due to the software? Can you compare it to Just Dance 2014 in Xbox One?

Thank you!

They're probably (sic) using hidden Markov models for working out the probability of meaning.

Do you know if the voice stuff is game dependent ? I mean, do devs have to do something to explicitely enable voice commands in-game ?

When running BF4, it didn't work. Only after I went to playroom, forcing BG4 to be shut-down, voice worked again. In KZ as you mention, it works.

Weird stuff. So with the camera it seems to just track your hand? Presumably to stay compatible with Move tracking, if you have that? Does it support both? Apparently yes: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/21/just-dance-2014-ps4-review

And based on the below, if it can't properly track you it does a lot of guessing. But actually I hear that it's not that different with the 360 Kinect version, or even the Xbox One version:

Someone who really hated it:

And personally, I think that the PS3's own dancing game, Dance Party/Everybody Dance then is probably much better (at least that tracks the Move, and does so with very good accuracy).

So hopefully Sony releases a PS4 version of that one. Doing it with move removes a little bit of the challenge versus a full camera, but also really helps with needing less space. :p

By the way, my beard keeps growing, but without having retrained it, the camera still picks me up. It's definitely generally slower at doing so than the Kinect though. Only once have I had it not pick me up, or suggest I was a friend who had logged on once, very briefly before it changed its mind.

Thank you for your reply.

Actually, I asked because I enjoy Dancestar Party on my PS3. I really like the game but... I don't like using the Move for it. I don't like the feel of having something in my hand while I sweat, PLUS, the recognition isn't that good, because in some songs no matter how well you do it, it just doesn't work (for instance, I can get 5 stars for I see you baby (Shaking that ass) in intermediate and pro, but not in beginner because it doesn't track well my movements, no matter how I do it). Also, it's not tracking the rest of your body. You know you're just cheating yourself when you're moving all your body, because the camera doesn't really care, it only tracks the Move.

If Dragon partnered up with Sony for this, you'd find a press-release about it. I can have a look when I get home, but I doubt they would choose them as a partner - too expensive.
