Rumour: Epic to focus on Tech only, exit Video Game Development?

Ok, so Dennis Dyack won't find reason to sue them again, should that rumor turn out to be correct... ;)

Question is though, WHY would they go from game developer to only tech development? It's not as if their games haven't been successful or anything (although not terribly abundant...)

Also, who will get to take over their IPs, because I assume they're not going to just sink UT, Gears and so on in a deep-ocean trench. ;)

People Can Fly already took over the Gears IP with the Judgement title.

And when was the last time they had any Unreal title releases?

First is rumor.
Second Epic is also a successful developer so why leave the scene?
What do they gain from leaving?

Sounds like they are already focusing on Tech only.

No there's Fortnite.

Better focus and profitability? One of the early complaints of UE3 was that it was designed for Epic games and they didn't follow up with support properly. If Epic were operating as game developers who just made their engine available for others, supporting the platform would have gone against their mandate. There's a lot more money and security to be had in a key cross-platform engine, so it makes sense to pursue it. If Epic are to do both, they should probably branch off the game development into a separate company.

Yes, as of August 2012, Epic obtained the full ownership of People Can Fly.

It's still true that PCF is not Epic, perhaps it's like being on different development teams and the largest difference having to do with legal and financial corporation distinctions.

@Shifty Geezer

If they want to focus on the UE4 as you say then why develop simultaneously also Fortnite?
If they are no longer profitable as a developer then surely they might want to quit but I can't believe that Crytek that is younger and less successful will still make games but Epic, that has always been more successful both in themes of games and licenses, won't.

They want to finish the game they already started?

I'm not saying Epic will or won't quit, but that there's reasonable reason to. It's not an outrageous notion to stop making games if most of their money comes from licensing and they can improve that area of their business.

A quick Wikipedia lookup tells me a lot fo people left after a Chinese firm bought a massive holding in the company and Cliffy B left. Epic subsidiaries Titan Studios and Impossible Studios have been dissolved. So engine only might be where Epic is headed. And let's be honest - most productivity tools companies work in developing the tools rather than use them to produce their own content. Microsoft doesn't have a publishing arm for producing books written by Word, for example. Red make movie cameras and not movies. Adobe makes publishing software and doesn't publisher magazines itself. Games are a bit outside the norm in that regard, and as development shifts towards middleware, specialist tool makers as opposed to game makers licensing their personal middlewares makes sense - tools and games are two different businesses requiring two different models.

Sure, sure.

If Epic won't show up on the 21st then I would be more open to believe this rumor but for now I am cautiously skeptical.

Epic may well show up tooting their tools and showing a demo - that's what they did at PS4's reveal. They may also have an XBi exclusive.

Tech-only didn't work out so great for Lithtech and Gamebryo. The game is the mother of invention so I would think an engine company would not innovate well.
