Rovio buys Futuremark

Hmm. Maybe it makes sense if they, being so prominent on so many platforms, are going to do a mobile benchmarking system for 2D, Physics and 3D?

EDIT: They bought Futuremark Games Studio, which has released Unstoppable Gorg, The Shattered Horizon and Hungribles. Futuremark remains its own thing and keeps on focussing on PC benchmarks.

Why would they need a license to use their own 3D engines, if they've bought the company?

Corrected.

But it should be interesting if they get access to the x86/ARM 3D engine that futuremark has been developing for the upcoming 3DMark for Windows 8.

Well that's surprising. FGS hasn't exactly been a blockbuster game studio, but I didn't realize they were up for sale. Hopefully this will let Rovio go in some interesting directions in the long-run.

On a somewhat related note, this is going to make playing Six Degrees of Future Crew a great deal more complex...

It probably wasn't "actively for sale", but the circles are quite small here in Finland, and developers in short supply, so probably it was just a case of "We have crapload of money and need your coders, how much?"
