My son made the frontpage of the local paper!

I was gonna post it up in this thread, but I hate how the title looks since I screwed it up and I can't fix it.

He's at another meet right now, I couldn't go due to a work meeting. He hasn't seen it yet, he's gonna flip when he does! :D

It's ok to be quietly busting with pride, ain't it?

That's awesome, John. Congrats to Justin, just make sure whatever AI he gives his robotic creations follow Asimov's three laws.

Congratulations, and watch out for big muscular dudes with Austrian accents knocking on your door.

Just picked him up from today's competition, team 1233D won the tourney today and got their own invite to the world.

2 of the 9 teams who've qualified so far for World from Indiana are now from CPHS. :)

Congrats to your son diggie. That's an awesome achievement, please keep us updated when they go to Worlds.

Is that kid picking his nose in the background?

I think this calls for some decidedly NON-quiet bustling with pride. :)

Also, maybe some father-son time to celebrate, spent taking a trip to a ice cream place or something? :D I'd say to a penny arcade, getting in some co-op Gauntlet action or maybe Op Wolf or Alien Breed or even Robotron, but sadly, those are pretty much a thing of the past these days...

Had a father/son/daughter trip to Gamestop the night before and picked him up the latest Tekken for his 3DS to give him something new to play on the many hours of bus riding to get to the competition, and we'll probably be going out to get lunch sometime soon and picking up some Coldstones on the way home. ;)

My wife has been looking at family packages to the competition for the last couple of hours, looks like the whole clan might head out for the event. :D

BTW I congratulate him.

On a tangent:

I think I am a bit paranoid but I would not put personally identifiable information out though. I bet people could easily figure out just who I am and what I do, but somehow I always thought it was a good idea not to have such easy access to that information.

I have my real name listed under my account here and elsewhere, I know there ain't no such thing as anonymity so I try and just remember that. I'm not that worried about it.

That's Q, the team teacher/leader. For an extremely religious and right-wing crazy he's actually a pretty nice guy, we get along a lot better than either of us think we should. :) (He knows I'm a godless communist, but forgives me anyways...we're the only geeks we know. ;) )

I actually try to act as though I am speaking in person to people regardless :) So it isn't precisely the anonymity, however especially with my kid I try to keep things vague so that they can later decide what they want.

I am glad you have a right wing religious friend digi it is good for you :)

Greetz from Anaheim!!!

Got done with the robotics tourney yesterday. Our teams had mixed results, Just's team ended up 20/100 in his division in the qualifying rounds but none of our teams made the finals. Still, they're all winners just for making it there.

Normally I'd just think that a platitude to help the losers feel better, but in this case I agree with it. The convention was an absolute BLAST! It was like the Island of Broken Toys for geeks, all the misfits/oddballs/outcast geeks from all over the world finally finding a place where they are the gods. :)

Truly a fine time. My daughter Maddy did NOT want to leave the convention center ever, I think she had even more fun that Just there and he had a great time. I think the geek gene is strong in both my kids, and I'm quite pleased.

We're getting ready to head to Universal Studios for today and tomorrow, after we finished the competition yesterday we snuck out out a little early and hit a local K1 Kart Speedway and had ANOTHER absolute blast as we discovered how to do go-karting RIGHT! MAN that place roxors! We did a couple of 14 lap races and all had an insanely fine time.

Oh, some picts:
