*God Of War 3 Thread v2.0 + Interview Stig Asmussen

I think you have interpreted my post wrong.
I want to make it clear: I do not criticize people when they don't like explicit violence - of course everyone has its own taste, which is perfectly fine...I mean it would be idiotic to criticize someone if he don't like violence!

What I do criticize is, when people look at a game which is (not(!!) defined by its violent content but is) well known for its ultra bad ass violent "I don't make friends...
I even killed my family because I had to
" main character Kratos (and Kratos is indeed IMO what defines God of War ;-)) and than state that the game is to violent.

What is the alternative? Make it less violent, make his moves less brutal, give him long blonde wavy hair like in the old greek adventure movies? Of course you can do it, and then the tech would still be great and the soundtrack as well and the graphics would be astounding...but then you don't have a God of War game anymore, but something different!

But hey...maybe I am overreacting here (because we are talking about GOW 3 here! and back in time, GOW2 was my only sanity justification for having a 600 Euro launch PS3) and it is time to move on (I had the very same discussion with other people about Gears of War 2 being to violent)

peace everyone

You see, I already said that I thought you're not that kind of user that has an opinion like that :D , but I replied Iike I did because I couldn't be sure of it and I also thought that it was an important point to comment.

However, I still think that anybody may criticize any game. I could say I like games with an interactive open world but I don't like GTA because of its content.

Regards.

The soundtrack is great, the graphics are top notch, and the technology has no rival. It's all they have left.

That doesn't make any sense. Speaking for myself, this is one of the games I bought my PS3 to play. I do want to play it. God of War has always been violent, and I play a lot of violent games. For whatever reason, some of the vids I've seen don't sit well with me. I don't like watching movies where people are gratuitously brutalized or tortured. Basically, I'm not a fan of gore porn. Looking at this game, that seems to be what it is. The violence obviously isn't there for historical accuracy. It isn't there because they're making a statement about violence. The violence is there as entertainment. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with that. Maybe that's a testament to how good the graphics are, because it's unsettling for me.

I have a feeling I'll still end up playing it. It's just an initial reaction I had, that I wasn't expecting.

Are you (and all other "it is to brutal") guys serious? Did you play the other GOW (no not God of War, but Gears of War!!)?

Criticizing GOW because of its violence is like criticizing Mass Effect for being science fiction, or is like criticizing GTA for beeing open world, or criticizing Sing Star for having to sing...the brutality is part of the game and its universe, there is no alternative!

It's subjective, a matter of taste. Is not like I choose which games to like and which not to. For what is worth I've never liked the GTA series either, not because it's an open world but because I find that game silly. Again, my opinion.

Like I said the game looks gorgeous, but when I play it I can't ignore the gratuitous violence rejoice. I felt the same way when I watched Sin City. Enjoy it if it's your cup of tea, I'll be playing BF:BC2 instead ;)

03-11-10: Final Impression

It's done. Finished.

After 5 long years the God of War story arc has come to a close and, man, what an ending. I can tell you right now that it's probably not what you might expect--at least it wasn’t for me. It's definitely going to spawn a ton of discussions on gaming forums too. It will be interesting to see what people say as they both stand behind and oppose where it's gone and how it's told. Personally--even though I have some issues with the way it was handled--I think that it's about as epic as one could expect from a series of this magnitude. As a character, Kratos is delved into a little deeper with this telling which of course crescendos interestingly near the end. There are some cool revelations in store for the fans. I do, however, think they could have gone beyond what was told and more into the development of Kratos as a meaningful and interesting character. All-in-all it was still a tremendous ride coupled with a praiseworthy ending. If you're a fan of the series then you must play this game.

Santa Monica Studios should be proud of what they've done with the GoW series. After finishing the game last night I took a step back and looked at all of it and as a piece of entertainment I have to say that I just love it. From this perspective you kind of just have to sit back and smile as realizing the series knows exactly what it is--epically over the top in every way. It knows it's going to offend some people with its ridiculous amounts of gore, unapologetic sex scenes (wait until you see this one) and the pure, revenge-filled gameplay. It knows you're going to eat all of this stuff up loving ever minute of it! With each game having a different director at the helm a unique perspective was brought to the series with each iteration that's benefited it immensely. It managed to stayed about as fresh as it could in a series that’s not as malleable as other games in terms of gameplay.

Seriously love this Greek tragedy stuff. :) Bravo gentlemen!

Also--because it's been asked countless times--my play time clocked in at an estimated 10 hours. I forgot to look at the counter last night to find the exact time.

Damn, my impressions ended up on the bottom of the last page--hope you guys dont mind if I repost?

I'm getting the game for the spectacles and entertainment (story and what not). Also find the violence too extreme, but my solution is to get a younger 360 friend to play it with me. He seems to love GoW, and keeps talking about it. That piqued my interest.

I have a feeling this game is not for people like me, but I don't want to miss out. ^_^

Bah, I hate when they do that. I hate watching credits, and if you step away for a bit, you might miss it. Maybe I'll just tube it later.

It's not like I'm not thankful to the entire team for making such a good game. What difference does it make if I acknowledge every member of the team or not. It's not like I dislike credits to the point that I don't think they should be there, because they should be there to show appreciation for each member.

From what I understand, Greek mythology is VERY gory and brutal. Therefore, why can't it be for historical accuracy?

Yeah, Greek mythology is pretty gory and brutal. I guess you could say the gore is in the spirit of the mythology, but in terms of content the story and characterization are very loose.

Yeah the exaggerated gore is only the bad thing and unnecessary nudes things :???:

I know lots of people still like the artistic beauty of Uncharted2. I think GOW3 graphics, presentation ... everything else is best thing ever. I don't know what it is but there are so many wow moments in GOW games. That is why Kratos rules :devilish:

Just pointing out that these two words shouldn't be referencing the same topic

:)

For reference, I think the gore only serves to distance God of War from every other "T" game out there - and lets the series stand off as an adult title (which GoW has always been). Is it excessive? Sure - but what about the series (and Kratos for that matter isn't) - I guess at this point it's kind of series (and character) defining.

Just my .02 cents

I don't see why mythology and history can't be used to reference the same topic. This mythology was created in the past and the past is history, no? So to be historically accurate with mythology simply means to stay true to the original depiction. :)

I do agree that their story does create a bit of standout for the series.

They can improve the God of war engine:

"Well, I think our studio will use this engine again," he told me today, "and it'll get better. And I think we're probably about 50- or 60-percent at it right now. I think there's a lot more we can do with it.

They will use some blending animation like in Uncharted maybe.

"I think individually our animations are incredible," he said, "and our animators are incredibly talented. But I think we could make our system technically better, in the way we blend animations. And I'm pretty sure that we already have the code to do that, and we just didn't implement it in God of War III because it came in real late."

He also points to other obvious engine improvements, including lighting, seamlessly transitioning from cut-scenes to gameplay, and more.

For lighting, they can maybe add SSAO like uncharted 2 or Crysis or Alan Wake.
