Technological discussion on PS3 security and crack.*

Don't see what the big deal is. The Next set of games will require a firmware update and sony will have to rerelease the usb dongle keys for internal use.

This is both good and bad news for Sony depending on how you look at it.

The good news is that the PS3 is going to see a hardware boost and Sony can go the same route and ban systems annually like MS does with their 360's. And then they can benefit from extra sales. The PS3 is in black, so Sony not making a lost on them now.

The bad news is that software sales will suffer. They'll lose maybe upward to a few hundred thousands. But if Sony continues to market them well they'll still sell well. Games that are already million sellers are going to stay that way. The 360 didn't suffer much.

Devs are going to be pulling for mandatory DLC's and online CD keys. Evidently online digital distribution. Used game market and pirates are going to be killed.

But how many people are going to keep a ps3 with an old firmware around to play pirated games?

The real question is why did Sony allow for unsigned code to be run while in debug/service mode.

Probably for devs to test their code to make sure it works on a regular PS3 without having to jump through all the hoops of getting it signed and and burning it to a BD every time they make a new build.

Dont know but isn't that kinda suicidal?
Have not followed the news surrounding ps 3 manufacturing cost do they still sell it at a lost?

If they do sell at a loss you loose more money because you can't compensate it with software.

They've been profiting for a while now.

There probably won't be a significant sales boost assuming Sony gets an update out before the end of the month and makes sure new units ship with it.

"Of course, everyone can buy what and where he wants, but we want to strongly discourage it PSJailbreak in Germany to buy, because lawyers from Sony Germany BE with an interim order to the vendor website, ARE there any USB sticks, CDs, hard drives and other storage , can provide information WILL take over quantities purchased and sold, as the names and addresses of suppliers and commercial and private customers.
There is also no support from data protection, because the lawyers argue the facts always come out so that it fits.

This is just a friendly warning to the community-minded and German traders.
We have gone the way and already know what we are talking about .... Who would buy the thing that would do in any case abroad, where it is not quite as strict as in Germany and in particular there are the courts not do that with relatively high certainty, the effort to be made (and then seen) make up to foreign individuals."

What's the point of them selling debug and test unit then? Debug for developers(b/c of the extra ram), and test units for tester?

Debug units are obvious for debug and development. I'm not sure about the test unit though but either way you need to check nothing unexpected happens when you go to the consumer edition console.

From demonhades.org:
This mod is basically a RETAIL TO DEBUG convertor, using a JIGCARD from SONY services.
If you look at VHS, it has some DEBUG things.
This JIG CARD(aka USB DONGLE) is used for devs and technicians from sony to launch BOOT INI from DEV_USB0.
Combining some buttons you can change the SYSCON status, who launch as a primary boot this dongle.

BOOTSTRAP is read and the files from dongle are launched and the RAM is making a false REBOOT.
The whole thing its an SYSCON FIRMWARE EMULATOR.
TRM "thinks" we have a debug unit and KERNEL DEBUG is loaded.

This way a DEBUG VSHMAIN (temporarily) allows unsigned code load.
Now you can launch PKGs from USB (that has an explorer to do that)

To launch BDEMU you need a disc to activate MEDIATYPE BD.
When you launch LOADER(from usb) BDDRIVE CHANNEL is closed(they cant share the same channel).
To eliminate LAYER, it needs a CELLFTP to extract decrypted files(no layer) and to convert those to DEBUG MODE.
Executer files can be created with SDK,and generated by the same loader that extract the LAYER, and using PS3GEN to create signed isos(patched).
Same way a 360 works(using a core debug)

The LOADER is executed via APP.
ELIMINATING the initial USB BOOT, its all SONY has to do to kill this mod, because SYSCON is the boss

I'm still baffled why sony used a USB boot, they could have used a network boot with a challenge/response mechanism from the servers.

some are reporting that this happens before syscon kicks in. If true then sony can't do anything to it.

What happens before SYSCON kicks in ? What the heck is SYSCON anyway ? Once it comes up, can't it throw up sh*t if it suspects there is foul play ? ... especially if the JigCard design originated from Sony.

I just hope all the original USB thingamawhizzes had personalized unique bits on them so that this can be traced back to the point of the leak with swiftness.

Personally I have no need to pirate games, but I'd love the ability to install to HDD and not have to have the original disc in the drive.
