What the heck is an Athlon X2 5000B? Buying new PC.

Is the B at the end Brisbane or is it another confusing way to say 5000+?

My current PC motherboard might be dying, and I'm looking for a quick and cheap replacement. I have a couple in mind, and I was hoping someone can tell me if the price is fair for the processor. I don't care about having more power, just a price/performance ratio.

Possibly the board is old so you dont get a replacement for the same socket easily/cheaply.

should be still be possible to replace only parts of the Computer, cheaper and the motherboard is of better quality than the crap they shove into most prebuilds.
eg. Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H + AMD Athlon II X2 250 + some DDR3 Ram. Might need a new PSU aswell.

I'd recommend a DDR2 785G mobo and an Athlon II instead. Cheaper overall still.

DDR2/3 has almost price parity here... less than 5€ difference for 2GB.

Well, I thought the OP had a computer with DDR2 ram already.

D3 should be a better choice as D2 modules are more expensive now.

I have no clue what my RAM is. My CPU is an Athlon X2 4200+. I think we've narrowed it down to motherboard issue. If I replace it, the board is out of stock. If I send it back for repairs, it'll cost me 250 bucks. Since it's an HP, I can't just buy another brand new motherboard + CPU since there's this annoying tattoo thing the prevents the harddrive from working with a different board. I'd erase the harddrive, but I don't have a spare OS, or a spare PC to erase it in the first place. Only choice is a new one.

X2 4200+? Sounds like there's a good possibility that might be socket-754 or socket-939, which means DDR. So a move to new hardware would be significant cost. Then again replacement CPUs for 754/939 aren't exactly cheap either.

So yeah, whole new system is going to be the way to go either way.

That said out of the ones you linked, the Compaq at Newegg would be the best buy. The Dell might be better performance, but it's also 50 USD more. Then again the Dell has a 500 gb HD versus 320gb on the Compaq. Compaq has a bit more memory which is nice.

I wouldn't even consider the one at Tiger Direct.

Its a socket AM2 or socket 939. The socket 754 are single core and the top speed was the 3700+ or 4000+. It do some looking for you and see what I find. If you can, can you post the model number of the HP you have?

No need. I know it's a socket 939. It's very out of date and not worth the trouble.
