Movie Reviews 2.0

Anyone seen Harry Potter yet?

Great movie. I'm always impressed with the Harry Potter movies. It's a type of movie that I really don't care to rate or analyze simply because from the very first scene to the last I'm drawn in by the acting, storytelling, and visuals. It's worth the $80 I spent at the movies to take my son and two of his friends. They loved it quite a bit and can't stop talking about it. Oh to watch young ones for a week. We're actually all going to see it again tomorrow because it was that freaking good!

It was even worse than Ritchie's other recent mockney drivel from first to last and I'm astounded that so many decent actors were willing to appear in this film. After a couple of decent films to start his career (Lock, Stock & Snatch), Ritchie has removed any pretense about his writing and directorial abilities and has also apparently abandoned the idea of any sort of coherent plot or dialogue.

I actually liked Revolver quite a bit - at least an 8/10 for me. But then I just read it was touched by Luc Besson, and I always seem to end up liking anything that's been within 10 feet of Luc Besson. It wasn't brilliant, it's not going to be one of the great classics, but I really liked it.

I'm forbidden to see it without the wife, so until we line up a babysitter for the kids. . . .

Nice. My brother and sister went to see it yesterday and they both quite enjoyed it. I am going to go see it with some friends at the IMAX probably in 3D...I think that gets released on the 29th of this month. I cant wait!

I can't really agree, it was all just a buildup to the heavy handed religious message of the elevator scene with no real plot. The whole replay of "not all was what it seemed" from snatch fell flat in this film too, because the viewer never really believed the two dudes were evil to begin with (whereas Bratt Pitt being just happy go lucky was easy to believe). 5/10.

Religuous message? Two dudes evil to begin with? Have we even seen the same film here?

I saw that 2008 Hulk movie by the way. Not amazing, but definitely better than the first one. Loved the joke about the purple shorts. And the SHIELD thing is interesting - I noticed that in Ironman and was wondering if it leads to something in a sequel form of some sort, but this is even better. What movie has or is going to introduce a SHIELD character next?

Religuous message?
Inner demon, confuse with self, blah blah. Kaballah stuff I guess ... also the movie paraphrases the quote "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist" a couple gazillion fucking times, even with the overtly religious terms left out it's pretty clear where the movie is coming from.

At the end, during the big reveal about who they were they replayed parts of all the scenes where they were "pretending" to be loan sharks from different viewpoints to drive the point home that it was all "staged" (same as in Snatch). The problem being, we always knew it to be staged to begin with ... rather than driving anything home, it just belaboured a point.

Reference to SHIELD in recent Marvel movies is because of two upcoming film projects: there's a Nick Fury/SHIELD movie, and an Avengers movie in the works.

If you're referring to the Zach and Avi characters, they are in Jake's head! They don't exist, they are characters that Jake formed in his head while planning all this in prison. It's not the same as in Snatch, it's more like Fight Club.

That's probably then also why you got confused up to the point where you read religion into it.

Ok, so the 2012 Avengers movie is the one that ties all the SHIELD characters together?

I have no idea, but it's going to be an ensemble thing that probably gets to bring out the lesser known Marvel characters, but it'll be headlined by the ones we know like Iron Man. Nick Fury may make an appearance, as SHIELD initiates the idea of the Avengers, but I think most of the SHIELD stuff will be in the Nick Fury movie.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince- 6/10

Not enough Snape.

Halloween 2- 1981

8/10

My favorite of the series so far. I'm surprised it got such a bad review, though.

Friday the 13th- 2009

5/10

A little lame, but I like the new Jason.

Happy Potter and the Half Blood Prince: 7/10. Coming from the action high of the number 3 and 4, this one really slows the pace down. It's mainly about building up the relationship between the characters. If you go in looking for lots of fighting and action, you'll be disappointed.
Is it me or Harry's magic abilities really got dumbed down in this one? He wasn't a match for anyone. Hopefully the chosen one can get a few stat points for Magic in the final movie.

I too thought it was odd that the chosen one would be such a pussy.

But the movie was strong overall.

BTW I think they split the last book into 2 movies.

Planning what? Getting all his friends and his cousin killed? Having his cousin's kid sit there in the cupboard while it happens? Just so he can get his enemy to shoot himself in the head? That's some piss poor planning there.

There is still the whole speech about his inner demon having been with him forever and these Zach and Avi being new (in the elevator). Then there is the speech Zach and Avi giving him about all these people around him in the casino also having these voices in their head leading them and them believing it to be themselves.

Real or imaginary, Zach and Avi represents morality and reasoning and Mr Gold represents animal instinct.

Harry's real powers lie elsewhere. To me he was never the king of spell power like Dumbledore, snape or Voldemort. In the books, it is made amply clear that his greatest strength is his ability to love.
