Awesome direct feed footage, the final part must be uber epic in terms of presentation and visual. Was a little surprised that it won both The best game of E3 and The Best PS3 game awards too.

I think I'm getting old. I love button mashers, and God of War is pretty much the top button masher, but I have no interest in graphically pulling off a man's head.

I'm sure the people visiting this thread have already seen the GoW3 gameplay video that was shown at the Sony's E3 press conf.? Well that demo/video was cut short of what we actually got to play on the showroom floor. If I recall correctly the video ends right after Kratos rips Helio's head off and uses it to find a secret passage and illuminate the newly revealed passage.

Well we got to play that portion of it, but here is the part I'd like to elaborate on: After navigating said cave with Helios' head--which both illuminates the dark cave and sort of burns the approaching demons, stunning them--Kratos turns a corner revealing a gigantic vertical air shaft. In the game a double-jump (hitting the X button twice) brings out Icarus's wings to assist in farther travel, or to fly in some situations! One of this situations is in the air shaft which allows Kratos to travel at an extremely high speed to different parts of the game world. I asked one of the devs if this means there is going to be a sort of open world aspect to GoW3 and he shook his head saying, "No GoW3 will be just like the previous games--linear".

Back to the gameplay.

So I began to control Kratos as he traveled through the shaft at an insane speed. The gameplay here definitely harkens backed to a simpler, older gameplay style. As you travel down the shaft you will be dodging debris and flying through narrow spaces. It might sound boring in description but it was totally fun! When I asked the dev the purpose of this segment he simply stated they were going for a small break from the raw, visceral gameplay of the previous segment--something with an arcade type of feel. It lasted maybe 30 seconds.

After dying twice I reached the end of the air shaft and was abruptly greeted by a colossal titan who was noticeably very displeased with Kratos as he ROOOOOAAAARED. Stopping at once Kratos swooped down to dodge the Titan’s swatting hand, and then immediately maneuvered to his head to put an end to the Titan and BOOM the demo ended.

It was amazing. It was immense, grandiose and intense in that God of War fashion and I just loved it.

There will definitely be a day when video games become far more real than I want them to be. It'll be like gore porn movies. No interest.

I agree that violence is getting too over the top, to the point that it's just absurd.

I too, turned away when he went for the decapitation. Too much. But I'm still excited to play it :)

Not to sound like a sadist but I absolutely love the gory portion of the game, it's that intense, visceral and glorified kill which defines what GOW is. Of course, they still look highly stylised compared to movies like SAW, so it shouldn't be that bad to the majority I would presume.

I don't like it, that's for sure, although I admit my threshold is kinda low.
But still, I just don't want to do those things to any living creature, even if it's the ugliest troll in the world and the game really doesn't present any options there.

I do like the gore in the God of War game. Kratos cutting open that centaur and having it trample through his own guts was the best kill in the demo IMO. It's so over the top, it's kind of funny.

I wouldn't do that kind of thing to real animal of course. Although I have fed life mise to my snakes, but that's just natures way.

Well, it's not you, it's Kratos. He's the biggest a-hole in the world. "Help me!" "No." *punt*

GoW appeals to the traditional hardcore gamer crowd. They seem to like edgy, destructive themes.

I was playing KZ2 the other day (the new pack). The graphics are convincing and stunning, but I think Guerilla may have short changed themselves a little by keeping the theme "reasonable". Helghan is hostile but it still falls within reasonable and hence, very believable, bounds.

If GG adds more "demonic" elements to the game like GoW (e.g., stormy sky with hellish looking flames ozzing out from the sky, critters and bosses with perverse powers), it'd capture their imagination more. It's just something that crossed my mind once in a while.

I agree with you, the appeal of KZ2 would have been much more engaging if it had more "fantastic" elements, I mean the eye-candy potential is there, it is just up to the designers and artist to do it.

I wish the rendering engine GG created could be used on other games (obviously on ps3) with that approach.

I dont think this has anything to do with the hardcore gamer crowd. Some people like fantasy stuff, others dont. How much you play games have nothing to do with it.

I absolutely hate all sci-fi shooters, as i find all the guns unbelieveable 99% of the time, and normal bullet firing weapons like we got today are way cooler imo.

I hate 99,9% of all games involving shooting monsters. My favorite part of halflife was when we fought the soldiers, the monsters where meh. I didn't like Gears at all, hated the theme and setting, the monsters... I love stuff like CoD4, BF etc.

I was on the fence for KZ2 for a lot of the time, but thankfully the enemies where pretty much humans with red eyes. The weapons where all bullet firing except a few, which for me is a must.
(Im dissapointed about the weapons in KZ2 thought, could have used more weapons, 2-3 of each type, add some more variety, where is the human SMG for example? I want some silenced weapons. I want several assault rifles, not just a helgan and a human one. )
If KZ2 had a fantasy theme i would have passed on it for sure.

Also, you dont need "fantasy" stuff to capture the imagination, you can do the same with realistic themes aswell, just to the same extent. All you need is good\believeable story, and good narration\pace.

For other game types its completely different for me, i love rpg's with medieval themes and magic and stuff and fantasy monsters are okay. I loved GoW.

Anyways,

My point here is that what kind of gamer (casual\hardcore) has nothing to do with you liking fantasy themes or not

Sorry for the bandwidth Mods but I just had to post this wonderful shot of Kratos. I just wish they could give more close ups of this ingame model more often.
