This is a list of games that are now free, as in gratis, to download. If you know of a commercial game that went freeware (or adware) please post here and I'll move the information to this post. Requirements:

  1. The game must be completely free/gratis with no strings attached. Gifts with pre-orders, etc. don't belong here but feel free to create threads about those in the PC games section.
  2. The game must be permanently free. Free weekends or whatever also don't belong here as it would require excessive thread maintenance. Once again, do post about these opportunities in the PC games section if you can.
  3. If the game is ad-supported, please put a notice about it. Certain people prefer to pay if it means no ads. They shouldn't have to download x MBs only to find out it clashes with their principles.

Thanks to Davros for his continuing help with this thread and the PC gaming section in general.

Virtualisation Tools
Some of the games above are old enough that an emulator/virtualised enviroment may be needed. Here are some of the most popular (and free) ones in order from specific to general use.

ScummVM - Allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!

DOSBox - Emulates an Intel x86 PC, complete with sound, graphics, mouse, joystick, modem, etc., necessary for running many old MS-DOS games that simply cannot be run on modern PCs and operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Linux and FreeBSD.

Virtual PC - Lets you create separate virtual machines on your Windows desktop, each of which virtualizes the hardware of a complete physical computer. Use virtual machines to run operating systems such as MS-DOS, Windows, and OS/2. Virtual PC Guy's Blog.

Midway has released The Suffering, allowing you to enjoy the PC version of this horror game developed by Surreal Software for free. Gamers take on the role of Torque, an inmate who must face much more than his own inner demons and the harsh and gritty reality of death row, as he fights to escape the unleashing of the penitentiary's gruesome secrets in a challenge more terrifying than fighting death itself. The Suffering features ultra-mature content and three distinctly different endings depending upon how you choose to survive. As far as I remember, it's really a great game (review) - I recommend you to download! The 1.26GB download can be found on :

Also, I highly recommend that no one touch Blood Omen 2. Google for the cut scenes or read a transcription. The game is just terrible.

Edit: The Suffering is ad supported.

The game is quite decent? (Though surely no triple A title)

I agree with npl regarding blood omen.

"Vampires are super strong, turn into mist and bats and wolves, drink people's blood, are totally immune to bullets and swords, and can get it on with any chick they want because of their hypnotic eyes. Now imagine for a minute the dozens of kickass games you could make featuring any one of those powers.

Crystal Dynamics instead chose to ignore all these powers and make a game that revolves around the ability of vampires to point out how ironic their situation is every two minutes."

Uh...wow. These are all free?! I've been wanting to play the Hitman series in its entirety for quite some time, this way I can play the first two for free, play the 3rd from my copy, and have the 4th by the time I'm done with that.

*facepalm*

I can't believe I forgot Dink Smallwood!

Very good game. Bit too short, though. It's an action/RPG.
