Japan Sales Thread

So 11 million WiiFit and Sports units from 50M total game sales? If total sales is 50 million, Nintendo's 75% would be 37.5 million. If we remove the Fit/Sport aspect, that'd become about 27 million out of 40 million, or about 68%. So still very much weighted against 3rd parties.
True true. And there isn't even a particularly good reason to remove either title, as it's not bundled in Japan AFAIK. All Japanese Wii Sports sales come from people who bought the game separately.

The one that makes the most sense to remove is Wii Play with "only" 2.77M sales as of March. Unfortunately my favourite Japanese sales aggregator has not been maintained since then.

Overall: No real Ps3 hardware bump, but PS3 still outselling Wii almost 2-1.
Not much on software either, Beat Sketch is a Move pack in title, it did help PS3 get ten of the top 20, a first AFAIK, with 4 Move titles (that I can tell), but the absolute Move software numbers are pretty low.

I fully expect Sony's "1 million Move sold in Japan" PR any day now :p

Vanquish 48/11k PS3/360, looks fairly bomba. Boy, not much besides the stalwarts can gain any foothold worldwide. Neither Enslaved, Lords of Shadow, Vanquish etc.

I'm not sure but I think that Beat Sketchers is the one packed in with Move there, and since it's the best selling title and otherwise wouldn't have appeared in this list, I assume it's basically corresponding to the sales of the Move hardware bundle..So that means 22k sold in Japan, which is pretty much nothing - SCEJ haven't done a great job of selling this peripheral, imho. On the other hand, the list is completely filled with PS3 titles, not just Move titles either. If things continue like this and there is nothing on the short term being done by Nintendo or any other challenger on the short term, then I expect 2011 is going to be strongly dominated by the PS3 in Japan. Of course there is also the possibility that the home console business dies off altogether once the 3DS gets launched.

Very notable is that neither Move and its software or Mario have had any influence whatsoever on the hardware sales of Wii and PS3 ... the triend where PS3 now weekly practically doubles Wii sales is still going strong.

What's wrong with Sony selling 1 mil Move controllers for playing existing games ? (assuming they can even achieve that). I think it'd be lower in Japan given that the concept is too similar to Wii, and their marketing is piece-meal and conservative.

I don't think anyone expect Enslaved and Lords of Shadow to hit high note in Japan. Vanquish OTOH may have longer legs based on good word of mouth (IMHO).

Why did 360 sink back to 2K ? For a while they were selling 4-8K a week.

EDIT: I wonder whether Shuhei will get an earful from top management for the poor casual Move title sales. ^_^

I dont think they sold 1 million...I think it was misleading PR.

As I've said, every piece of hard data we've ever gotten has shown Move selling modestly. This just adds to it. The only "data" saying otherwise is a Sony figure. Which I assume is also shipped even though they specifically say sold when other companies seem to say shipped when they mean shipped IIRC.

It strains credibility to say Move is selling so people can play existing games (which games btw? MAG? honest question), but I understand it's your only option to say so, since the Move software isn't selling great.

The games I already had that I can play with Move:

EyePet
Pain (just played the patch for it yesterday)
Hustle Kings
High Velocity Bowling

Games that others could have had already:

Heavy Rain
Resident Evil 5 Gold (bought this after Move, but I hate it)
M.A.G.
Planet MiniGolf
R.U.S.E.
Tiger Woods P.G.A. Tour

I was at mediamarkt again yesterday, and they still didn't have any PS Eye Move bundles. There were a handful of standalone Moves and navcons left, and I even saw a little girl walk there, pick up a separate Move controller and exclaim 'YES!' ...

(A bit lame though that they only have a video playback commercial for Move, not a demo unit, but obviously so far they don't need it if they don't get more stock than they can sell ... )

All of them of course. -_- (Most are -free-)
It's not just about selling based on one game, it's about advancing the experience. Sony hasn't done a good job integrating Move, but that doesn't mean Move has no value. ^_^

A lot of PS3 owners probably shied away from Wii because of the library and tech (SD, GPU, etc.). They may be curious to try Move out since it's not expensive. I think besides Beat Sketcher, Tumble and Flight Controls PSN games are low cost and interesting to check out too.

I don't know if I have any credibility here, but it seems like common sense to me. That said, I am not sure if they can find 1 million Move controller buyers in first week in Japan.

http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/11/04/konami_earnings/

Fueled by strong sales of Winning Eleven, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker and Love Plus, Konami saw sales and earnings gains for the first half of the current fiscal year.

The company announced its first half earnings today. Net revenues were up from 113.9 billion yen in the first half of last year to 115.8 billion yen this year. Operating income leaped from 4.6 billion yen to 8.1 billion yen.

Games specifically mentioned for solid performance were Powerful Pro Baseball 2010, which saw its first ever PlayStation 3 entry over the year, and Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. Love Plus + also saw "social phenomenon level" success just like its predecessor, Konami said. Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution Soccer also performed favorably, with Konami making mention of the Japan-only "Aoki Samurai" unofficial World Cup edition from earlier this year.

The company sold 10.05 million pieces of software over the period, up from last year's 5.89 million. As usual, soccer was the biggest category, with 3.44 million units. Thanks to Peace Walker, Metal Gear games reached 1.47 million units from last year's 360,000 units.

Like last year, Japan was Konami's biggest region, with 4.34 million units. Europe was second with 3.42 million. North America had 2.18 million units.

Last year, Wii was Konami's biggest platform, accounting for 23% of sales. This year, PS3 and PSP surged to, respectively, 29% and 28%. Wii's percentage of software sales fell to 12%. DS also fell from 21% to 14%.

While the PS3 and Wii remain close this year and the race remains exciting to the end with the PS3 having inched out Nintendo, now this single week suddenly brings the PSP right up to the DS as well, and there's a good chance it may still win the year (of course last chance pre-3DS ;) ). And 2 million first week sales for MHP3 ... wow.

Sure, I'm fairly certain if you go to them with something like $20-40 mln, they'll gladly develop one for you.

Nintendo turned it into a Wii exclusive in 2007:
http://www.1up.com/news/capcom-doesn-rule-ps3-monster

Now that there are more PS3 owners, perhaps Capcom can reconsider (for Japan market first).

It's the most bland hack & slash series ever devised.

inefficient mentioned that the combat in Demon's Souls is similar to Monster Hunter, albeit without time limit. I'd like to see it for myself. ^_^

It sucks for Sony the PSP is popular in Japan and nowhere else. Almost would seem to make the PSP2 not a clear decision.

Sony's probably bending over in every direction to get exclusives for the PSP2, with the 3DS just around the corner. Not that it matters that much with Capcom; we saw RE PSP at E3 2 years ago, anyone think that's still coming?

I'd say there's a good chance it's still coming unless PSP2 is imminent and it's been reshuffled to launch on that.

As with the other Japanese third party publishers, PSP software is currently much more profitable for then than DS software.

SB

The weird thing is that although DS seems to be popular pretty much everywhere, when I went to Spain and Italy this summer, I was surprised by so many adults I saw carrying PSP's at the metros. I thought the PSP was popular, just that the DS happened to be more popular with kids

yes they sell a lot of handhelds but if you look at the charts the software doesnt seem to sell well in relation

I'll have to find the post again on GAF but it appears that Kinect has sold-through 40k according to Famitsu, with >10k/week.
